[Correlation of oral allergy syndrome due to plant-derived foods with alder pollen, rbet v 1 and rbet v 2 sensitization in Yokohama region].

BACKGROUND/AIM: Oral allergy syndrome (OAS) to plant foods is often caused by cross-reactivity to pollen. We investigated whether there was any significant correlation between sensitization to the pollen of alder and Japanese cedar flying off in spring and prevalence of OAS in Yokohama region. METHODS: We measured specific IgE antibodies (CAP-FEIA: CAP) against alder and Japanese cedar in 337 outpatients with skin allergy in 2005 (M:F=167:170, 33.4 years of age, on the average). In the patients who showed positive response to CAP against alder and Japanese cedar, we also tested response to CA

Mast cell hyperplasia induced by multiple challenge with cedar pollen in sensitised guinea pigs.

OBJECTIVE AND DESIGN: Because immediate allergic symptoms are aggravated by repetitive antigen challenges in a guinea pig model of Japanese cedar pollen-induced conjunctivitis, we determined whether conjunctival mast cells are different in number between the acute and chronic stages. METHODS: Sensitised guinea pigs were challenged by dropping a pollen suspension into their eyes once a week. Conjunctival tissue sections were stained with toluidine blue. Ophthalmic lavage was performed to assay for mast cell mediators. RESULTS: At the 20th and 40th challenges, the number of mast cells increase

A Case of Pulmonary Actinomycosis Associated With Aspiration of Cedar Leaves.

The aspiration of foreign bodies may induce various infectious diseases, including actinomycosis, and its association with foreign bodies has been reported. We encountered a patient who developed Actinomyces-induced lung abscess associated with aspiration of cedar leaves. The patient was a 56-year-old Japanese woman who aspirated decorative cedar leaves contained in a lunch box while eating a meal, and coughing and bloody phlegm occurred thereafter. A mass was noted in the right lower lobe of the lung on plain chest computed tomography on the first consultation, and granules of Actinomyces wer

Effect of oral antigen administration on nasal blockage in experimental allergic rhinitis in guinea pigs.

OBJECTIVE AND DESIGN: We evaluated the effectiveness of oral treatment with Japanese cedar pollen on experimental allergic rhinitis in guinea pigs. SUBJECTS: Male Hartley guinea pigs. TREATMENT: From 16 days before the first sensitisation, 1 and 100 mg/time/animal pollen suspension was orally administered twice weekly. Animals were then sensitised and repeatedly challenged with the pollen. METHOD: Guinea pigs were sensitised by intranasal instillation of cedar pollen extracts adsorbed onto Al(OH)3 at a dose of 0.3 microg pollen protein/0.3 mg Al(OH)3/3 microl/nostril twice a day for 7 days.

The Therapeutic Potential of Essential Oils in Managing Inflammatory Skin Conditions: A Scoping Review.

Conventional therapy is commonly used for the treatment of inflammatory skin conditions, but undesirable effects, such as erythema, dryness, skin thinning, and resistance to treatment, may cause poor patient compliance. Therefore, patients may seek complementary treatment with herbal plant products including essential oils (EOs). This scoping review aims to generate a broad overview of the EOs used to treat inflammatory skin conditions, namely, acne vulgaris, dermatitis and eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea, in a clinical setting. The quality, efficacy, and safety of various EOs, as well as the w

Construction of an environmental exposure unit and investigation of the effects of cetirizine hydrochloride on symptoms of cedar pollinosis in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Cedar pollinosis is a widespread seasonal allergy that is unique to Japan. Environmental exposure units (EEU) assist in the development of effective therapeutic and preventive measures because outdoor studies are limited by seasonal variation in pollen exposure. OBJECTIVES: We constructed an EEU to conduct a randomized cross-over double-blind placebo-controlled study of the efficacy of cetirizine (Zyrtec), a second-generation antihistamine. METHODS: The spatial and temporal homogeneity of pollen distribution in the EEU was evaluated by counting the number of pollen grains on petr

An integrated analysis of the efficacy of fluticasone furoate nasal spray on individual nasal and ocular symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis.

Intranasal steroids have been shown to affect ocular symptoms of allergic rhinitis (AR). The results of the published literature, however, are not uniform across all products. This study was designed to evaluate whether the effects of fluticasone furoate nasal spray (FFNS) are consistent across different allergy seasons and different geographic regions for individual nasal and ocular symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis (SAR). An integrated analysis was performed on data from four randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, multicenter trials, designed to evaluate the effic

Evaluation of Heartwood Extracts Combined with Linseed Oil as Wood Preservatives in Field Tests in Southern Mississippi, USA.

Heartwood extracts of naturally durable wood species are often evaluated as alternatives to chemical wood preservatives, but field data from long-term performance testing are lacking. The current study evaluated the long-term (five-year) performance of two non-durable wood species treated with heartwood extracts of either Tectona grandis, Dalbergia sissoo, Cedrus deodara, or Pinus roxburghii alone or combined with linseed oil. Stakes (45.7 × 1.9 × 1.9 cm) and blocks (12.5 × 3.75 × 2.5 cm) cut from the sapwood of cottonwood and southern pine were vacuum-pressure impregnated with the individual

Inhibitory effect of a new orally active cedrol-loaded nanostructured lipid carrier on compound 48/80-induced mast cell degranulation and anaphylactic shock in mice.

BACKGROUND: Type I hypersensitivity is an allergic reaction characterized by the overactivity of the immune system provoked by normally harmless substances. Glucocorticoids, anti-histamines, or mast cell stabilizers are the choices of treatment for type I hypersensitivity. Even though these drugs have the anti-allergic effect, they can have several side effects in prolong use. Cedrol is the main bioactive compound of Cedrus atlantica with anti-tumor, anti-oxidative, and platelet-activating factor inhibiting properties. METHODS: In this study, the preparation and anti-anaphylactic effect of ce

New Avenues and Major Achievements in Phytocompounds Research for Glioblastoma Therapy.

Phytocompounds have been evaluated for their anti-glioblastoma actions for decades, with promising results from preclinical studies but only limited translation into clinics. Indeed, by targeting multiple signaling pathways deregulated in cancer, they often show high efficacy in the in vitro studies, but their poor bioavailability, low tumor accumulation, and rapid clearance compromise their efficacy in vivo. Here, we present the new avenues in phytocompound research for the improvement of glioblastoma therapy, including the ways to enhance the response to temozolomide using phytochemicals, th
