Metal-organic frameworks for sustainable asymmetric catalysis.

This feature article reviews recent advances in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as tunable platforms for asymmetric catalysis, with an emphasis on sustainable design strategies. The unique structural features of MOFs, including high porosity, well-defined architectures, and modularity, enable precise control over catalytic environments and facilitate the incorporation of active sites for enantioselective transformations. Particular attention is given to catalysts based on earth-abundant, non-toxic metals (e.g., Zr, Ti, Fe, Al, Cu, and Zn), the use of easily affordable and cost-effective ligand

Deoxycyanation of Alkyl Alcohols Using Photoredox Catalysis.

Cyano groups represent an important class of functional motifs in medicinal chemistry given their synthetic versatility and capacity to engage in essential interactions with biological targets. However, the synthesis of sterically hindered alkyl nitriles remains challenging, and, furthermore, traditional methods often rely on toxic cyanide sources. Herein, we report a photoredox-catalyzed, metal-free deoxycyanation of alkyl alcohols that allows rapid access to a wide array of 1°, 2°, and 3° cyanides using the easily handled, low-toxicity, tosyl cyanide reagent.

Recent Advances in Dual Palladium Photoredox Catalysis.

Dual palladium/photoredox catalysis has emerged as a versatile platform for constructing complex molecular architectures. These systems enable a broad range of transformations by integrating palladium's well-established roles in C─H activation and cross-coupling with the single-electron transfer capabilities of photocatalysts. Recent developments (2022-2026) in dual Pd/photoredox catalysis, from a mechanistic standpoint, reveal two interconnected activation pathways: conventional Pd(0)/Pd(II) catalytic cycles and photoredox-driven radical generation. This review focuses on mechanistic insights

Adaptive Photochemical Amination via Co(II) Catalysis.

Transition-metal-catalyzed amination of aryl halides is one of the most employed methods for constructing N-arylation adducts. However, the broad success of these reactions largely relies on the screening of precatalysts, elaborated ligands, and case-by-case optimization of reaction conditions (solvent, base, additive, temperature, etc.) for electronically or structurally diverse nucleophiles. Herein, we report an adaptive photochemical C-N coupling of aryl halides with various nitrogen nucleophiles (aliphatic and aromatic amines, amides, sulfonamides, pyrazoles, and ammonium salts) by Co(II)

P-Stereogenic Phosphorus Ligands in Asymmetric Catalysis.

Chiral phosphorus ligands play a crucial role in asymmetric catalysis for the efficient synthesis of useful optically active compounds. They are largely categorized into two classes: backbone chirality ligands and P-stereogenic phosphorus ligands. Most of the reported ligands belong to the former class. Privileged ones such as BINAP and DuPhos are frequently employed in a wide range of catalytic asymmetric transformations. In contrast, the latter class of P-stereogenic phosphorus ligands has remained a small family for many years mainly because of their synthetic difficulty. The late 1990s saw

Voltage-Driven Molecular Catalysis of Electrochemical Reactions.

Heterogeneous electrocatalysis and molecular redox catalysis have developed over several decades as two distinct ways to facilitate charge-transfer processes essential for energy conversion and storage. Whereas electrocatalytic reactions are driven by the applied voltage, molecular catalytic processes are driven by the difference between standard potentials of the catalyst and the reactant. Here, we demonstrate that the rate of electron transfer between a dissolved reactant and a molecular catalyst immobilized directly on the surface of a carbon nanoelectrode is governed by combination of chem

Al(Salen) Metal Complexes in Stereoselective Catalysis.

Salen ligands are a class of Schiff bases simply obtained through condensation of two molecules of a hydroxyl-substituted aryl aldehyde with an achiral or chiral diamine. The prototype salen, or N,N'-bis(salicylidene)ethylenediamine has a long history, as it was first reported in 1889, and immediately, some of its metal complexes were also described. Now, the salen ligands are a class of N,N,O,O tetradentate Schiff bases capable of coordinating many metal ions. The geometry and the stereogenic group inserted in the diamine backbone or aryl aldehyde backbone have been utilized in the past to ef

RNA catalysis emerges from dynamic structural ensembles.

The dynamic interplay between RNA structure and its associated Mg2+ ions is central to RNA function yet remains poorly understood at a near-atomic level1-4. Here, using a heterogeneity-focused protocol for cryo-electron microscopy data analysis of conformationally flexible RNA particles, we determined the structures of RNase P RNA ensembles composed of 76 coexisting active and inactive conformers that differ in a transient tertiary interaction that is critical for activity. The binding of the accessory protein does not change the local structure but induces thermodynamic allostery that enhance

Aluminium redox catalysis enables cyclotrimerization of alkynes.

Aluminium comprises over 8% of Earth's crust and is the most abundant metallic constituent1. Historically, aluminium catalysis has predominantly exploited the inherent Lewis acidity associated with its stable +III oxidation state2. Owing to its uniquely low electronegativity (1.61)-the lowest among p-block elements-and the absence of an inert-pair effect, aluminium presents formidable intrinsic challenges for engaging in catalytic redox transformations. Here we report the redox catalytic capability of a low-valent aluminium species, carbazolylaluminylene3, which carries out a complete Al(I)/Al

Nickel catalysis enables chemoselectivity in radiation chemistry.

Radiation chemistry studies the chemical effects of ionizing radiation on matter. It has found broad applications across diverse scientific, medical and industrial fields. Recently, radiation-mediated transformations have emerged as valuable tools for activating inert molecules or enabling late-stage functionalization. Nevertheless, these applications are often limited by poor chemoselectivity arising from the diverse radical species generated by radiation. Inspired by advances in radical tuning within metallaphotoredox chemistry, here we show that a nickel catalytic system may precisely regul

Switchable supramolecular helices for asymmetric stereodivergent catalysis.

Despite recent developments on the design of dynamic catalysts, none of them have been exploited for the in-situ control of multiple stereogenic centers in a single molecular scaffold. We report herein that it is possible to obtain in majority any amongst the four possible stereoisomers of an amino alcohol by means of a switchable asymmetric catalyst built on supramolecular helices. Hydrogen-bonded assemblies between a benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide (BTA) achiral phosphine ligand coordinated to copper and a chiral BTA comonomer are engaged in a copper-hydride catalyzed hydrosilylation and hydroa

Dissipative sequential catalysis via six-component machinery.

Triphenyl phosphane (TPP) and an epoxide as a fuel system transiently transformed a non-catalytic six-component turnstile into a four-component catalytic rotor releasing N-methyl pyrrolidine and a copper(I) complex. The two latter compounds acted synergistically as catalysts to perform first a Michael addition and then a 5-exo-dig cyclization, giving rise to dissipative sequential catalysis.

Synthesis of Cyclopropanes via Hydrogen-Borrowing Catalysis.

Cyclopropanes are highly useful motifs that are often incorporated into drug candidates to improve potency, metabolic stability, or pharmacokinetic properties. An expedient method for the α-cyclopropanation of ketones using hydrogen borrowing (HB) catalysis is described. The transformation occurs via HB alkylation of a hindered ketone with subsequent intramolecular displacement of a pendant leaving group affording the cyclopropanated product. The leaving group can be installed in either the ketone or alcohol component of the HB system, giving access to α-cyclopropyl ketones via two complementa

Single-Atom Catalysis: Insights from Model Systems.

The field of single-atom catalysis (SAC) has expanded greatly in recent years. While there has been much success developing new synthesis methods, a fundamental disconnect exists between most experiments and the theoretical computations used to model them. The real catalysts are based on powder supports, which inevitably contain a multitude of different facets, different surface sites, defects, hydroxyl groups, and other contaminants due to the environment. This makes it extremely difficult to determine the structure of the active SAC site using current techniques. To be tractable, computation
