Local disease-ecosystem-livelihood dynamics: reflections from comparative case studies in Africa.

This article explores the implications for human health of local interactions between disease, ecosystems and livelihoods. Five interdisciplinary case studies addressed zoonotic diseases in African settings: Rift Valley fever (RVF) in Kenya, human African trypanosomiasis in Zambia and Zimbabwe, Lassa fever in Sierra Leone and henipaviruses in Ghana. Each explored how ecological changes and human-ecosystem interactions affect pathogen dynamics and hence the likelihood of zoonotic spillover and transmission, and how socially differentiated peoples' interactions with ecosystems and animals affect

Are We Talking About the Same Thing? Black/African Americans' Response to the BRFSS Cognitive Decline and Caregiver Modules.

The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) is a randomized national U.S. telephone survey administered by state health departments. This study aimed to identify how Black/African Americans understand BRFSS caregiver and cognitive decline surveys and terminology to inform health messaging that centers the Black/African American experience. In focus groups, BRFSS surveys were administered to Black/African Americans (n = 30) aged ≥ 45 in Oregon. Participants were asked how they interpreted BRFSS terms 'memory loss' and 'confusion,' how these terms related to Alzheimer's and dementia,

Current knowledge on epidemiology and control of sleeping sickness.

African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness) occurs in some 200 known foci within tsetse inhabited areas in sub-saharan Africa, where an estimated 50 million people are at risk of acquiring infection. Only 25,000 new patients are reported each year but this is an underestimate. Where medical surveillance was inadequate or lacking, serious epidemics could occur and this potential risk makes the disease one of the serious health problems in sub-saharan Africa. The chronic gambiense form of sleeping sickness occurs in West and Central Africa, while the acute rhodesiense form occurs in East and Sou

Pityriasis versicolor in the Central African Republic: a randomized study of 144 cases.

The prevalence and the principal epidemiological characteristics of pityriasis versicolor have been studied in a randomized population of 870 adult individuals (418 males and 452 females) in the Central African Republic. The general clinical prevalence was 16.6%. Males were affected more often than females (20.6% vs. 12.9%). For both sexes, the maximum prevalence was in the 15 to 25-year-old age groups (23.5%). Lesions commonly occurred over the face (49.3%) and upper trunk (48.6%). Different climatic areas within the country, type of urbanization, religion and general hygiene showed no releva

Interactions between tsetse and trypanosomes with implications for the control of trypanosomiasis.

Tsetse flies (Diptera: Glossinidae) are vectors of several species of pathogenic trypanosomes in tropical Africa. Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) is a zoonosis caused by Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense in East Africa and T. b. gambiense in West and Central Africa. About 100000 new cases are reported per year, with many more probably remaining undetected. Sixty million people living in 36 countries are at risk of infection. Recently, T. b. gambiense trypanosomiasis has emerged as a major public health problem in Central Africa, especially in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola and south

Evolutionary Strategies for Body Size.

Humans show marked variation in body size around the world, both within and among populations. At present, the tallest people in the world are from the Netherlands and the Balkan countries, while the shortest populations are central African Pygmies. There are genetic, genetic plasticity, developmental, and environmental bases for size variation in Homo sapiens from the recent past and the present. Early populations of Homo species also have shown considerable size variation. Populations from the present and the past are also marked by sexual dimorphism, which, itself, shows group variation. African Programme for Onchocerciasis Control (APOC): sociological study in three foci of central Africa before the implementation of treatments with ivermectin (Mectizan).

The African Programme for Onchocerciasis Control (APOC) has put in place a study to assess the long-term impact of the community-directed treatments with ivermectin on various clinical and entomological indicators of onchocerciasis. As the results obtained would depend on community participation in the treatments, surveys were also conducted at the study sites to assess the people's knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding onchocerciasis and its treatment. This article presents the anthropological observations made before the implementation of the treatments in three sites: one in the Cent

NeuroAIDS in sub-Saharan Africa: a clinical review.

NeuroAIDS affects half of the 22 million people currently living with HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa, where cryptococcal meningitis alone is responsible for 504,000 deaths annually. A good understanding of NeuroAIDS may help improve disease-free survival in patients at risk and optimize resource utilization by caregivers. In this review, we aimed to provide a summary of major NeuroAIDS syndromes of relevance in Africa. We searched Medline for English language literature to identify relevant publications, using the search terms "NeuroAIDS" and "HIV AND nervous system." The most common NeuroAIDS

The geographic distribution of Loa loa in Africa: results of large-scale implementation of the Rapid Assessment Procedure for Loiasis (RAPLOA).

BACKGROUND: Loiasis is a major obstacle to ivermectin treatment for onchocerciasis control and lymphatic filariasis elimination in central Africa. In communities with a high level of loiasis endemicity, there is a significant risk of severe adverse reactions to ivermectin treatment. Information on the geographic distribution of loiasis in Africa is urgently needed but available information is limited. The African Programme for Onchocerciasis Control (APOC) undertook large scale mapping of loiasis in 11 potentially endemic countries using a rapid assessment procedure for loiasis (RAPLOA) that u

Etiology-specific incidence and mortality of diarrheal diseases in the African region: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Diarrheal diseases substantially affect public health impact in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), particularly in Africa, where previous studies have indicated a lack of comprehensive data. With a growing number of primary studies on enteric infections in Africa, this study aimed to estimate the incidence and mortality of diarrheal pathogens across all ages in Africa in the year 2020. We also explored different methodological assumptions to allow comparison with other approaches. METHODS: Through a systematic review and meta-analysis of data from African LMICs, we estimated

Monkeypox: Potentially another pandemic or a mere hoax?

Monkeypox is a vesicular, pustular illness caused by an orthopox virus. It has remained endemic to the Central and West African regions for the past four decades, with only a few outbreaks outside these regions. It is mainly transmitted by direct skin to skin with an infected individual who has developed pustules. Recently there have been major outbreaks in about fourteen countries of the world, and over nine hundred people have been infected. This short summary gives a review about the epidemiology, history, virulence, symptoms and prevention of Monkeypox, while addressing a major question th

Features Associated with Visible Lamina Cribrosa Pores in Individuals of African Ancestry with Glaucoma: Primary Open-Angle African Ancestry Glaucoma Genetics (POAAGG) Study.

There are scarce data regarding the rate of the occurrence of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and visible lamina cribrosa pores (LCPs) in the eyes of individuals with African ancestry; the potential impact of these features on disease burden remains unknown. We recruited subjects with POAG to the Primary Open-Angle African American Glaucoma Genetics (POAAGG) study. Through regression models, we evaluated the association between the presence of LCPs and various phenotypic features. In a multivariable analysis of 1187 glaucomatous eyes, LCPs were found to be more likely to be present in eyes

A contextual genomic perspective on physical activity and its relationship to health, well being and illness.

Physical activity (PA) is one of the most fundamental traits in the animal kingdom, has pervasive health benefits, and is genetically influenced. Using data from the Million Veteran Program, we conducted genetic analyses of leisure, work and home-time PA. For leisure, we included 189,812 individuals of European ancestry (SNP-based heritability (h2) = 0.083 ± 0.005), 27,044 of African ancestry (h2 = 0.034 ± 0.017) and 10,263 of Latin American ancestry (h2 = 0.083 ± 0.036) in a cross-ancestry meta-analysis with UK Biobank data, identifying 70 lead variants. Leisure-time PA was genetically distin
