Long term remineralizing effect of casein phosphopeptide amorphous calcium phosphate in white spot lesions: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

BACKGROUND: White spot lesions (WSLs) appear as white, opaque areas on the teeth and are caused by a demineralization of the enamel. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine whether casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) has beneficial effects on WSLs and provides remineralizing benefits that are superior to those of placebo or no treatment. METHODS: Following a thorough analysis of the literature across major online sources, 103 papers - 54 of which underwent in-depth evaluation - were found. We used inclusion and exclusion cri

Evidence-based approaches and considerations for nonrestorative treatments within modern caries management: Integrating science into practice.

BACKGROUND: A high level of scientific evidence supports several nonrestorative strategies for the control of caries, with the goal of reducing progression of mineral loss and arresting existing lesions. The authors provide an overview of evidence for nonrestorative caries control and considerations in the decision making for selecting nonrestorative options. TYPES OF STUDIES REVIEWED: The authors discuss findings from existing reviews, systematic reviews, and evidence-based guidelines (particularly from the American Dental Association) describing the effectiveness of nonrestorative strategie

White Spots: Prevention in Orthodontics-Systematic Review of the Literature.

Early-stage dental demineralization, called white spots (WS), get their name from the characteristic colour that enamel takes on due to the acid attack of salivary cariogenic bacteria. They are often associated with fixed orthodontic therapy (FOT) and, if left untreated, evolve into caries with repercussions on oral health and dental aesthetics. This review aims to identify the most effective prophylaxis strategies to prevent WS during FOT. The search for the reviewed studies was conducted on the Pubmed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases, selecting English-only articles published in the 5 y

Reinforced dentin remineralization via a novel dual-affinity peptide.

OBJECTIVES: In light of the constantly flowing saliva, anti-caries remineralization agents are inclined to be taken away. Owing to their limited residence time, the remineralization effect is not as desirable as expected. Hence, our study aimed to synthesize a novel peptide (DGP) with high affinity to both collagen fibrils and hydroxyapatite, and investigated its dentin remineralization efficacy in vitro and anti-caries capability in vivo. METHODS: DGP was synthesized through Fmoc solid-phase reaction. The binding ability and interaction mechanism of DGP to demineralized dentin were investiga

The use of hydroxyapatite toothpaste to prevent dental caries.

Dissolution of hydroxyapatite from the tooth structure at low pH can lead to the irreversible destruction of enamel and dentin, which if left untreated can result in pain and tooth loss. Hydroxyapatite toothpastes contain hydroxyapatite particles in micro- or nanocrystalline form that have been shown to deposit and restore demineralized enamel surfaces. As such, they are currently being explored as a fluoride-free anti-caries agent. This narrative review article aims to summarize the recent findings of the research investigating the remineralization potential of HAP toothpaste in vitro, in sit

Remineralization agents - new and effective or just marketing hype?

This is a review of the need for better remineralization and of the status of calcium-based remineralizing agents for use in anti-caries toothpastes. Use of fluoride toothpastes has markedly reduced caries. However, the decline may be over or in reverse. There is a limit to what fluoride alone can do; complementary agents are needed. Using plaque as a reservoir for calcium-based agents holds promise. Plaque fluid is already supersaturated with respect to relevant calcium phosphates at neutral pH; extra calcium may lead to surface-blocking and sub-optimal lesion consolidation. However, at cario

Physiology and toxicity of fluoride.

Fluoride has been described as an essential element needed for normal development and growth of animals and extremely useful for human beings. Fluoride is abundant in the environment and the main source of fluoride to humans is drinking water. It has been proved to be beneficial in recommended doses, and at the same time its toxicity at higher levels has also been well established. Fluoride gets accumulated in hard tissues of the body and has been know to play an important role in mineralization of bone and teeth. At high levels it has been known to cause dental and skeletal fluorosis. There a

The effect of different glass ionomer cements and surface coating applications on fluoride release and microhardness values.

BACKGROUND: The glass-ionomer cements have many advantages such as the ability to form chemical bonding at the tooth-restoration interface, release and recharge of fluoride, low cytotoxicity and high biocompatibility. But their low mechanical properties and susceptibility to moisture contamination during hardening limit their usage the regions exposed to high stress. The surface coatings used to protect the physical and mechanical properties of the material reduce fluoride release. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the effects of different glass-ionomer cements and surface coatings on flu

Preventive management of carious lesions: from non-invasive to micro-invasive operative interventions.

Understanding that dental carious lesions occur as a result of the action of micro-organisms in the dental plaque biofilm, where demineralisation on the tooth surface is the first sign of the disease, such incipient lesions can be treated using preventive, non-operative and minimally invasive operative dentistry. If the caries process is left unmanaged, the lesions progress towards cavitation, leading to more invasive treatments. This article discusses the principles of preventive, non-invasive and micro-invasive treatments of early carious lesions, outlining the clinical situations where thes

Concentration and Stability of Fluoride Chemically Available in Charcoal-Containing Toothpastes.

INTRODUCTION: Among the wide variety of commercially oral hygiene products, activated charcoal-based toothpastes have irrupted the market, claiming multiple benefits. Although most are fluoride free, others incorporate fluoride into their formulations, yet the chemical availability and stability of fluoride in these products remain unclear. Our study aimed to assess the chemical availability and stability of fluoride in commercially fluoridated toothpastes formulated with activated charcoal. METHODS: We purchased duplicate samples with different lot numbers of different brands containing fluo

[Use of fluorides for caries prevention].

For a few decades, a decrease in the caries burden in all age groups has been observed in Germany. The regular use of fluoride preparations is described as the main reason for the caries decline. It is well established that topical fluoride application directly to the tooth surfaces in the oral cavity, in particular fluoride-containing toothpastes and fluoride varnishes, is responsible for the decline. Several mechanisms of action, such as the formation of a calcium fluoride layer, remineralization, and the effects on bacterial plaque, were determined to be responsible for the overall clinical

Pyrophosphates in toothpaste: a retrospective and reappraisal.

During the last 50 years, an increasing number of toothpastes have been marketed that include pyrophosphates as anti-tartar (calculus) agents. Pyrophosphates are chelating agents with low toxicity and a broad range of applications, such as food additives and in industrial applications. Like other chelating agents, the prime function is to combine with metal elements and, in toothpastes, to inhibit calcium phosphate deposits in the form of dental calculus. It is well established that pyrophosphates inhibit crystal growth of hydroxyapatite in bones and teeth, and theoretically may negatively aff

New Preventive Approaches Part I: Functional Peptides and Other Therapies to Prevent Tooth Demineralization.

The limited effect of fluoride on root caries has prompted the study of new preventive therapies, which involve recently developed functional peptides, lasers, phosphate-based technologies, among several other approaches. Most of the specific peptides currently investigated have been developed based on the available information related to the protective action of salivary proteins, including statherin-derived peptides. Other peptides include 8DSS, self-assembling peptide P11-4, antimicrobial peptides, and casein phosphopeptides combined with amorphous calcium phosphate. These were shown to inc

Focus on fluorides: update on the use of fluoride for the prevention of dental caries.

UNLABELLED: Improving the efficacy of fluoride therapies reduces dental caries and lowers fluoride exposure. BACKGROUND: Fluoride is delivered to the teeth systemically or topically to aid in the prevention of dental caries. Systemic fluoride from ingested sources is in blood serum and can be deposited only in teeth that are forming in children. Topical fluoride is from sources such as community water, processed foods, beverages, toothpastes, mouthrinses, gels, foams, and varnishes. The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Dental Association (ADA) ha
