Tough, conductive hydrogels based on gelatin and oxidized sodium carboxymethyl cellulose as flexible sensors.

Natural polymer-based hydrogels have been wildly used in electronic skin, health monitoring and human motion sensing. However, the construction of hydrogel with excellent mechanical strength and electrical conductivity totally using natural polymers still faces many challenges. In this paper, gelatin and oxidized sodium carboxymethylcellulose were used to synthesize a double-network hydrogel through the dynamic Schiff base bonds. Then, the mechanical strength of the hydrogel was further enhanced by immersing it in an ammonium sulfate solution based on the Hofmeister effect between gelatin and

Development and preclinical investigation of vancomycin loaded oxidized cellulose dressing for management of wounds.

Wounds are vulnerable to microbial infiltration, leading to severe infections; to address this, we developed an antimicrobial wound dressing with prolonged residence time and controlled drug release. The study focused on the synthesis and characterization of oxidized cellulose, which was subsequently used to develop a vancomycin-loaded oxidized cellulose‑sodium alginate wound dressing crosslinked with calcium chloride. The optimized film showed a folding endurance of 257.33 ± 1.52, a swelling index of 133.40 ± 1.32%, and tensile strength of 0.66 ± 0.09 N/mm2. Its porosity of 66.67 ± 1.23% and

Stabilization of Loose Dentition During Anesthesia Using Oxidized Regenerated Cellulose Surgicel: A Case Report.

Dental injury is a recognized complication of airway management during general anesthesia. We report the case of a 50-year-old woman undergoing elective hysterectomy under general anesthesia with endotracheal intubation, in whom a loose upper incisor with active gingival bleeding was identified after airway management. Oxidized regenerated cellulose (ORC) Surgicel, placed between the tooth and gingiva, achieved hemostasis and stabilization. The material was removed during emergence to permit direct visualization of tooth stability and to avoid unintended retention within the oral cavity. This

Growth of spiral ganglion neurons induced by graphene oxide/oxidized bacterial cellulose composite hydrogel.

The damage or degeneration of spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) can impair the auditory signals transduction from hair cells to the central auditory system, and cause significant hearing loss. Herein, a new form of bioactive hydrogel incorporating topological graphene oxide (GO) and TEMPO-oxidized bacterial cellulose (GO/TOBC hydrogel) was developed to provide a favorable microenvironment for SGN neurite outgrowth. As the network structure of lamellar interspersed fiber cross-linked by GO/TOBC hydrogels well simulated the structure and morphology of ECM, with the controllable hydrophilic property

TEMPO-oxidized cellulose hydrogel as a high-capacity and reusable heavy metal ion adsorbent.

Nitroxy radical catalyzed oxidation with hypochlorite/bromide (TEMPO-mediated oxidation) was performed on a cellulose hydrogel prepared using LiOH/urea solvent. TEMPO oxidation successfully introduced carboxyl groups onto the surface of the cellulose hydrogel with retention of the gel structure and its nanoporous property. The equilibrium measurement of Cu(2+) adsorption showed favorable interaction with Cu(2+) and high maximum adsorption capacity. In addition, over 98% of the adsorbed Cu(2+) was recovered using acid treatment, and the subsequent washing allowed the TEMPO-oxidized gels to be u

Simple intraoperative technique for minor dural gap repair using fibrin glue and oxidized cellulose.

INTRODUCTION: Several methods have been proposed to achieve a watertight dural closure, including the use of fibrin sealant to reinforce sutures. We propose a fast technique using oxidized cellulose and fibrin glue to achieve firm and watertight closure of minor dural defects in supratentorial cranial surgery. TECHNICAL NOTE: Oxidized cellulose is cut to the shape of the dural defect and applied as an onlay graft. Fibrin sealant is then applied over the cellulose and the dural margins defect. The web conformation of oxidized cellulose avoids adhesion of fibrin glue to the underlying cortical

Persistent oxidized regenerated cellulose mimicking locoregional recurrence after thyroidectomy: diagnostic challenges and associated risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Oxidized regenerated cellulose (ORC) is widely used as a local hemostatic agent during thyroid surgery. Although manufacturers report complete absorption within 7-14 days, persistent ORC is frequently observed in postoperative follow-up, often mimicking residual or recurrent thyroid tissue. This misinterpretation can result in unnecessary investigations or biopsies. The present study aimed (1) to define the ultrasonographic features of persistent ORC to prevent misleading radiological interpretations and (2) to identify the risk factors associated with delayed ORC resorption. The importance of coordination in preventing overdiagnosis: a retrospective analysis of unabsorbed oxidized regenerated cellulose.

BACKGROUND: Oxidized regenerated cellulose (ORC) is commonly used to control small intraoperative bleedings in lung cancer surgery. However, difficulties in its absorption may lead to complications that can mimic malignancy recurrence in the affected areas, and may require further examination. METHODS: Between 2015 and 2022, patients who underwent malignant tumour resection and lymph node dissection and were subsequently evaluated for suspected lymph node recurrence and underwent EBUS-guided needle biopsy were included in the study. Pathology reports of these patients showed an ORC-related fo

Use of Oxidized Regenerated Cellulose/Collagen Matrix in Chronic Diabetic Foot Ulcers: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: Diabetic wounds that do not heal completely usually exhibit inflammatory markers, increased protease activity, and reduced levels of growth factors and cell count. A systematic review was performed to determine whether there is enough evidence to support the use of an oxidized regenerated cellulose/collagen matrix (ORC+C) to treat diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs). METHODS: Study authors analyzed randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on ORC+C dressings for the treatment of DFUs. A literature search was conducted for all available reports of relevant studies published in journals indexed in

Use of oxidized regenerated cellulose to achieve hemostasis during laparoscopic cholecystectomy: a retrospective cohort analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the first-choice treatment for symptomatic cholelithiasis. Though generally safe, this procedure is not without complications, with bleeding the most frequent cause of conversion to open cholecystectomy. Oxidized regenerated cellulose (ORC) added to conventional hemostatic strategies, is widely used to control bleeding during surgery despite limited evidence supporting its use. This retrospective study analyzed patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy in an Italian center over a 16-month period, between October 2014 and February 2016, who expe

An alternative dressing material for the split-thickness skin graft donor site: oxidized regenerated cellulose.

The split-thickness skin graft (STSG) donor sites have been treated with various and plenty of dressing techniques and materials. An ideal STSG donor site dressing should have antibacterial, hemostatic, and promoting epidermal healing properties. We have performed a prospective study to evaluate the effect of the oxidized regenerated cellulose on STSG donor site healing. Between January 2002 and January 2005, 40 patients who were operated in any kind of reconstructive operations with STSG donor sites were included in the study. One half of the wound was covered with oxidized regenerated cellul

Pickering emulsions of thyme oil in water using oxidized cellulose nanofibers: Towards bio-based active packaging.

The antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of thyme essential oil (TEO) are useful for active food packaging, but its poor aqueous solubility restricts its applications. This work involves anionic cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) as the sole stabilizing agent for TEO-in-water emulsions, with oil concentrations ranging from 10 mL/L to 300 mL/L. A double mechanism was proposed: the adsorption of CNFs at oil/water interfaces restricted coalescence to a limited extent, while thickening (rheological stabilization) was required to avoid the buoyance of large droplets (>10 μm). Thickening effects compri
