An arthroscopic biopsy procedure for obtaining osteochondral samples from the equine midcarpal joint.

An in vivo biopsy technique was developed to harvest cylindrical osteochondral core samples (2 mm diameter x 2 mm depth) from the articular surfaces of radial carpal bones in adult horses for use in osteoarthritis drug kinetic studies. A 25 degree arthroscope was introduced into the midcarpal joint through the dorsolateral surface, and a custom-built motorized core drill was introduced through the dorsomedial surface to create the osteochondral core samples. A total of 24 core samples were sequentially harvested in vivo, and 16 at postmortem, from eight horses on four different occasions withi

Treatment of hygromata in horses.

A surgical technique of open drainage, using penrose drains and pressure bandages, was used for the treatment of hygromata in four horses. In 3 cases with hygroma of the carpus, one with a secondary infection, there was complete resolution of the condition whereas in the one case with hygroma of the elbow resolution was more protracted because of difficulties in bandaging. The cosmetic and functional results after operation were most satisfactory.

Intersynovial fistula in the carpus of a horse.

Soft tissue lesions are often secondary to equine carpal injury. The clinical and pathological nature of soft tissue changes following carpal trauma are varied. This report describes a case of intersynovial fistula between the radial carpal joint and the common digital extensor tendon sheath. The differential diagnosis and pathological features of equine soft tissue carpal injuries are discussed.

Flexural Limb Deformities of the Carpus and Fetlock in Foals.

Early recognition and treatment of congenital and acquired flexural deformities of the carpi and fetlocks of foals can lead to conformation correction and an athletic future. Treatment is often based on rigid external coaptation assisted by systemic medical treatment. Foals that readily respond to treatment and correct conformation faults can have normal adult athletic expectations.

Itraconazole for treatment of sporotrichosis in a dog residing on a Christmas tree farm.

Sporotrichosis was diagnosed in a 2-year-old male Golden Retriever that was allowed to roam free on the owner's Christmas tree farm in Minnesota. Clinical signs had been evident for 1 month and included swelling of the claw bed of the third digit on the left forelimb and a fluctuant nodular lesion in the area of the left carpus. Few organisms were seen in affected tissues, and diagnosis was confirmed on the basis of results of fungal culture. The condition responded to treatment with itraconazole. Previous reports of sporotrichosis in dogs have described lesions that were distributed predomina

Kinematic and kinetic analysis of dogs during trotting after amputation of a thoracic limb.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize biomechanical differences in gait between dogs with and without an amputated thoracic limb. ANIMALS: Client-owned dogs (16 thoracic-limb amputee and 24 quadruped [control] dogs). PROCEDURES: Dogs were trotted across 3 in-series force platforms. Spatial kinematic and kinetic data were recorded for each limb during the stance phase. RESULTS: Amputees had significant increases in stance duration and vertical impulse in all limbs, compared with values for control dogs. Weight distribution was significantly increased by 14% on the remaining thoracic limb and by a combi

MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING SCORING OF AN EXPERIMENTAL MODEL OF POST-TRAUMATIC OSTEOARTHRITIS IN THE EQUINE CARPUS.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the most sensitive imaging modality to detect the early changes of osteoarthritis. Currently, there is no quantifiable method to tract these pathological changes over time in the horse. The objective of this experimental study was to characterize the progression of MRI changes in an equine model of post-traumatic osteoarthritis using a semiquantitative scoring system for whole-organ evaluation of the middle carpal joint. On day 0, an osteochondral fragment was created in one middle carpal joint (OCI) and the contralateral joint (CON) was sham-operated in 10

Carpal hyperflexion in a growing dog following neural injury to the distal brachium.

A three-month-old dobermann was presented with hyperfiexion of the right carpus. The abnormality had evolved over a three-week period, following circumferential soft tissue trauma to the distal brachium. The carpal joint angle measured at the limit of passive extension was 105 degrees compared with 175 degrees for the left carpus, and prevented placement of metacarpal and digital pads on the ground. Neurological examination revealed marked atrophy of the carpal extensors, an absent extensor carpi radialis reflex and moderate atrophy of the carpal flexors. Spontaneous electromyographic activity

Computed tomography and morphometry of the carpal canal in the dog.

This study has been carried out to determine the normal size and shape of the carpal canal in the dog and to describe the salient anatomic structures with the aid of computed tomography. Computed tomographic examination of the carpal region was performed in the left and right forelimbs of 5 male and 5 female healthy German shepherd dogs, respectively. Areas, depths and widths of the carpal canal and identification of the anatomical structures were determined at two levels of the carpal region. The frozen forelimbs of two cadavers were sectioned with a saw to correlate the CT images with these

Angular limb deformity in a calf treated by periosteotomy and wedge osteotomy.

A carpus valgus deformity was diagnosed in a five-week-old Brown Swiss calf. The 45 degrees deformity was caused by the malaligned healing of a fracture of the left metacarpus after birth trauma. The deviation improved to 25 degrees after being treated with a semicircular lateral periosteotomy above the distal physis of the radius. A complete correction was made by means of a wedge osteotomy five months after the first treatment. A 20 degrees wedge of bone was removed. The metacarpus was stabilised with a seven-hole dynamic compression plate which was removed 12 weeks later. Thirty months late

Percutaneous plate arthrodesis in small animals.

Arthrodesis is an elective surgical procedure designed to eliminate articular pain and dysfunction by deliberate osseous fusion. A percutaneous approach can be used to perform tarsal and carpal arthrodeses in dogs and cats. Intraoperative imaging facilitates cartilage debridement performed with a burr inserted through stab incisions. The plate is introduced through an epiperiosteal tunnel and secured with screws inserted through the skin insertion incisions. Additional screws can be placed through separate stab incisions. The primary advantage of this technique is a decreased risk of soft tiss

Surgical correction of carpal valgus deformity in three alpacas.

Two alpaca crias and one 14-month-old alpaca were referred for treatment of bilateral carpal valgus. In one cria, hemi-circumferential periosteal transection and elevation combined with an ulna osteotomy was performed initially without success, however transphyseal bridging with screws and wires was used successfully in both crias to straighten the limbs. As the distal radial and ulna growth plates had closed in the 14-month-old alpaca, bilateral wedge ostectomies of the distal radius and transfixation casts were used to straighten and stabilise the limbs. The ostectomy sites healed and the al

Stress-related bone injuries of the carpal joints in show jumping horses rarely limit long-term performance: a retrospective study of 15 cases.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the type and distribution of carpal joint lesions causing lameness in show jumping horses and describe their 1-year performance outcomes. ANIMALS: 15 show jumping horses (median age, 9 years; IQR, 8 to 11 years) of 3 different breeds, mostly Selle Français, evaluated at a referral center between 2013 and 2023. The inclusion criterion was forelimb lameness localized to the carpus, confirmed by perineural or IA analgesia and/or increased radiopharmaceutical uptake on scintigraphy. Horses with limb conformation abnormalities, a history of trauma, or extra-articular soft ti

Partial carpal arthrodesis for third degree carpal sprains. A review of 45 carpi.

The efficacy of partial carpal arthrodesis was evaluated retrospectively in 39 dogs (45 carpi) with severe sprains of the middle carpal joints, the carpometacarpal joints, or both. The carpometacarpal joint was the most frequently injured joint. Jumping or falling from heights was the cause of injury in 49% of these animals. Of the 25 owners who responded to a mailed questionnaire (mean follow-up, 32 months), all stated their animal had improved or greatly improved after partial carpal arthrodesis and all were pleased or very pleased with the final surgical result. Hyperextension persisted in

Computed Tomographic Tenography of the Equine Carpal Flexor Tendon Sheath.

Exploratory tenoscopy is considered the gold standard technique to identify intrathecal pathology of the equine carpal flexor tendon sheath (CFTS). Preoperative diagnosis allows for more precise prognostication and surgical planning, potentially associated with improved surgical outcomes. This prospective, descriptive, anatomical study aimed to describe the anatomy of the equine CFTS using noncontrast and contrast CT in clinically normal cadaver limbs. Ten pairs of equine forelimbs free of gross external abnormalities were examined from mid-antebrachium to distal metacarpus. Specimens initiall

Carpal valgus in llamas and alpacas: Retrospective evaluation of patient characteristics, radiographic features and outcomes following surgical treatment.

This study evaluated outcomes of surgical treatment for carpal valgus in New World camelids and correlated successful outcome (absence of carpal valgus determined by a veterinarian) with patient characteristics and radiographic features. Univariable and multivariable analyses of retrospective case data in 19 camelids (33 limbs) treated for carpal valgus between 1987 and 2010 revealed that procedures incorporating a distal radial transphyseal bridge were more likely (P = 0.03) to result in success after a single surgical procedure. A greater degree of angulation (> 19°, P = 0.02) and younger ag
