Saturated anacardic acid preserves root dentin collagen under cariogenic challenge.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate changes in the structure and organization of root dentin collagen in bovine incisors pre-treated with an anacardic acid derivative (LDT11) following an in vitro cariogenic challenge, thereby contributing to understanding of dentin matrix biology and biomodification strategies for root caries management. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Bovine root dentin specimens were demineralized and pre-treated with LDT11 (100 µg/mL) or distilled water (control). Samples were then subjected to a cariogenic challenge for 7 days. Histological sections were stained with Picrosirius and

Dental caries: an infectious and transmissible disease where have we been and where are we going?

Dental caries is often referred to as an infectious disease, which means different things to different people. Pediatric dentists may be tempted to liken caries to other childhood diseases they encounter yet treat caries from mostly a mechanical or surgical approach. On the other end of the spectrum are clinicians who view the oral cavity as a site teaming with bacteria and think that reducing the overall microbial mass using antimicrobial agents will somehow affect this infectious disease. Here, we argue for another view, that is, to combine the most effective portion of each therapy to yield

High Amount of Organic Matter during Caries Formation Reduces Remineralization and Resin Infiltration of Enamel Caries.

The amount of organic material in the cariogenic environment correlates with the amount of organic material incorporated in carious enamel. The incorporated organic material may be expected to reduce the pore volumes available for remineralization and resin infiltration, but these expected outcomes have not yet been quantified. We tested the effect of the amount of organic content in the cariogenic agent on remineralization and the resin-occluded pore volume in artificial subsurface enamel caries. An acid gel (organic-rich; G1) and an aqueous solution (organic-poor; G2) were used to induce sub

The Inhibitory Effect of Agastache rugosa Essential Oil on the Dental Biofilm.

This study aimed to identify the inhibitory effect of Agastache rugosa essential oil (AREO) on the cariogenic properties of Streptococcus mutans, which causes dental caries and dental plaque formation. After extracting the AREO, their effects on the growth and acid production of S. mutans were examined. Furthermore, S. mutans biofilm formation was observed on the resin teeth surface. The effect on the expression of biofilm-related genes of S. mutans was measured using real-time PCR. AREO components were analyzed using gas chromatography (GC) and GC-mass spectrometry (MS). The growth and acid p

Differential susceptibility of cariogenic and commensal oral Streptococcus species to chemically distinct disinfectants including ozone water in vitro.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus mutans is the primary causative agent of dental caries. Many Streptococcus species present in the oral cavity are thought to increase the risk of infective endocarditis and pneumonia. Conversely, S. sanguinis, S. oralis, S. salivarius, S. gordonii, and S. mitis are streptococci frequently isolated from the oral cavity and are thought to suppress the colonisation of cariogenic bacteria. Recently, mouthwashes have gained attention as a preventive strategy against dental caries. Therefore, we conducted an experiment to verify the caries prevention effect of various disin

Sweet Orange Juice Processing By-Product Extracts: A Caries Management Alternative to Chlorhexidine.

Dental caries is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases globally in both children and adults. This study investigated the potential of industrial sweet orange waste extracts (ISOWE) as a substitute for chlorhexidine (CHX) in managing dental caries. First, the cytotoxicity of ISOWE (40, 80, 120 mg/mL) and CHX (0.1 and 0.2%) on buccal epithelial cells was determined. ISOWE exhibited no overall toxicity, whereas CHX strongly affected cell viability. The combination of ISOWE and CHX significantly enhanced cell proliferation compared to CHX alone. Next, the antimicrobial efficacy of ISOWE, CHX,

Inhibitory effect of plant flavonoid cyanidin on oral microbial biofilm.

UNLABELLED: As primary colonizers of the tooth surface, oral streptococci play a crucial role in dental caries development. Numerous natural compounds, including flavonoids, are emerging as promising agents for inhibiting dental biofilm formation without compromising bacterial viability, underscoring their potential in non-bactericidal antibiofilm strategies. This study investigated the effects and mechanism of action of the unmodified plant flavonoid cyanidin on the growth and sucrose-dependent biofilm formation of oral streptococci, with a particular focus on the cariogenic pathogen Streptoc

A Review of the Role of Probiotic Supplementation in Dental Caries.

Dental diseases are among the common health issues experienced around the world. Dental caries is one of the most predominant oral diseases worldwide. Major factors associated with caries development include poor oral hygiene, the content of specific carbohydrates in the diet, dental biofilm formation, the cariogenic microbial load, reduction in salivary flow, insufficient fluoride exposure, gingival recession, genetic factors, and lack of personal attention to one's dental health. Several preventive measures have been implemented to reduce the risk of the development of caries. Probiotics are

Dental management of the patient with major depression.

Major depression is a psychiatric disorder in which mood, thought content, and behavioral patterns are impaired for long periods of time. It is a common disorder, with an increasing prevalence among young adults. It may be associated with a disinterest in performing appropriate preventive oral hygiene techniques, a cariogenic diet, diminished salivary flow, rampant dental decay, advanced periodontal disease, and oral dysesthesias. Many medications used to treat the disease magnify the xerostomia and increase the incidence of dental disease. Appropriate dental management necessitates a vigorous

Sulforaphane as a promising anti-caries agents: inhibitory effects on Streptococcus mutans and caries control in a rat model.

Dental caries has been one of the most prevalent diseases globally over the last few decades, threatening human oral and general health. The most critical aspect in caries control is to inhibit the dominant cariogenic bacteria Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans). Sulforaphane (SFN), a compound found in a wide range of cruciferous plants, has demonstrated bacteriostatic activities against various pathogenic bacteria. The objective of the present study was to investigate the effects of SFN on S. mutans though both in vitro and in vivo experiment. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) against S

On-demand caries prevention: on-site generated slightly acidic electrolyzed water as a potent and biocompatible anti- Streptococcus mutans agent.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries remains a prevalent public health disorder dominated by Streptococcus mutans. Novel biocompatible antibacterial agents are urgently required for caries control. Slightly acidic electrolyzed water (SAEW), rich in endogenous hypochlorous acid, boasts broad bactericidal effects and minimal cellular toxicity, yet rapid degradation during storage limits its reproducibility. Thus, this study adopted freshly prepared SAEW to systematically assess its anti-cariogenic performance for translational reference. METHODS: In vitro, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and mi

Remineralization agents - new and effective or just marketing hype?

This is a review of the need for better remineralization and of the status of calcium-based remineralizing agents for use in anti-caries toothpastes. Use of fluoride toothpastes has markedly reduced caries. However, the decline may be over or in reverse. There is a limit to what fluoride alone can do; complementary agents are needed. Using plaque as a reservoir for calcium-based agents holds promise. Plaque fluid is already supersaturated with respect to relevant calcium phosphates at neutral pH; extra calcium may lead to surface-blocking and sub-optimal lesion consolidation. However, at cario

Teeth for the future.

The main dietary influences on teeth are, with the exception of ingested fluoride, local rather than systemic. The frequent use of carbohydrates which can be rapidly fermented by dental plaque micro-organisms is the major factor in dental decay. Sweetened and/or highly acidic soft drinks or medicines sweetened with sugars may damage the teeth. Similarly infant's comforters also have their dangers if they provide prolonged exposure of the teeth to cariogenic conditions. Although dental caries is primarily a disease of children many adults still develop new lesions and adults who have lost gingi
