BACKGROUND: Peritonitis is one of the limiting factors for the growth of peritoneal dialysis (PD) worldwide and is a major cause of technique failure. Several studies have examined the effectiveness of various catheter-related interventions for lowering the risk of PD-related peritonitis. This is an update of a review first published in 2004.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the role of different catheter implantation techniques and catheter types in lowering the risk of PD-related peritonitis in PD patients.
SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Kidney and Transplant Register of Studies up to 15

Tunneled central venous catheters (CVC) are essential vascular access for many maintenance hemodialysis(HD) patients, yet catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSI) remain a persistent complication driven by biofilm formation and multidrug-resistant organisms, creating a clinical dilemma between source control (catheter removal) and vascular access preservation. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence across HD-CRBSI epidemiology, pathogenesis, prevention, treatment, and future directions, and provides an evidence-based, decision-oriented management framework. Key contributions

Catheter-related bloodstream infection (CRBSI) is an important clinical problem that causes significant mortality and excess economic cost. Recent epidemiological trends indicate a shift in CRBSI pathogens from Gram-positive to Gram-negative bacilli, among which Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Acinetobacter baumannii predominate due to their strong antibiotic resistance and biofilm-forming capabilities. Recently, bacteriophage-encoded depolymerases have emerged as promising antivirulence agents that resensitize bacteria to host immunity by degrading capsular polysaccharides

BACKGROUND: We aimed to describe the epidemiology of catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs) in onco-hematological neutropenic patients during a 25-year study period, to evaluate the risk factors for Gram-negative bacilli (GNB) CRBSI, as well as rates of inappropriate empirical antibiotic treatments (IEAT) and mortality.
MATERIALS/METHODS: All consecutive episodes of CRBSIs were prospectively collected (1994-2018). Changing epidemiology was evaluated comparing five-year time spans. A multivariate regression model was built to evaluate risk factors for GNB CRBSIs.
RESULTS: 482 monomi

Uncomplicated bacteremia and catheter-related bloodstream infection (CRBSI) are frequently suggested as factors associated with low risk of infective endocarditis in Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia (SAB). Nevertheless, guidelines recommend that echocardiography in all patients with SAB. We evaluated the effects of echocardiography on patient outcomes. Patients with uncomplicated S. aureus CRBSI were retrospectively identified between January 2013 and June 2018 at a 1950-bed, tertiary-care university hospital. Treatment failure was defined as any case of relapse or all-cause death within 90 da

BACKGROUND: Catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs) are currently detected in patients with clinically suspicion. The aim of our study was to evaluate whether CRBSIs could be anticipated and detected in a subclinical stage by peptide nucleic acid fluorescence in situ hybridization (PNA FISH) using universal hybridization probes or acridine orange leucocyte cytospin (AOLC) tests in haematooncological patients with central venous catheters (CVCs) in situ.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Peptide nucleic acid fluorescence in situ hybridization and AOLC tests using blood samples from one CVC lumen

INTRODUCTION: To evaluate the efficacy of Daptomycin (DPT) lock therapy in the treatment of Grampositive long-term catheter-related bloodstream infections (LT-CRBI).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of all patients receiving DPT lock therapy for the treatment of LT-CRBI from December 2009 to May 2010 was conducted. The primary endpoint used in this study was failure to cure the episode of LT-CRBI. Cure was defined as fever disappearance, negative blood cultures within 1 month after the end of treatment, and catheter salvage.
RESULTS: Thirteen subjects (seven men, mean age 62 year

The elderly population is more likely to have urinary catheters used than younger populations. Most patients with short term indwelling catheters (those in place less than 30 days) will be residents of acute care institutions. The frequency of catheter-acquired bacteriuria is greater with longer durations of catheterisation, female gender, failure to maintain a closed drainage system, and in patients not receiving systemic antimicrobials. Systemic antimicrobials given within 48 hours of catheter removal decrease the incidence of urinary infection, but are not currently recommended because of c

Pyrogenic reactions are characterized by fever, chills, hypotension, or a combination of these developing during or shortly after hemodialysis in a previously asymptomatic patient. The temporal association with treatment implicates exposure of the patient's blood to bacterial pyrogens from contaminated dialysate or a reused dialyzer. Routine body temperature monitoring is recommended to detect these exposures. The current study was prompted by the appearance of several symptomatic febrile episodes in patients who were asymptomatic and afebrile before treatment with high-flux hemodialysis. Duri

UNLABELLED: Early empirical management of pediatric catheter-related infections (CRI) is complicated by delayed microbiological confirmation and heterogeneous local pathogen epidemiology. Pathogen-specific clinical and inflammatory profiling may facilitate contextual risk assessment at the time of clinical suspicion. In this retrospective single-center cohort study, 291 CRI episodes contributed by 177 pediatric patients between March 1, 2020, and February 29, 2024, were analyzed. Clinical variables at catheter insertion and inflammatory biomarkers at infection onset were evaluated. CRI episode…

Short-term peripheral venous catheters (PVCs) are commonly used in healthcare settings. To determine the magnitude of bloodstream infections (BSIs) related to their use, PubMed, article bibliographies, and the authors' library were searched for pertinent articles. The incidence of PVC-related BSIs was 0.18% among 85063 PVCs. Short-term PVCs accounted for a mean of 6.3% and 23% of nosocomial BSIs and nosocomial catheter-related BSIs, respectively. Prolonged dwell time and catheter insertion under emergent conditions increased risk of PVC-related bloodstream infection (PVCR-BSI). If approximatel

In modem medicine, central venous catheters (CVCs) have a pivotal role in the management of critically ill patients. The most serious complication of effective CVC placement is catheter-related bloodstream infection (CRBSI). Microbial colonization and CRBSI are the byproducts of the interaction of 4 factors: (1) microbial factors (hydrophobicity and exopolysaccharide production), (2) host factors (such protein adhesins as fibrin and fibronectin that attach to the catheter surface), (3) catheter material (hydrophobicity, surface charges, thrombogenicity), and (4) iatrogenic factors (total paren

The most common source of nosocomial infection is the urinary tract, especially if they it is drained with a urethral catheter. Catheter-associated urinary tract infections account for at least 80% of all complicated urinary tract infections and are the most common type of hospital-acquired infection. Intestinal microflora plays the leading role in the pathogenesis of catheter-associated urinary tract infections, whereas the most important risk factor for their development is the long duration of urinary catheter drainage. In the case of short-term and intermittent catheterization, routine ant

Catheter-related bloodstream infection (CRBSI) is one of the common healthcare-acquired infections imposing a high burden of morbidity and mortality on the patients. Non-tuberculous mycobacterium is a rare aetiology for CRBSI and poses challenges in laboratory diagnosis and clinical management. This is a case of a woman in her early 60s with underlying end-stage renal failure, diabetes mellitus and hypertension presented with a 2-week history of high-grade fever postregular haemodialysis, vomiting, lethargy and altered mental status.Blood cultures from a permanent catheter and peripheral taken
