Differential inductions of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase and chalcone synthase during wounding, salicylic acid treatment, and salinity stress in safflower, Carthamus tinctorius.

Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) serves as a reference dicot for investigation of defence mechanisms in Asteraceae due to abundant secondary metabolites and high resistance/tolerance to environmental stresses. In plants, phenylpropanoid and flavonoid pathways are considered as two central defence signalling cascades in stress conditions. Here, we describe the isolation of two major genes in these pathways, CtPAL (phenylalanine ammonia-lyase) and CtCHS (chalcone synthase) in safflower along with monitoring their expression profiles in different stress circumstances. The aa (amino acid) seque

Astragalus membranaceus-Carthamus tinctorius herb pair antagonizes parthanatos in cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury via regulating PARP-1/TAX1BP1-mediated mitochondrial respiratory chain complex I.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The combination of Astragalus membranaceus (Huang Qi in Chinese, HQ) and Carthamus tinctorius (Hong Hua in Chinese, HH) is commonly employed for treating ischemic stroke (IS). The heavily oxidative environment of cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury (CI/RI) promotes activation of poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase-1 (PARP-1), which initiates parthanatos, a regulated cell death mode. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) bursting in mitochondrial respiratory chain complex I (Complex I) is a key cause of CI/RI. Nevertheless, the intrinsic mechanism of its involvement in Complex

Hydrogen sulfide mediates defense response in safflower by regulating secondary metabolism, oxidative defense, and elemental uptake under drought.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2 S) is a newly recognized molecule mediating plant defense responses under drought. The role of exogenous H2 S in regulating plant responses under drought has been reported in a few plant species including spinach, wheat, Arabidopsis, soybean, and citrus plants. However, no report is available on the outcome of exogenous H2 S on drought response in safflower plants. Therefore, the present study was planned to get insight into H2 S-mediated regulation of growth, secondary metabolism, oxidative defense, and uptake of minerals in two safflower cultivars (Safflower-16427 and Sa
