Teaching Caregivers to Implement the Caregivers Optimizing Achievement of Children With Hearing Loss (COACH) Intervention.

PURPOSE: This study examined the effectiveness of Caregivers Optimizing Achievement of Children With Hearing Loss (COACH), an intervention in which parents were taught naturalistic interaction strategies that addressed the unique linguistic input needs of their young children with hearing loss. METHOD: A single-subject multiple-baseline across-behaviors design was used with four caregiver-child dyads to determine the effects of COACH training on caregivers' use of the COACH language facilitation strategies and on their children's language abilities. RESULTS: A functional relation was demonst

We Are Caregivers: Social Identity Is Associated with Lower Perceived Stress among Rural Informal Caregivers.

ABSTRACTInformal caregivers often experience high stress levels with little support, especially in rural settings. With a mixed-methods approach, this research explored experiences of rural informal caregivers, including how social identification as a caregiver, social interactions, and formal and informal coping support related to perceived stress. Major focus group themes (n = 8) included lacking available services, balancing challenges, unmet practical needs, and strong community identity. Survey data (n = 22) revealed that perceived coping support (e.g., having someone to turn to), social

Caregivers in a Haystack? Informatics-Driven Clinical Trial Enrollment of Dementia Caregivers at Medical Visits.

BACKGROUND: Caregiving status is not routinely documented during clinical care, rendering caregivers difficult to identify for research and supportive interventions. We describe two informatics-based strategies for identifying dementia caregivers at their own or their care recipient's point of care (POC). METHODS: The CommunityRx-Dementia trial was conducted at a U.S. urban academic medical center serving a predominantly Black population. Eligible participants were caregivers of a patient with dementia recruited mainly by: (1) fee-based queries of the clinical research data warehouse (CRDW) t

Health of Bi+ Dementia Caregivers: Moderation Effects of Minority and Caregiving Stress.

Despite comprising the largest segment of the sexual minority population and experiencing unique stressors and health disparities, bi+ dementia caregivers remain underrepresented in health and caregiving research. This secondary analysis of cross-sectional survey data from LGBTQ+ dementia caregivers (bi+, n = 125; gay[g]/lesbian[l], n = 161) examined whether associations between minority and caregiving stressors and global health differed by caregiver group. Bi+ caregivers reported significantly higher minority stress and lower family quality of life but better health than g/l caregivers. Mode

Promoting Adaptation to Caregiving Challenges: A Qualitative Study of Dementia Caregiving Specialists.

Limited evidence describes how practicing dementia caregiving specialists (DCS) facilitate caregiver mastery of dementia-related challenges. This qualitative study was designed to characterize perceptions of a national sample of DCS about the caregiver support they provide and strategies they use to promote caregivers' adaptation to dementia caregiving challenges. Qualitative analysis of interviews with 27 DCS from 11 states indicates the scope of DCS practice ranged from one-to-one and group-based consultation to community education and advocacy. DCS reported providing care at inflection poin

Neuropsychiatric Symptom Severity, Caregiver Distress, and Caregiver Burden in Dementia Outpatients.

BACKGROUND: Neuropsychiatric symptoms are major contributors to caregiver burden in older adults with cognitive disorders. The Neuropsychiatric Inventory Questionnaire (NPI-Q) measures both symptom severity and caregiver distress, but whether caregiver distress conveys information beyond symptom severity remains unclear. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of consecutive first-visit patients at a dementia outpatient clinic in Japan between April 2020 and October 2025. Caregiver burden was assessed with the 22-item Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI-22). Excess distress was defined as the r

Complex atypical caregiving: navigating the margins of unique caregiver roles and burdens.

The incidence and prevalence of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRDs) significantly impact care recipients, caregivers, and broader society. Most caregivers of ADRD care recipients are family members. These informal caregivers often experience health, emotional, and practical difficulties in their roles as informal caregivers of loved ones with ADRDs. Most family caregivers are adult children or spouses of ADRD care recipients. Complex atypical caregiver roles may include role reversal, unique caregiving dynamics, or multiple roles. For example, these roles may include a minor chil

The presence of a secondary caregiver differentiates primary cancer caregiver well-being.

BackgroundInformal caregivers play a fundamental role in the care of hematological cancer patients, but less is known about how secondary caregivers are involved. We assessed the presence or absence of a secondary caregiver, the types of caregiving activities performed by primary and secondary caregivers, and examined whether the presence of a secondary caregiver was associated with primary caregiver characteristics and well-being over time.MethodsA case series of hematological cancer patient-caregiver dyads (n = 171) were recruited from oncology clinics in Virginia and Pennsylvania and follow

Caregiving demands and caregivers' psychological outcomes: the mediating role of perceived injustice.

OBJECTIVES: This study hypothesized that higher caregiving demands are related to higher perceived injustice. Furthermore, this study investigated the mediating role of perceived injustice in the link between caregiving demands and caregivers' psychological well-being. DESIGN: A cross-sectional design. SETTING: The Pain Centre of the university medical centre. SUBJECTS: Participants were 184 family caregivers of patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain. MAIN MEASURES: Participants completed questionnaires that assessed caregiving demands (i.e. The Dutch Objective Burden Inventory), perce

Patient perceptions of caregiver criticism in psychosis: links with patient and caregiver functioning.

Expressed emotion (EE) has been described as a measure of caregivers' appraisals of the quality of their relationship with patients. However, far less is known about how the perception of their caregivers by patients with psychosis is shaped by caregivers' EE, and nothing about the clinical correlates of perceived EE. The current study examines the association of patient ratings of carer criticism with patient and carer characteristics. Patient ratings of carer criticism were also compared with the ratings of the carer derived from the Camberwell Family Interview. Sixty-seven patient-carer dya

Prevalence and impact of caregiving: a detailed comparison between dementia and nondementia caregivers.

Analyzing data from more than 1,500 family caregivers from the 1996 National Caregiver Survey, this study documents the ways in which dementia care is different from other types of family caregiving. Not only do dementia caregivers spend significantly more hours per week providing care than nondementia caregivers, they also report greater impacts in terms of employment complications, caregiver strain, mental and physical health problems, time for leisure and other family members, and family conflict. Differential impacts remain even after controlling for intensity of caregiving involvement and

Effects of caregiving experience on expectations of becoming an Alzheimer's disease caregiver in the future.

OBJECTIVES: Research often focuses on persons who are or have been caregivers to a person with dementia. Little is known about stigma reactions in persons who expect to care for a person with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Understanding these beliefs may help guide clinical discussions with family members of persons with AD, particularly those diagnosed in the early stages. METHODS: A sample of 3,527 adults was randomized to read a vignette describing a fictional person with either a positive or a negative AD biomarker test result. Bivariate and multivariable analyses examined associations between

Strategies to Reduce Caregiver Burden among Family Caregivers of Patients on Hemodialysis.

Family caregivers of patients on hemodialysis (HD) experience significant burden that can impact their health and quality of life. Identifying effective strategies to reduce this burden is essential for improving outcomes for both patients and caregivers. This article highlights evidence-based strategies for addressing caregiver burden among family caregivers of patients receiving HD. A literature review was performed using EBSCOhost, ProQuest, and PubMed databases. Twenty-two related articles were identified, of which 12 met inclusion criteria. Five effective strategies were identified to red

Development of a Scale for Assessing Caregiving Competence in Family Caregivers of Persons with Dementia.

INTRODUCTION: The aging of family caregivers and the growing number of older adults living alone have intensified concerns about dementia care in Japan. Early and effective assessment of caregiving competence is essential for providing timely support. This study aimed to develop the Caregiving Competence Scale for Dementia (CCSD) for primary family caregivers. METHODS: A two-phase scale development study was conducted. In phase 1, potential items were generated through a literature review and refined with feedback from experienced family caregivers. In phase 2, a questionnaire survey assessed
