The efficacy of cefaclor vs amoxicillin on recovery after tonsillectomy in children.

Tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy continues to be one of the most commonly performed operations in the pediatric age group. The morbidity from tonsillectomy can be severe and includes throat and ear pain, fever, lethargy, and poor oral intake. A previous study at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (Pa) demonstrated the efficacy of amoxicillin therapy in minimizing some of these postoperative symptoms. However, some children continue to have a prolonged recovery even while receiving this antibiotic regimen. Because of these children and the high incidence of Staphylococcus found in tonsillar

Preparation, molecular docking, and biological evaluation of radioiodinated cefaclor for inflammation detection.

BACKGROUND: Inflammation serves as a natural defense mechanism; however, its persistence can lead to chronic diseases with serious clinical consequences. Early detection of inflammation is therefore critical to slowing disease progression and improving therapeutic outcomes. METHODS: In this study, cefaclor (Cefa) was successfully radiolabeled with iodine-131 via electrophilic substitution to facilitate the detection of infected and inflamed muscles in mouse models. The labeling reaction was carried out with 100 µg of Cefa and 100 µg of iodogen, using glass frits as the oxidizing system at pH 7

Decomposition and mineralization of cefaclor by ionizing radiation: kinetics and effects of the radical scavengers.

There has been recent growing interest in the presence of antibiotics in different environmental sectors. One considerable concern is the potential development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the environment, even at low concentrations. Cefaclor, one of the beta-lactam antibiotics, is widely used as an antibiotic. Kinetic studies were conducted to evaluate the decomposition and mineralization of cefaclor using gamma radiation. Cefaclor, 30 mg/l, was completely degraded with 1,000 Gy of gamma radiation. At a concentration of 30 mg/l, the removal efficiency, represented by the G-value, decre

Clinical and bacteriological evaluation of cefaclor and tetracycline in acute episodes of bacterial bronchitis.

This report describes a single-blind, comparative evaluation of cefaclor and tetracycline therapy for acute episodes of bacterial bronchitis due to Hemophilus influenzae or Streptococcus pneumoniae. One therapeutic failure occurred in the 25 patients receiving cefaclor, and four occurred in the 26 patients receiving tetracycline. The latter failures were due to tetracycline-resistant organisms. Sputum cultures yielded 39 isolates of S pneumoniae and 11 of H influenzae. None of the isolates were resistant to cefaclor. In contrast, the incidence of resistance to tetracycline was 38% (18 of 48 is

Clinical and laboratory studies with cefaclor: efficacy in skin and soft tissue infections.

Clinically relevant, recent isolates of common Gram-positive pathogens were examined for their in vitro susceptibility to cefaclor. Group A streptococci and pneumococci were uniformly sensitive (MICs 0.06--0.12 micrograms/ml) to both cefaclor and cephalothin. Cefaclor was 5--10-fold less active than cephalothin against group B streptococci. S. aureus strains were uniformly more susceptible to cephalothin than to cefaclor, but among isolates from children, almost all were sensitive to the latter drug. In clinical studies of patients with skin and soft tissue infections, cefaclor proved effectiv

Intestinal mucosal permeability of children with cefaclor-associated serum sickness-like reactions.

Although the serum sickness-like reaction (SSLR) in children after the administration of cefaclor has long been recognized, the exact mechanism of cefaclor-associated SSLR remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the association between intestinal mucosal permeability and cefaclor-associated SSLR in children. A total of 82 pediatric patients with upper respiratory tract infection following the cefaclor therapy was divided into cefaclor-associated SSLR positive group and negative group based on the presence or absence of SSLR after taking cefaclor, and 30 healthy volunteers served as con

Comparative in-vitro activity of cefaclor against urinary tract isolates of Escherichia coli.

Insusceptibility levels of cefaclor and other commonly prescribed antibiotics were determined for 489 consecutive hospital and community-associated urinary tract isolates of Escherichia coli from the Nottingham area of the UK. Significant resistance (MIC of > or = 8 mg/L) to cefaclor was found to be uncommon in the UK, with insusceptibility percentages as low as 1.5% and 1.4% amongst hospital and community isolates, respectively. When compared with other antimicrobials used commonly for treating urinary tract infection, only ciprofloxacin showed greater activity, though cefaclor showed signifi

Onset of Hemophilus influenzae type-b meningitis during cefaclor therapy for preseptal cellulitis.

Second generation cephalosporins are frequently used for the treatment of bacteremic Hemophilus influenzae type b infections. "Breakthrough" meningitis during cefamandole therapy has documented the need for adequate cerebrospinal fluid penetration by these antibiotics if they are to be used in the therapy of Hemophilus infections. A child with H. influenzae type b preseptal cellulitis is reported who initially responded to treatment with intravenous cefuroxime and oral cefaclor. However, while still receiving cefaclor, the child was readmitted with H. influenzae meningitis. Microtiter broth di
