Capture-mark-recapture data on the strictly protected Speleomantes italicus.

This data set collects capture-mark-recapture data, biometric data, and stomach contents of seven populations of the Italian cave salamander (Speleomantes italicus), one of the strictly protected European plethodontid species endemic to mainland Italy. We monitored six subterranean populations inside caves, and one fully epigean population living in a forest, surveying a total area of >5200 m2 . Data collection was performed 24 times throughout a year for each of the subterranean populations, and seven times in late winter-early spring for the epigean population. Salamanders were individually

Vascular and Osteological Morphology of Expanded Digit Tips Suggests Specialization in the Wandering Salamander (Aneides vagrans).

For over a century researchers have marveled at the square-shaped toe tips of several species of climbing salamanders (genus Aneides), speculating about the function of large blood sinuses therein. Wandering salamanders (Aneides vagrans) have been reported to exhibit exquisite locomotor control while climbing, jumping, and gliding high (88 m) within the redwood canopy; however, a detailed investigation of their digital vascular system has yet to be conducted. Here, we describe the vascular and osteological structure of, and blood circulation through, the distal regions of the toes of A. vagran

Husbandry, Captive Breeding, and Field Survey of Chinese Giant Salamander (Andrias davidianus).

The Chinese giant salamander (Andrias davidianus) is the largest extant amphibian species in the world with adults capable of reaching 2 m in length. Wild populations of A. davidianus have declined dramatically during the last century, making it also one of the top threatened species globally. Fortunately, aquaculture for this species developed in China during the 1970s has been extremely successful. Many relevant commercial products of A. davidianus have been produced in recent years on account of its nutritional and medicinal values. Balancing conservation and utilization will be key to the

Positional Memory in Vertebrate Regeneration: A Century's Insights from the Salamander Limb.

Salamanders, such as axolotls and newts, can regenerate complex tissues including entire limbs. But what mechanisms ensure that an amputated limb regenerates a limb, and not a tail or unpatterned tissue? An important concept in regeneration is positional memory-the notion that adult cells "remember" spatial identities assigned to them during embryogenesis (e.g., "head" or "hand") and use this information to restore the correct body parts after injury. Although positional memory is well documented at a phenomenological level, the underlying cellular and molecular bases are just beginning to be

Are they arboreal? Climbing abilities and mechanics in the red-backed salamander (Plethodon cinereus).

While red-backed salamanders (Plethodon cinereus) are most often observed in terrestrial forested areas, several studies report arboreal substrate use and climbing behavior. However, salamanders do not have any of the anatomical features commonly observed in specialized climbing species (e.g., claws, setae, suction cups). Instead, salamanders cling to surfaces using the shear and adhesive properties of their mucous layer. In this study, we explore the capabilities and spatiotemporal gait patterns of arboreal locomotion in the red-backed salamander as they move across twelve substrate condition

Nitrogen gas-bubble disease in two giant salamanders.

Gas-bubble disease (GBD)-a non-infectious disease in aquatic organisms caused by supersaturated levels of total dissolved gases (oxygen and nitrogen) in water-is well known in various species, including fish and amphibians, but has not previously been reported in giant salamanders. In the present study, macroscopic and histopathological examinations of 2 mature Andrias spp. (kept with 293 fish in an aquarium) were performed to characterize GBD pathology. Bubbles developed on the body surfaces of the salamanders and fish, with erythema specifically noted in the salamanders. Within 3 d of the bu

Inducing Vertebrate Limb Regeneration: A Review of Past Advances and Future Outlook.

Limb loss due to traumatic injury or amputation is a major biomedical burden. Many vertebrates exhibit the ability to form and pattern normal limbs during embryogenesis from amorphous clusters of precursor cells, hinting that this process could perhaps be activated later in life to rebuild missing or damaged limbs. Indeed, some animals, such as salamanders, are proficient regenerators of limbs throughout their life span. Thus, research over the last century has sought to stimulate regeneration in species that do not normally regenerate their appendages. Importantly, these efforts are not only

A new small-sized stem salamander from the Middle Jurassic of Western Siberia, Russia.

Salamanders (Caudata) are one of the three modern groups of amphibians known from the Middle Jurassic. The early stages of evolution of these amphibians are still poorly known, especially for stem taxa of Jurassic age. A new small-sized stem salamander, Egoria malashichevi gen. et sp. nov., from the Middle Jurassic (Bathonian) Itat Formation of the Berezovsk Quarry locality in Western Siberia, Russia, is described on the basis of isolated vertebrae, including an atlas centrum and a fragmentary trunk vertebra centrum previously referred to an undescribed salamander taxon ("Berezovsk salamander

The Lack of Nasolacrimal Ducts in Plethodontid Salamanders?

Nasolacrimal ducts are a terrestrial vertebrate adaptation and appear to have co-evolved with orbital glands. Although plethodontid salamanders possess orbital glands, a recent study concluded that plethodontid salamanders lack nasolacrimal ducts. Functionally, the absence of nasolacrimal ducts closes the route for orbital gland secretion passage into the nasal and vomeronasal organ cavities. Orbital glands have been implicated in enhancement of vomeronasal function so loss could have important implications for communication. Multiple older studies depict or discuss nasolacrimal ducts in pleth

Using salamanders as model taxa to understand vertebrate feeding constraints during the late Devonian water-to-land transition.

The vertebrate water-to-land transition and the rise of tetrapods brought about fundamental changes for the groups undergoing these evolutionary changes (i.e. stem and early tetrapods). These groups were forced to adapt to new conditions, including the distinct physical properties of water and air, requiring fundamental changes in anatomy. Nutrition (or feeding) was one of the prime physiological processes these vertebrates had to successfully adjust to change from aquatic to terrestrial life. The basal gnathostome feeding mode involves either jaw prehension or using water flows to aid in inge

Disease state associated with chronic toe lesions in hellbenders may alter anti-chytrid skin defenses.

Hellbenders (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis) are large, aquatic salamanders from the eastern United States. Both subspecies, eastern and Ozark hellbenders, have experienced declines resulting in federal listing of Ozark hellbenders. The globally distributed chytrid fungus, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) has been detected in both subspecies, and Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans (Bsal) poses a new threat if introduced into North America. Ozark hellbenders also suffer a high prevalence of toe lesions of unknown etiology, with changes in host immunocompetence hypothesized to contribute. Antimi

Tig1 regulates proximo-distal identity during salamander limb regeneration.

Salamander limb regeneration is an accurate process which gives rise exclusively to the missing structures, irrespective of the amputation level. This suggests that cells in the stump have an awareness of their spatial location, a property termed positional identity. Little is known about how positional identity is encoded, in salamanders or other biological systems. Through single-cell RNAseq analysis, we identified Tig1/Rarres1 as a potential determinant of proximal identity. Tig1 encodes a conserved cell surface molecule, is regulated by retinoic acid and exhibits a graded expression along

Morphological and taxonomic reexamination on a crocodile newt recently described from Japan (Urodela, Salamandridae, Echinotriton).

A crocodile newt, Echinotriton raffaellii, recently described from the Amami islands in the Ryukyu archipelago, western Japan has been regarded as Amami lineage of E. andersoni from the Okinawa islands, to which it is morphologically very similar, but genetically divergent. In the original description of E. raffaellii, only two specimens, including one born in captivity, were examined and only limited morphological comparisons with E. andersoni were made. Here we examined the morphological characteristics of E. raffaellii with an ample set of specimens, compared them with those of E. andersoni

A new, narrowly endemic species of swamp-dwelling dusky salamander (Plethodontidae: Desmognathus) from the Gulf Coastal Plain of Mississippi and Alabama.

We describe a new, narrowly endemic species of swamp-dwelling dusky salamander (Plethodontidae: Desmognathus pascagoula sp. nov.) from the Gulf Coastal Plain of southeastern Mississippi and southwestern Alabama based on linear morphometrics, mitochondrial DNA, and single nucleotide polymorphisms from 881 loci produced using genotype-by-sequencing. Some populations of the new species were historically referred to as D. auriculatus, a polyphyletic assemblage of at least three species in the Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plain from Texas to North Carolina. Populations of D. auriculatus from the Gulf

ABSENCE OF BATRACHOCHYTRIUM SALAMANDRIVORANS IN A GLOBAL HOTSPOT FOR SALAMANDER BIODIVERSITY.

Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans (Bsal) is an emerging fungal pathogen that affects salamander and newt populations in Asia and Europe. In the Western Hemisphere, Bsal represents a major threat to endemic amphibian populations, which have not evolved resistance to infection, and which could experience local extinction events such as those observed in European fire salamanders (Salamandra salamandra). We report findings of a survey focusing specifically on wild lungless salamanders in the southeastern US, the most biodiverse location for salamander species globally. Between May 2016 and July 2

Microclimate limits thermal behaviour favourable to disease control in a nocturnal amphibian.

While epizootics increasingly affect wildlife, it remains poorly understood how the environment shapes most host-pathogen systems. Here, we employ a three-step framework to study microclimate influence on ectotherm host thermal behaviour, focusing on amphibian chytridiomycosis in fire salamanders (Salamandra salamandra) infected with the fungal pathogen Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans (Bsal). Laboratory trials reveal that innate variation in thermal preference, rather than behavioural fever, can inhibit infection and facilitate salamander recovery under humidity-saturated conditions. Yet, a

Pathogenic chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, but not B. salamandrivorans, detected on eastern hellbenders.

Recent worldwide declines and extinctions of amphibian populations have been attributed to chytridiomycosis, a disease caused by the pathogenic fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd). Until recently, Bd was thought to be the only Batrachochytrium species that infects amphibians; however a newly described species, Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans (Bs), is linked to die-offs in European fire salamanders (Salamandra salamandra). Little is known about the distribution, host range, or origin of Bs. In this study, we surveyed populations of an aquatic salamander that is declining in the United

Dorsal laminectomy in a two-toed amphiuma (Amphiuma means).

An adult male two-toed amphiuma (Amphiuma means) was evaluated for kyphosis and a self-inflicted ulcerative dermal lesion at the site of a midbody spinal deformity. Radiology revealed a proliferative bony lesion at the 39th vertebra. A dorsal laminectomy was performed to alleviate pressure on the spinal cord believed to be secondary to bone remodeling. Resolution of the scoliosis occurred at the surgical site, and the ulcerative lesion of the body wall healed. Three weeks postoperatively, the amphiuma resumed self-mutilation caudal to the surgery site. Euthanasia was elected. Necropsy revealed
