Flow-mediated vasodilation and carotid intima-media thickness in systemic sclerosis.

Increased evidence suggests an accelerated macrovascular disease in systemic sclerosis (SSc). Brachial artery flow-mediated vasodilation (FMD) and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) are two indicators of subclinic cardiovascular disease and are frequently used as surrogate measures of subclinic atherosclerosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate macrovascular involvement in SSc. We studied 35 SSc patients (6 males and 29 females; 11 with diffuse and 24 with limited disease) and 20 healthy controls. Brachial artery FMD was assessed by method described by Celermajer in all patients and 13 c

Carotid intima-media thickness in HIV patients treated with antiretroviral therapy.

INTRODUCTION: Increased cardiovascular risk in HIV patients in antiretroviral therapy (ART) may be due to HIV infection, direct effect of ART or dyslipidaemia induced by ART. Our aim was to study the relative importance of HIV, ART and dyslipidaemia on atherosclerosis, assessed by the comparison of carotid artery intima-media thickness (IMT) in non-smoking HIV patients with high or low serum cholesterol levels as well as in healthy volunteers. METHODS: HIV patients in ART with normal cholesterol (<or=5 x 5 mmol l(-1); n=13) or high cholesterol (>or=6 x 5 mmol l(-1); n=12) as well as healthy c

Combining carotid intima-media thickness with carotid plaque on screening for coronary heart disease.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound-detected carotid artery intima-media thickness (IMT) and carotid plaque are possible screening tests for coronary heart disease (CHD) among asymptomatic individuals. OBJECTIVE: To assess the increase in screening performance of combining carotid IMT and plaque compared with each measurement alone in the identification of individuals with CHD. METHODS: Ultrasound examination of left and right carotid arteries was performed on 100 individuals (median age 57), 55 with a history of CHD (unstable angina or myocardial infarction) and 45 without. IMT measurements were taken f

[Common carotid artery intima-media thickness, carotid atherosclerosis and subtypes of ischemic cerebral disease].

INTRODUCTION: Common carotid artery intima-media thickness (CCA-IMT) measurements are widely used to study atherosclerosis. CCA-IMT is a useful outcome measure in clinical studies and intervention trials because it reflects early stages of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular risk. The present study examined the relationship between common carotid artery intima-media thickness and ischemic brain infarction. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The present study examined the association between CCA-IMT and incidence of ischemic stroke and its subtypes in 75 cases and 21 controls. Cases with internal borderzone

Association of skin autofluorescence and carotid intima-media thickness in acromegaly patients.

BACKGROUND: The Pituitary Tumors Centers of Excellence (PTCOE) concept was established to provide a multimodal approach with careful management of comorbidities. Acromegaly, one of the main concerns of PTCOE per se, leads to increased mortality rates of which cardiovascular disease is an important cause. Increased skin autofluorescence (SAF) was shown to be associated with carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT), a well-established marker of atherosclerosis, and consequently cardiovascular complications. This study aimed to evaluate SAF and CIMT in association with anthropometric, clinical, and

Vitamin D Deficiency and Carotid Media-Intima Thickness in Childhood Cancer Survivors.

Childhood cancer survivors (CCS) are predisposed to developing numerous late effects of anticancer treatment later in life. The existing literature suggests that vitamin D deficiency (VDD) may influence cardiovascular abnormalities and metabolic diseases. The objectives of this study were to investigate the prevalence of VDD among childhood cancer survivors and examine the association of vitamin D deficiency and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT). The study comprised 111 childhood cancer survivors (62 males, 49 females) with a median follow-up time of 6.14 years. Vitamin D status was determi

Is Carotid Intima-Media Thickness Increased in Adults With Congenital Heart Disease?

Background Because of the increasing numbers of congenital patients surviving into adulthood, early diagnosis and prevention of acquired cardiovascular disease is reasonable. The aim of this study was to detect diagnostic subgroups of adults with congenital heart disease (ACHD) that have increased carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT), a subclinical marker of cardiovascular damage. Methods and Results This study enrolled 831 ACHD patients (392 women, aged 38.8±11.7 years) from May 2015 to February 2019 at their regular outpatient visit. Far wall cIMT was measured using a semiautomatic ultrasou

Expectations of Racism and Carotid Intima-Media Thickness in African American Women.

OBJECTIVE: Several researchers have argued that racism-related stressors play an important role in adverse cardiovascular outcomes among African American women. However, studies have primarily focused on experiences of racism; thus, the role of expectations of racism is insufficiently understood. The current proof-of-concept study was designed to examine associations among expectations of racism, self-reported experiences of racism, and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT), a marker of cardiovascular risk, in African American women. METHODS: Participants were 52 healthy African American women

Increased carotid intima-media thickness in African American pediatric kidney transplant recipients.

Early signs of subclinical CV dysfunction can be detected by ultrasound for CIMT. Although A-A are at high risk for CV disease, CIMT of A-A kidney transplant recipients has not been previously investigated. The aim of this prospective, controlled, longitudinal study was to investigate determinants of CIMT in a multiracial pediatric kidney transplant population, with a focus on A-A. Transplant recipients (n = 42) had BMI, waist-to-height ratio, fasting glucose, lipid panel, HbA1c%, and CIMT measured at 1, 18, and 30 months post-transplant. Twenty-four healthy children (14 A-A) served as control

Eplerenone improves carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) in patients with primary aldosteronism.

Primary aldosteronism (PA) is associated with a higher rate of cardiovascular events than essential hypertension. Although adrenalectomy has been reported to reduce carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) in patients with PA, the effects of the selective aldosterone blocker, eplerenone, on vascular damage in these patients remains unclear. To evaluate the effects of eplerenone on vascular status in PA patients, we sequentially measured carotid IMT (using computer software to calculate an average IMT for accurate and reproducible evaluation) in 22 patients including 8 patients treated by unilatera
