Identification of cellulose fibers in oral biopsies.

Oral biopsies comprising five periapical cysts, three cases of exuberant granulation tissue in extraction sockets and one case of a mandibular radiopaque structure, all displaying material consistent with cellulose fibers on routine histologic examination, were subjected to histochemical, polarization, fluorescence and scanning electron microscopical, energy dispersive X-ray and chemical investigations. Routine screening of periapical lesions with polarization microscopy and identification of possible cellulose fibers with Calcofluor White is advocated. Further, attention is drawn to endodonti

Interaction of Carboxyalkylated Cellulose Nanocrystals and Antibiotics.

Although antibiotics are beneficial for treating infections, their release into the environment has raised global concerns. In this work, the interactions of cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) derivatives with sulfamethoxazole (SMX), ciprofloxacin (CIP), and doxycycline (DOX) antibiotics were studied fundamentally. CNC was carboxyalkylated to bear different carbon chain lengths but similar negative charges on its surface. The highest level of adsorption of DOX on the carboxypantadecanated CNC (i.e., carboxyalkylated CNC with more carbon spacer, PCNC) occurred at pH 6.0, which was due to the electrost

Pyrolytic sugars from cellulosic biomass.

Depolymerization of cellulose offers the prospect of inexpensive sugars from biomass. Breaking the glycosidic bonds of cellulose to liberate glucose has usually been pursued by acid or enzymatic hydrolysis although a purely thermal depolymerization route to sugars is also possible. Fast pyrolysis of pure cellulose yields primarily the anhydrosugar levoglucosan (LG) whereas the presence of naturally occurring alkali and alkaline earth metals (AAEMs) in biomass strongly catalyzes ring-breaking reactions that favor formation of light oxygenates. Here, we show a method of significantly increasing

Preparation and application of cellulose triacetate microspheres.

Cellulose triacetate was prepared via reacting of a mixture of acetic anhydride and acetic acid containing sulfuric acid as catalyst with ramie fiber obtained from a biomass of ramie. The cellulose triacetate with a degree of substitution (DS) 2.93 of the ramie fiber was obtained. The honeycomb-like cellulose triacetate microspheres with an average diameter of 14 microm were made from the cellulose triacetate solution. The optimum conditions for preparing the microspheres were determined as cellulose triacetate/dichloromethane ratio 1:7 (w/w), and 0.75% sodium dodecylsulfonate. The cellulose t

Versatile Room-Temperature Phosphorescent Materials from Cellulose.

Addressing the imperative of sustainable development, this study demonstrates an eco-friendly luminescent platform integrating high-efficiency room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) with programmable humidity responsivity. Leveraging carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as a matrix, a covalent cross-linked network was constructed through reaction with epichlorohydrin. 4,4',4″-Nitrilotribenzoic acid (NTA) was introduced and confined within the cross-linked network, successfully yielding a multifunctional RTP material. This hierarchical architecture establishes a synergistic rigidification mechanism vi

Spin coated cellulose nanocrystal/silver nanoparticle films.

In this study, thin films of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and silver nanoparticles (Ag) were assembled on different substrates by spin coating. The effect of substrates, deposition parameters, and nanocrystal modification on the topographical and hydrophilic properties of the obtained layers was investigated. Dilute concentrations of pristine cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and surfactant modified crystals (s-CNC) were used in order to evaluate the effect of modification and concentration on the uniformity of the spin coated cellulose/silver layers. Radiation-induced high-temperature conversion of cellulose.

Thermal decomposition of cellulose can be upgraded by means of an electron-beam irradiation to produce valuable organic products via chain mechanisms. The samples being irradiated decompose effectively at temperatures below the threshold of pyrolysis inception. Cellulose decomposition resembles local "explosion" of the glucopyranose unit when fast elimination of carbon dioxide and water precede formation of residual carbonyl or carboxyl compounds. The dry distillation being performed during an irradiation gives a liquid condensate where furfural and its derivatives are dominant components. Exc

Granuloma caused by oxidized cellulose following craniotomy.

Three cases are reported in which large granulomas developed 13 to 21 months respectively after removal of intracranial meningiomas (2 cases) and after operation for an anterior communicating artery aneurysm. In each of the cases oxidized cellulose had been used and left in place for haemostasis. All of the granulomas acted as space-occupying lesions. They could be removed operatively with good result. All of them consisted of mononuclear phagocytic and multi-nuclear giant cells and contained remnants of oxidized cellulose. No comparable cases have been reported in the literature. Diagnosis, t

Effect of Acetylation of Two Cellulose Nanocrystal Polymorphs on Processibility and Physical Properties of Polylactide/Cellulose Nanocrystal Composite Film.

Polylactide (PLA) has become a popular alternative for petroleum-based plastics to reduce environmental pollution. The broader application of PLA is hampered by its brittle nature and incompatibility with the reinforcement phase. The aim of our work was to improve the ductility and compatibility of PLA composite film and investigate the mechanism by which nanocellulose enhances PLA polymer. Here, we present a robust PLA/nanocellulose hybrid film. Two different allomorphic cellulose nanocrystals (CNC-I and CNC-III) and their acetylated products (ACNC-I and ACNC-III) were used to realize better

Synthesis and bactericide activity of nanofiltration composite membranes - Cellulose acetate/silver nanoparticles and cellulose acetate/silver ion exchanged zeolites.

The present work addresses the synthesis of nanofiltration composite membranes with bactericide properties. The cellulose acetate based membranes with polyvinylpyrrolidone coated silver nanoparticles, silver ion-exchanged β-zeolite and β-zeolite are casted by the phase inversion technique and subjected to an annealing post-treatment. They are characterized in terms of the nanofiltration permeation performance and antibacterial properties. The incorporation of silver nanoparticles produces a threefold increase in the membrane hydraulic permeability when compared to the silver-free membranes and
