Meckel syndrome is a lethal autosomal recessive disorder characterized by the triad of cystic renal dysplasia, occipital encephalocele, or other anomaly of the central nervous system and post-axial polydactyly. Malformation of the ductal plate is an integral component of Meckel syndrome. Ductal plate malformations include congenital hepatic fibrosis, biliary hamartoma, autosomal dominant polycystic liver disease, Caroli disease, and choledochal cyst. The occurrence of cystic hepatic disease, Caroli disease, and choledochal cyst have not been highlighted. This is a report of a 26-week fetus wit

Three infants with nonobstructive bile duct dilatation (Caroli disease) are described. The bile duct pathology was associated with autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease in two patients and with severe destruction of the renal parenchyma of unknown origin in the other. Sonograms of the liver showed, besides bile duct dilatations, intraluminal bulbar protrusions, bridge formation across dilated lumina, and portal radicles partially or completely surrounded by dilated bile ducts. Liver biopsy was performed in two patients, and in one patient, the biopsy sample confirmed the findings noted

A case of Caroli's disease is presented. Stress is laid on the importance of transcutaneous cholangiography in the diagnosis of this morbid form, and the usefulness of both echotomography and computed tomography. The latter permits visualisation of the intra- and extrahepatic bile ducts and indicates the extent of the disease. At the same time, it permits evaluation of any alterations of other organs. Attention is also drawn to the importance of careful diagnostic employment of these means of investigation. Emphasis is equally placed on the way complications can be prevented through medical an

Caroll's disease is characterized by congenital non-obstructive dilatation of the intrahepatic bile ducts of undefined etiology. It is a rare disease usually affecting the whole liver but it may affect a lobe or a segment (11). This study shows the evolution of 6 cases (2 boys and 4 giris) that were diagnosed with Caroli's disease at a referral service. Their ages ranged from 2 to 16 years--median age 10 years. One of the patients presented with cholangitis, while hepatomegaly was observed in 83% of the cases. Four of the patients presented biliary lithiasis and in one of these cholesterol cry

We describe a case of Caroli's disease associated with a choledochal cyst and autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease in a child whose diagnosis was confirmed with magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP), after initial abnormalities were seen by ultrasonography. Invasive procedures such as liver biopsy or endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) were, therefore, not necessary. Recent radiological advances in the diagnosis of Caroli's disease with particular emphasis on MRCP are discussed.

Caroli's disease, well known in the European literature, has been recognized infrequently in this country. The disease is characterized by cystic dilation of intrahepatic bile ducts and is complicated by formation of gallstones, cholangitis, and hepatic abscesses. Surgical intervention and therapy with antibiotics is often unsuccessful and Gram-negative septicemia is a common cause of death. Cysts may be present in other organs, such as kidney, pancreas, and spleen, and may be helpful in the early diagnosis of this rare disease.

A patient with Caroli's syndrome is reported; diagnosis was made by ERCP and ultrasonography. Caroli's disease occurred in its "pure" form in this patient, i.e. dilatation was present only in the intrahepatic biliary system while the extrahepatic bile ducts were normal. Pathogenesis and differential diagnosis are surveyed on the basis of available data. Further, the possibilities of treatment and prognosis are dealt with.

Caroli disease is a rare congenital disorder resulting from the dilation of large intrahepatic bile ducts. Patients affected with Caroli disease are at increased risk of complications resulting from bile stasis and stone formation. We report the case of a 37-year-old woman with a past surgical history of cholecystectomy who presented to the emergency room with a chief complaint of abdominal pain and nausea. The pain was characteristic of acute pancreatitis but she was hemodynamically stable. Total bilirubin was 4.1 mg/dL with a direct fraction of 3.1 mg/dL, aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and

Report of two cases. The authors report two observations in what concern the diffused form of the Caroli's disease, one pure, the other mixed associating the congenital dilatation of the intra-hepatic bileducts with lesion of congenital hepatic fibrosis. They emphasize the efficiency of the echographia and computed tomography in diagnosing Caroli's disease. The surgical treatment of these diffused forms often complicated by acute recurrent cholangitis used with some success various methods of biliary drainage. But the radical treatment seems to be obliged to turn itself more likely toward live

The Notch signaling pathway plays a key role in the morphogenesis of the biliary tree, but its involvement in cystic biliary diseases, such as Caroli disease (CD) and polycystic liver disease (PLD), has yet to be determined. Immunostaining was performed using liver sections of CD and PLD, and the results were compared with those of congenital hepatic fibrosis (CHF) and von Meyenburg complex (VMC). The expression of Notch receptor 1 (Notch1) was increased in the nuclei of biliary epithelial cells in all cases of CD and PLD, whereas it remained at a low level in CHF and VMC. In addition, Notch2

OBJECTIVE. The purpose of this multicenter retrospective study was to assess the MRCP features of Caroli disease (CD). MATERIALS AND METHODS. Sixty-six patients were identified from 2000 to 2019. The inclusion criteria were diagnosis of diffuse or localized CD mentioned in an imaging report, presence of intrahepatic bile duct (IHBD) dilatation, and having undergone an MRCP examination. The exclusion criteria included presence of obstructive proximal biliary stricture and having undergone hepatobiliary surgery other than cholecystectomy. Histopathology records were available for 53 of the 66 (8

INTRODUCTION: Caroli disease (CD) is a congenital dilatation of the intrahepatic bile ducts. In combination with liver fibrosis or cirrhosis, it is called Caroli syndrome (CS). Infectious complications and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma are secondary problems. The aim of this study was to analyse the clinical pattern and outcome in patients with CD/CS who underwent liver surgery.
METHODS: Between January 2004 and December 2016, 21 patients with CD/CS were treated with liver resection or transplantation (LTX) and post-operative data of patients with CD/CS were retrospectively analysed in a da

BACKGROUND: Caroli disease (CD) is characterized by dilation of the intrahepatic biliary tree, which may result in malignancy. Treatments include management of symptoms and hepatic resection to decrease disease burden. In patients with CD not amenable to these treatments, orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) has been used. This study examines if OLT is a reasonable treatment for patients with CD.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The United Network of Organ Sharing/Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network database between September 30, 1987 and March 31, 2011 was queried. Cases without patient or

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to describe central dot sign (tiny dots with strong contrast enhancement of the portal vein within dilated hepatic bile ducts on computed tomography) in entities other than Caroli disease, especially in peribiliary cysts with or without autosomal-dominant polycystic kidney disease.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Computed tomography in 74 cases of peribiliary cysts and 134 cases of other liver diseases and states possibly showing central dot sign were retrospectively reviewed to examine the central dot sign.
RESULTS: In three cases of peribiliary cysts, some p
