METHODS: The study was conducted in 4,290 medical students from 10 countries in Latin America. The "Attribution Scale of General Achievement Motivation" was used to evaluate their general performance. The "Medical motivati

Aging knowledge, geriatric care attitudes, and career choice motivation among nursing students: A latent profile analysis and mediation analysis.

BACKGROUND: The global aging population has intensified the demand for geriatric care, yet a critical shortage of professionals persists, partly due to nursing students' low motivation to pursue careers in this field. Knowledge of aging and attitudes towards geriatric care are key antecedents to career choice motivation, but their complex interrelationships and the heterogeneity in attitudes remain underexplored. AIM: To identify latent profiles of geriatric care attitudes, examine differences in knowledge of aging and career choice motivation across profiles, and investigate knowledge of agi

Career choices for emergency medicine: national surveys of graduates of 1993-2009 from all UK medical schools.

BACKGROUND: In the UK, recruitment of adequate numbers of doctors to emergency medicine (EM) has been problematic. With this as background, we analysed data about career choice for, and progression in, EM in a large multi-purpose study of doctors' careers. METHODS: Questionnaire surveys of medical graduates of 1993, 1996, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2005, 2008 and 2009 from all UK medical schools. RESULTS: EM was specified as a first choice of career by 4.2% of graduates in postgraduate year 1, 4.8% in year 3, and 3.8% in year 5. Graduates who chose EM were much less likely to be certain about their c

Factors Associated With Junior Residents' Choice of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Specialty: A Longitudinal Survey Based on 2025 Career Decisions.

AIM: In Japan, the chronic shortage of obstetric-gynecologists exists in reality. To tackle the issue, we aim to identify the factors that promote or discourage junior residents' choice of the obstetrics-gynecology (Ob/Gyn) specialty. METHODS: We conducted a questionnaire survey of junior residents at the Summer School (SS) in 2023 and the Plus One Project 2 (POP2) in 2024 (preparatory educational events). One hundred and twenty-two and 179 junior residents responded, respectively. In 2025, they decided whether to specialize in Ob/Gyn. We collected anonymized data on their decisions. Using th

Making nursing a better place: a discrete choice experiment to elicit the job preferences of early-career nurses in England.

BACKGROUND: In England, disproportionate numbers of registered nurses leave the National Health Service (NHS) early in their careers. Retaining early-career nurses could ease supply challenges. Most evidence-largely from outside the UK-indicates that retention factors among early-career nurses are within their employers' control. Research is needed to understand the job preferences of early-career NHS nurses to inform and develop tailored retention policies. OBJECTIVES: To identify the job preferences of early-career NHS nurses and estimate the potential trade-offs between these job character

Impact of sexual and gender minority (SGM) identity on specialty choice, career trajectory and the physician workforce: a systematic review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals remain underrepresented across several medical specialties and leadership positions. Training environments in medical school and residency may shape specialty choice and career development for SGM individuals through experiences of discrimination and pressures related to identity disclosure. The literature remains fragmented across stages of training and specialties, limiting understanding of how these factors collectively shape physician workforce composition. We aim to investigate and synthesise the existing literature examining the

Personal and Contextual Influences on African Medical Students' Career Choices in Primary Care: A Cross-Sectional Mixed-Methods Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The choice of specialty by medical students is pivotal for their careers and the health care system. The shortage of trained medical providers makes this choice particularly salient in Africa. Understanding the motivations and preferences of African medical students can inform interventions to improve the distribution and retention of doctors across specialties and regions. This study aims to explore the factors influencing specialty selection among medical students across Africa using a cross-sectional, mixed-methods approach. METHODS: A survey conducted from June

Impact of the new Japanese medical specialty system on residents' career choices in general medicine: a nationwide cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: General medicine (GM) was formally recognized as a specialty in Japan in 2018 to address the need for primary care. Understanding factors influencing GM career choices is critical for recruitment. However, the reform's impact on career decision-making remains unclear. This study examined factors influencing GM career choices following the introduction of the new specialty certification and identified challenges in this field. METHODS: A secondary analysis of national survey data from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare's questionnaire (2018-2020) for clinical training gradu

Personality traits and career choices among physicians in Finland: employment sector, clinical patient contact, specialty and change of specialty.

BACKGROUND: Personality influences an individual's adaptation to a specific job or organization. Little is known about personality trait differences between medical career and specialty choices after graduating from medical school when actually practicing different medical specialties. Moreover, whether personality traits contribute to important career choices such as choosing to work in the private or public sector or with clinical patient contact, as well as change of specialty, have remained largely unexplored. In a nationally representative sample of Finnish physicians (N = 2837) we examin

Factors associated with medical students' career choice in different specialties: a multiple cross-sectional questionnaire study at a German medical school.

METHODS: We conducted multiple cross-sectional surveys of students; a 159-item online questionnaire was designed and students from three different stages of the six-year medical degree course (outset, clinical phase, and on graduation) were invited to complete the survey. Factors that influence a career choice in primary care among medical students from high-, middle-, and low-income countries: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: To determine which factors influence a medical student's decision to choose a career in primary care; and to establish if these factors are similar or different among students in high-, middle- and low-income countries. METHODS: An extensive search was done of PubMed, Google Scholar, and Virtual Library of Health for articles on primary care careers published in 2003-2013 in English, Spanish, and/or Portuguese. Initially, 600 records were identified; 74 full-text articles were assessed for eligibility and 55 were selected (42 from high-income countries; 13 from middle- and low-inco

Career Choice Motivation and Job Satisfaction Among Chinese Geriatric Social Workers: The Serial Mediation Model of Job Autonomy and Collective Psychological Ownership.

Using data from the China Social Work Longitudinal Study (N = 2,254), this study examined associations between career choice motivation and job satisfaction among Chinese geriatric social workers. Internal motivation was positively associated with job satisfaction, whereas external motivation was negatively associated with it. Job autonomy and collective psychological ownership independently mediated these associations and also formed a serial mediation pathway. These findings extend understanding of geriatric social workers' job satisfaction in a non-Western context and suggest that care orga
