Prolactin stimulation by intravenous labetalol is mediated inside the central nervous system.

We have previously reported that labetalol infusion increases prolactin (PRL) secretion in hypertensive patients. In an attempt to investigate the site where labetalol stimulates PRL, the drug was infused intravenously (100 mg) into healthy subjects, both under basal conditions and after pretreatment with L-dopa plus carbidopa (250 mg and 25 mg respectively every 6 h for 1 day), since this regimen has been reported to blunt the PRL responses to centrally acting stimuli. The effects of oral labetalol administration (100 and 200 mg) on PRL was also evaluated. Serum PRL concentration did not chan

Association between treatment with central nervous system stimulants and Raynaud's syndrome in children: a retrospective case-control study of rheumatology patients.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether central nervous system (CNS) stimulants used for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are associated with the development of Raynaud's syndrome (RS). METHODS: A case-control design was used for this study. All patients seen in a pediatric rheumatology practice during a 5-year period who had signs and symptoms of RS and met diagnostic criteria for RS as determined by pulse volume recording were studied as cases. Controls were randomly selected patients at the same clinic who did not have signs or symptoms of RS. They were matched to

Alpha-Melanocyte-Stimulating Hormone-Mediated Appetite Regulation in the Central Nervous System.

Understanding the complex action mechanism of appetite regulation peptides can significantly impact therapeutic options in the treatment of obesity and other metabolic diseases. Hypothalamic alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) is an anorexigenic peptide, closely related to the occurrence of obesity, playing a central role in food intake and energy expenditure. In the central nervous system, α-MSH is cleaved from proopiomelanocortin and then released into different hypothalamic regions to act on melanocortin 3/4 receptor-expressing neurons, lowering food intake, and raising energy expe

c-Fos expression in the central nervous system elicited by phrenic nerve stimulation.

Phrenic nerve afferents (PNa) have been shown to activate neurons in the spinal cord, brain stem, and forebrain regions. The c-Fos technique has been widely used as a method to identify neuronal regions activated by afferent stimulation. This technique was used to identify central neural areas activated by PNa. The right phrenic nerve of urethane-anesthetized rats was stimulated in the thorax. The spinal cord and brain were sectioned and stained for c-Fos expression. Labeled neurons were found in the dorsal horn laminae I and II of the C3-C5 spinal cord ipsilateral to the site of PNa stimulati

The Neurophysiology of Caffeine as a Central Nervous System Stimulant and the Resultant Effects on Cognitive Function.

Caffeine is one of the world's most consumed drugs. According to the Washington Post (2015), two billion cups of coffee are consumed per day worldwide. Caffeine is classified as a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant and an organic molecule called methylxanthine. Caffeine has three notable mechanisms of action on the CNS that produce a psychostimulant effect. These effects are responsible for the effect that caffeine has on cognitive function. The effects of caffeine consumption on cognitive function have been demonstrated across several studies involving humans and animals. With the immense

A role for G-CSF (granulocyte-colony stimulating factor) in the central nervous system.

Antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) are used extensively to treat multiple non-epilepsy disorders, both in neurology and psychiatry. This article provides a review of the clinical efficacy of AEDs in non-epilepsy disorders based on recently published preclinical and clinical studies, and attempts to relate this efficacy to the mechanism of action of AEDs and pathophysiological processes associated with the disorders. Some newer indications for AEDs have been established, while others are under investigation. The disorders where AEDs have been demonstrated to be of clinical importance include neurologic

Fast intraoperative detection of primary central nervous system lymphoma and differentiation from common central nervous system tumors using stimulated Raman histology and deep learning.

BACKGROUND: Accurate intraoperative diagnosis is crucial for differentiating between primary central nervous system (CNS) lymphoma (PCNSL) and other CNS entities, guiding surgical decision-making, but represents significant challenges due to overlapping histomorphological features, time constraints, and differing treatment strategies. We combined stimulated Raman histology (SRH) with deep learning to address this challenge. METHODS: We imaged unprocessed, label-free tissue samples intraoperatively using a portable Raman scattering microscope, generating virtual H&E-like images within <3 min.

Vagus nerve stimulation: a physical therapy with promising potential for central nervous system disorders.

The diseases of the central nervous system (CNS) often cause irreversible damage to the human body and have a poor prognosis, posing a significant threat to human health. They have brought enormous burdens to society and healthcare systems. However, due to the complexity of their causes and mechanisms, effective treatment methods are still lacking. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), as a physical therapy, has been utilized in the treatment of various diseases. VNS has shown promising outcomes in some CNS diseases and has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States

Stimulating the central nervous system to prevent intestinal dysfunction after traumatic brain injury.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) causes gastrointestinal dysfunction and increased intestinal permeability. Regulation of the gut barrier may involve the central nervous system. We hypothesize that vagal nerve stimulation prevents an increase in intestinal permeability after TBI. METHODS: Balb/c mice underwent a weight drop TBI. Selected mice had electrical stimulation of the cervical vagus nerve before TBI. Intestinal permeability to 4.4 kDa FITC-Dextran was measured 6 hours after injury. Ileum was harvested and intestinal tumor necrosis factor-alpha and glial fibrillary acidic prote

Tumor immunity within the central nervous system stimulated by recombinant Listeria monocytogenes vaccination.

Tumors arising within the central nervous system (CNS) present the immune system with a challenging target, given the heterogeneous nature of these neoplasms and their location within an "immunologically privileged" site. We used the lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus nucleoprotein (LCMV-NP) as a pseudotumor antigen to investigate recombinant Listeria monocytogenes as a tumor vaccine against s.c. and intracerebral challenges with a NP-expressing glioma, 9L-NP. Using Fischer 344 rats, we demonstrate that vaccination with recombinant L. monocytogenes-NP stimulates protection against s.c., but no

Treatment of patients with degenerative diseases of the central nervous system by electrical stimulation of the spinal cord.

Patients with dystonia, spinocerebellar and cerebellar ataxia and spasmodic torticollis have a reasonable chance of being significantly aided in their control of motor function and neurogenic bladder by electrical stimulation of the cervical or thoracic spinal cord. This mode of therapy has the advantages that it is not destructive of neurological tissue, effects can be varied by altering the intensity and rate of the stimulus and preliminary testing with externalization of the electrodes is predictive of the effects of chronic stimulation.

The regional distribution of the nerve-stimulating phosphopeptide (nerveside, substance B) in the central nervous system.

1. The nerve-stimulating phosphopeptide, nerveside, is present mainly in the cerebrum and brain stem, while the cerebellum contains only a trace amount of it.2. Nerveside is uniformly distributed over all parts of the cerebral cortex.3. The cerebral cortex contains the greatest concentration of nerveside. If the nerveside activity of 1 g cerebral cortex is expressed as 100 then the relative activities of the other parts of the C.N.S. are hippocampus 41, caudate nucleus 21, diencephalon (without hypothalamus) 24, midbrain 19, pons 7, medulla 12 and cerebellum 6.4.
