The traditional concept of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is that the heart is squeezed between the sternum and the spine during external cardiac massage to create a pressure gradient that forces blood from the heart to the periphery. Although the heart may actually be squeezed in some persons by this maneuver, a newer view of CPR holds that closed-chest compression produces a generalized rise in intrathoracic pressure that is applied to the pulmonary vascular bed as well as the heart. Thus, the heart does not serve primarily as a pump during external cardiac massage but instead acts as a

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the effect of resuscitation guideline terminology on pediatric cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) performance.
METHODS: This was a prospective randomised crossover simulation trial. A total of 32 medical doctors conducted 2-min single-rescuer CPR using the one-handed chest compression technique (OHCC) or two-handed chest compression technique (THCC) on a pediatric manikin. The participants conducted chest compressions according to the chest compression depth (CCD) target of '5 cm (Test 1)' or 'at least one third of the anterior-posterior dimension o

Cardiac arrest (CA) has a serious impact on human health. Quality assessment of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) combined with feedback on physiological parameters is important in improving patients' survival and neurological prognosis after CA. Little is known how the cardiopulmonary-cerebral relationship changes during CPR. This study aimed to investigate the dynamic changes of cardiopulmonary-cerebral causality during CPR. Based on animal experiments, electrocardiography, end-tidal carbon dioxide and electroencephalogram were collected during CPR and were divided into Baseline, CA, CPR a

We retrospectively evaluated the outcome from cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in 149 children of all age groups. Only 7 children experienced ventricular fibrillation. 47 children (31.5%) died immediately. Further 47 children died within 24 hours of their arrest, 24 (16.1%) survived longer than 24 hours after CPR but not until discharge. Only 31 children (20.8%) survived to discharge, 5 with severe neurologic sequelae, attributable to the arrest or resuscitation efforts. Cardiopulmonary arrests in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit carried the worst prognosis. Better results were obtained ou

A case of bilateral extensive subcutaneous emphysema secondary to external cardiac massage is reported. This is a rare complication. It occurs with a pneumothorax after resuscitation maneuvers. The diagnosis is based on a bundle of anamnestic, clinical and radiological arguments. This case demonstrates the importance of performing a simple prehospital thoracostomy on the finger without chest tube placement and demonstrates the need for systematic investigation of possible complications in any patient who has undergone external cardiac massage.

That endogenous vasopressin levels in successfully resuscitated human patients were significantly higher than in patients who died pointed to the possible benefit of administering vasopressin during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Several CPR studies in pigs showed that vasopressin improved blood flow to vital organs, cerebral oxygen delivery, resuscitability and neurological outcome when compared with epinephrine. In a small clinical study, vasopressin significantly improved short-term survival when compared with epinephrine indicating its potential as an alternative pressor to epinephri

The abrupt transition from intrauterine to extrauterine life represents a series of profound physiologic changes. This process puts the baby at risk for asphyxia. At birth, the newborn is, therefore, more frequently in need of resuscitation than at any other age. This article reviews the rationale for the sequence and process of neonatal resuscitation, emphasizing recent changes in recommendations.

The 2025 Korean Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation provide updated, evidence-based recommendations to optimize the transition from intrauterine to extrauterine life. While approximately 85% of term newborns initiate spontaneous breathing independently, timely intervention is critical for those requiring assistance. Key updates in the 2025 guidelines emphasize umbilical cord management, recommending deferred cord clamping for at least 60 seconds in vigorous term and preterm infants (<37 weeks). When deferred cord clamping cannot be performed, intact umbilical cord milking may be reaso

In children, severe emergencies and cardiorespiratory arrests in particular are relatively rare but time-critical events. As compared to adults, hypoxic arrests caused by respiratory disorders that may subsequently result in pulseless electrical activity or asystole are more prevalent. The current Paediatric Life Support (PLS) Guidelines 2015 of the European Resuscitation Council (ERC) acknowledge both limited scientific evidence and aspects of practicability. They also take into account the rather limitedpaediatric routine that most providers have as well as national and local infrastructural

OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy of automated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (A-CPR) and manual cardiopulmonary resuscitation (M-CPR) in the rescue of cardiac and respiratory arrest.
METHODS: A retrospective, single-center observational study was conducted to identify 106 patients by reviewing medical records of 269 patients with cardiac and respiratory arrest treated in The Second Hospital of Hebei Medical University, Shandong Provincial Third Hospital (Jinan, China) from February 2019 to February 2021. Patients were divided into A-CPR group (n = 55) and M-CPR group (n = 51) based on the re

Breath-holding spells are common in childhood and can be associated with bradycardia and pulselessness. This report details severe breath-holding spells complicating postoperative management after atrial septal defect closure. The patient required cardiopulmonary resuscitation despite the use of a temporary pacemaker to prevent bradycardia. After multiple episodes of chest compressions, the decision was made to not intervene immediately to pulselessness and the patient was able to recover without further intervention.

A study was undertaken to determine the pattern of arterial blood gas (ABG) concentration in the canine model undergoing prolonged cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) from fibrillatory arrest, and to determine the importance of acid base abnormalities in predicting resuscitation. Ventricular fibrillation was induced electrically in 12 dogs. CPR was begun at 3 minutes and continued for 27 minutes, at which time the dogs were defibrillated. ABG samples were taken at 0, 8, 18, and 28 minutes of ventricular fibrillation. Seven of the 12 dogs were resuscitated successfully. There was no difference

This review highlights extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR), the rapid deployment of veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation as salvage therapy for refractory cardiac arrest. The goal is to bridge patients to recovery or advanced therapies, with outcomes dependent on patient selection (witnessed arrest, shockable rhythm, younger age, and limited comorbidities) and minimizing "low flow" time. ECPR is now applied across intraprocedural, critical care, and out-of-hospital settings. Initiation after failed early resuscitation requires precise choreography, with survival hi

BACKGROUND: Epinephrine (adrenaline) is currently the only cardiac agent recommended during neonatal resuscitation. The inability to predict which newborns are at risk of requiring resuscitative efforts at birth has prevented the collection of large, high-quality human data.
SUMMARY: Information on the optimal dosage and route of epinephrine administration is extrapolated from neonatal animal studies and human adult and pediatric studies. Adult resuscitation guidelines have previously recommended vasopressin use; however, neonatal studies needed to create guidelines are lacking. A review of t

In July 2007, the Neonatal Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (NCPR) program in Japan was launched to ensure that all staff involved in perinatal and neonatal medicine can learn and practice NCPR based on the Consensus on Science with Treatment Recommendations developed by the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation. In 1978 in North America, a working group on pediatric resuscitation was formed by the American Heart Association Emergency Cardiac Care Committee and concluded that the resuscitation of newborns required a different strategy than the resuscitation of adults. The original firs
