An endangered cave-roosting insectivorous bat supports strongly distinct macro-invertebrate communities in caves of an oceanic island.

Cave ecosystems are often underrepresented in global conservation management, despite frequently holding diverse biota. As key providers of allochthonous nutrient, cave-roosting bats are important in sustaining cave food webs through guano deposits. However, bat populations globally are declining, thereby threatening cavernicolous biodiversity. Oceanic island caves, in particular, face elevated risks due to their additional isolation which may be expected to increase vulnerability of their associated biodiversity to extinction. Understanding the influence of cave-roosting bat on eventual cave-

Contralateral approach to carotid cave aneurysms.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the surgical approach and clipping of aneurysms located at the carotid cave region. METHOD: Between 1980 and 1998 we have adopted the well known ipsilateral approach for exposure and securing of carotid cave aneurysms. In four patients, we had the opportunity to use a contralateral approach to carotid cave aneurysms, with easier dissection and application of a simple aneurysmal clip. The visual acuity of the patients did not deteriorate from the pre-operative level. FINDING AND INTERPRETATION: Aneurysms located at the carotid cave region may be approached easily and s

Adenocarcinoma of Meckel's cave: case report.

A rare localization of adenocarcinoma in Meckel's cave is reported in a 58-year-old woman, who had a 5-month history of pain and altered sensation in the second division of the left trigeminal nerve. Removal of the lesion was achieved by a subtemporal route. Histology showed this to be an adenocarcinoma. The patient underwent investigations for a primary tumor; the investigations were all negative, and the patient was subsequently treated with a course of radiotherapy. At 4-month follow-up, there was no evidence of recurrence, and she remains symptomatically well. The various mechanisms of sec

Sequence of mammalian fossils, including hominoid teeth, from the Bubing Basin caves, South China.

A Plio-Pleistocene to Holocene faunal sequence has been recovered from four carefully excavated caves in the Bubing Basin, adjacent to the larger Bose Basin of South China. The caves vary in elevation; we suggest that the higher caves were formed and filled with sediments prior to the lower caves. The highest deposits, which are from Mohui Cave, contain hominoid teeth and other fossilized remains of mammalian taxa most similar to late Pliocene and early Pleistocene faunas. Wuyun Cave ( approximately 50m lower in elevation than Mohui) contains a late middle Pleistocene fauna, which is supported

Fate and preservation of the late pleistocene cave bears from Niedźwiedzia Cave in Poland, through taphonomy, pathology, and geochemistry.

This comprehensive study examines fossil remains from Niedźwiedzia Cave in the Eastern Sudetes, offering detailed insights into the palaeobiology and adversities encountered by the Pleistocene cave bear Ursus spelaeus ingressus. Emphasising habitual cave use for hibernation and a primarily herbivorous diet, the findings attribute mortality to resource scarcity during hibernation and habitat fragmentation amid climate shifts. Taphonomic analysis indicates that the cave was extensively used by successive generations of bears, virtually unexposed to the impact of predators. The study also reveals

Adaptive response of prokaryotic communities to extreme pollution flooding in a Paleolithic rock art cave (Pindal Cave, northern Spain).

A flood event affecting Pindal Cave, a UNESCO World Heritage site, introduced a substantial amount of external sediments and waste into the cave. This event led to the burial of preexisting sediments, altering the biogeochemical characteristics of the cave ecosystem by introducing heightened levels of organic matter, nitrogen compounds, phosphorus, and heavy metals. The sediments included particulate matter and waste from a cattle farm located within the water catchment area of the cavity, along with diverse microorganisms, reshaping the cave microbial community. This study addresses the ongoi

Prokaryotic community profiles from Guánica state forest caves revealed by 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing.

Cave environments harbor microorganisms adapted to extreme conditions. Prokaryotic diversity was assessed using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing across four caves in the Guánica State Forest. The resulting data set characterizes phylum-level community composition within an understudied subtropical dry-forest cave system and provides baseline information for future microbial and ecological investigations.

Genomic evidence for aerotrophy as a defining trait of Ktedonobacteria inhabiting silica-rich oligotrophic caves.

Members of the class Ktedonobacteria (phylum Chloroflexota) are widespread across various terrestrial environments, including oligotrophic caves, although the genomic basis underlying this distribution remains unclear. Here, we present a systematic genomic analysis of Ktedonobacteria across ecosystems, with a focus on oligotrophic caves. Cave Ktedonobacteria belong to novel genera within the Ktedonobacteraceae and harbour genes associated with a mixotrophic metabolism combining the use of organic and inorganic substrates as energy and carbon sources. Comparative analyses of all available Ktedo

New species of bristletails of the family Machilidae (Microcoryphia) from caves in Abkhazia and Ukraine.

Two new species of bristletails of the family Machilidae are described from caves in the Western Caucasus (troglophile Coryphophthalmus troglophilus sp. nov.) and in the Eastern Carpathians (trogloxene Trigoniophthalmus ukrainensis sp. nov.). The main morphological adaptations of C. troglophilus sp. nov. to life in caves include green eye color; weak body pigmentation; well-developed arolium and claws; relatively long cerci, tarsae and tibiae of the hind legs; long apical needles of the urostyli; large sublateral spines on urocoxites IX. C. troglophilus sp. nov. resembles C. abchasicus (Kaplin

Hominin vertebrae and upper limb bone fossils from Sterkfontein Caves, South Africa (1998-2003 excavations).

OBJECTIVES: We provide descriptions and functional interpretations of 11 >2.0 Ma hominin vertebral and upper limb fossils from Sterkfontein. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We employed taphonomic methods to describe postmortem damage observed on the fossils. We used osteometric tools and measurements to generate quantitative descriptions, which were added to qualitative descriptions of the fossils. These observations were then interpreted using published data on the same skeletal elements from extant and extinct hominoid taxa. RESULTS: Six of the fossils carry carnivore tooth marks. Two vertebrae sho

Prehispanic (Guanches) mummies and natrium salts in burial caves of Las Cañadas del Teide (Tenerife).

The prehispanic population of Tenerife (Guanches) buried their dead in caves. Many corpses are totally or partially mummified. Embalming procedures are largely unknown, besides some information recorded by chroniclers and the general idea that environmental conditions in some areas may favour natural mummification. Detailed observation of burial caves containing mummified corpses revealed the presence of a white mineral in form of crusts or powder that was not present in the vast majority of non-burial caves, especially in basaltic and trachybasaltic lava flows. We analysed these crusts and th

Surgical management of meningiomas originating in Meckel's cave.

OBJECTIVE: To define the difference of meningiomas that originate in the area of Meckel's cave (MC) (primary MC meningiomas) in regard to the different surgical approaches and postoperative results. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of all meningiomas involving the cranial base displayed 21 cases of meningiomas originating in MC (primary MC meningiomas). These cases were classified according to the tumor extension in four different types: Type I, tumors mainly confined to MC; Type II, MC meningiomas with extension into the middle fossa; Type III, MC meningiomas with extension into the posteri

Carotid cave aneurysms of the internal carotid artery.

In a series of 32 surgical cases of carotid-ophthalmic artery aneurysm, seven of the lesions were located in the "carotid cave." This special type of aneurysm is usually small and projects medially on the anteroposterior view of the angiogram. At surgery, it is located intradurally at the dural penetration of the internal carotid artery (ICA) on the ventromedial side, appears to be buried in the dural pouch (carotid cave), and is often difficult to find, dissect, and clip. The aneurysm extends into the cavernous sinus space, and the parent ICA penetrates the dural ring obliquely. An ipsilatera

Genomic, Molecular Networking-Based Metabolomic, and Bioactivity Profiling of Actinobacteria from Undisturbed Caves in Pakistan.

Caves are a unique ecosystem that harbor diverse microorganisms, and provide a challenging environment to the dwelling microbial communities, which may boost gene expression and can lead to the production of inimitable bioactive natural products. In this study, we obtained 59 actinobacteria from four different caves located in Bahadurkhel, District Karak, Pakistan. On the basis of taxonomic characteristics, 30 isolates were selected and screened for secondary metabolites production and bioactivity profiling. The extracts of all the isolates exhibited promising antibacterial activity against se

PacBio HiFi sequencing datasets of culture-enriched airborne microbial cave communities from dolomitic Sudwala Caves, South Africa.

We present a dataset integrating physico-chemical air quality measurements with long-read PacBio HiFi shotgun metagenomic sequences from culture-enriched airborne samples collected in Sudwala Caves, one of the oldest known cave systems in South Africa. This resource provides baseline characterization of airborne microbial communities and associated environmental parameters within a subterranean karst ecosystem. A total of 106 air samples were collected across six different cave compartments and three external reference sites spanning two seasonal periods, the winter-spring transition (Septembe
