Apparent transmission efficiency of Culicoides sonorensis (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) for epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus serotype 2 in white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus).

Epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV) is transmitted by Culicoides biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) to numerous ruminant species and is a significant pathogen of white-tailed deer (WTD; Odocoileus virginianus). In North America, the only confirmed vector of EHDV is Culicoides sonorensis, although other Culicoides species are suspected vectors. Previous experimental infections have demonstrated Culicoides-to-WTD transmission of EHDV, but little is known about transmission efficiency. Our objective was to determine if the bite from as few as 5 EHDV-infected C. sonorensis is sufficie

Effectiveness of a permethrin-treated barrier and pour-on applications against Culicoides spp. (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) and mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) on a deer farm.

Culicoides biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) and mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) are important vectors of pathogens affecting ruminants. On deer farms, Culicoides species transmit bluetongue virus and epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus, while mosquitoes can cause chronic stress and even exsanguination. We evaluated the effectiveness of the insecticide -InsectGuard (0.5% permethrin), applied as a barrier treatment and pour-on, to reduce mosquito and biting midge landings on deer in Martin County, Florida. Deer simulators baited with carbon dioxide and fitted with sticky cards were used

Trypanosomatid detection in Culicoides biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) from leishmaniasis-endemic Songkhla Province, Southern Thailand: Microscopy and nanopore metabarcoding reveal parasite diversity.

Leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania (Mundinia) spp. has recently emerged in Southeast Asia, including Thailand. Although molecular studies have detected Leishmania DNA in Culicoides midges, complete parasite development, which proves vector competence, remains undemonstrated in field specimens. We collected 215 parous/gravid (n = 195) and blood-engorged (n = 20) female Culicoides representing at least 10 species from two leishmaniasis foci in Songkhla Province, Southern Thailand. Specimens underwent microscopic dissection, culturing in Schneider's medium, ITS1/SSU rRNA-PCR for Leishmania/trypan

Colonisation history of a vector species of veterinary interest: phylogeography of Culicoides imicola (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) in the Indian Ocean revealing low genetic structure.

Culicoides imicola (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) is the main historical vector of livestock viruses such as bluetongue virus (BTV), Epizootic Haemorrhagic Disease virus (EHDV) and African Horse Sickness virus (AHSV), in the Afrotropical region. Despite its wide distribution across Africa, the Mediterranean basin and parts of Asia, the genetic structure and colonisation history of this species in the South-West Indian Ocean (SWIO) territories remain poorly understood. The aim of this study was to investigate how passive wind-driven dispersal and recent animal movements associated with human coloni

Preferred landing sites of Culicoides species (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) on a horse in Israel and its relevance to summer seasonal recurrent dermatitis (sweet itch).

Six hundred and twenty culicoides of five species were collected from a bait horse at Kannot, Israel, between April and September 1986. Seventy-two per cent of the midges were collected from the belly and 27 per cent from the dorsal aspect of the body, ie, the sweet itch summer seasonal recurrent dermatitis (SSRD) zone. Midges were active mainly from half an hour prior to half an hour after sunset. Only Culicoides puncticollis, C imicola and C schultzei group were collected in considerable numbers. While C imicola was present continuously throughout the season, the appearance of the two other

First record of mermithid parasitism in adult biting midges, Culicoides huffi (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae), collected from Southern Thailand, with ultrastructural and molecular characterization.

BACKGROUND: Culicoides biting midges are known vectors of several pathogens, including arboviruses, protozoa, and filarial worms. Additionally, mermithid nematodes have been found to parasitize Culicoides midges, causing pathogenic effects that reduce host fitness and often lead to death. Consequently, mermithids have potential as biocontrol agents to reduce midge populations. However, the biology of these entomopathogenic nematodes infecting Culicoides in Thailand remains unknown. METHODS: As part of the leishmaniasis surveillance program in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, Southern Thailand, w

Culicoides biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) feeding on donkeys in the United Kingdom, with reference to the risk of transmission and persistence of African horse sickness virus.

African horse sickness virus (AHSV: Sedoreoviridae; Orbivirus) causes a severe and often fatal disease in horses (African horse sickness: AHS) and is transmitted almost exclusively by Culicoides biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae). In recent years, unprecedented outbreaks of AHSV have occurred in new geographical foci in Thailand and other related Culicoides-borne viruses continue to emerge unexpectedly, causing disease outbreaks in northern Europe. This study investigated Culicoides abundance and diversity at a donkey (Equus asinus) sanctuary in southern England. The incidence and severi

Winter activity and virus infection of Culicoides biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) in German livestock housing before and during the 2024 BTV-3 outbreak.

BACKGROUND: Despite its importance for Culicoides-borne disease risk assessment, the winter activity of species of this biting midge genus remains poorly characterized. Moreover, information on virus circulation in winter-active Culicoides vectors, both under endemic conditions and during outbreaks, is almost non-existent. METHODS: UV-light traps to collect Culicoides biting midges were operated once a week for 24 h in cattle, sheep, goat and horse stables at 12 to 55 locations during four consecutive winter periods (November 1 to March 31, 2021 to 2025) throughout Germany. Molecular Detection of Leishmania (L.) mexicana (Kinetoplastida: Trypanostomatidae) DNA in Culicoides furens (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) from an Area with Autochthonous Canine Leishmaniasis in Northwestern Mexico.

PURPOSE: Mexico is considered endemic for Leishmania; recent reports indicate autochthonous human and canine leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania mexicana in Sinaloa state. Lutzomyia sand fly are the primary vector of the parasite, although no records of phlebotomine vectors of Leishmania exist from Sinaloa. Other hematophagous dipterans, like Culicoides, could represent possible vectors of Leishmania in absence of phlebotomines. The known distribution of Culicoides includes the southern portion of Sinaloa state, in northwestern Mexico, with records of Culicoides furens. However, no studies have

Molecular identification and characterization of Wolbachia and Cardinium with co-occurrence of Leishmania spp. in Culicoides biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) from leishmaniasis-affected areas of Thailand.

Biting midges of the genus Culicoides have been identified as potential vectors for the transmission of species of the Leishmania subgenus Mundinia, the causative agents of autochthonous leishmaniasis in Thailand. Vector competence may be potentially affected by bacterial endosymbionts; however, there is no known correlation between these endosymbionts and Leishmania parasites in Culicoides biting midges. In this study, we aimed to explore the prevalence and association of bacterial endosymbionts and the detection of Leishmania DNA in Culicoides spp. Female midges were captured at five samplin

A new look at the feeding behaviour of haematophagous Diptera: the biting habits of Leptoconops (Megaconops) floridensis Wirth (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae)FIRST REVIEW ROUND - REVIEWERS' COMMENTSREVIEWERS' COMMENTS.

BACKGROUND: Understanding ecological relationships among species and their pathogens is essential for assessing disease dynamics and associated risks to human, animal, and environmental health. Some haematophagous ceratopogonid species feed on birds and may act as vectors for haemoparasites, viruses, and bacteria. However, no reports have documented these insects feeding within the internal organs of birds. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to describe the first recorded occurrence of ceratopogonids feeding within the respiratory system of debilitated kelp gulls and cormorants. METHODS: As part of

First record of bacterial communities within defecated contents and gut of post-defecated females of Culicoides peregrinus Kieffer and Culicoides oxystoma Kieffer (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae), vectors of bluetongue virus.

Defecation is one of the posterior-station transmission routes for pathogens in haematophagous insects. Culicoides peregrinus Kieffer and Culicoides oxystoma Kieffer (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) are the proven vectors of many arboviruses, most importantly bluetongue virus, protozoa, and filarial nematodes of livestock. Duration of blood feeding and defecation vary according to species. Culicoides females take blood from their hosts to acquire additional protein to develop their eggs. This study investigates the bacterial communities in defecated contents and gut of the field-collected post-defec

First Evidence of Co-Circulation of Emerging Leishmania martiniquensis, Leishmania orientalis, and Crithidia sp. in Culicoides Biting Midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae), the Putative Vectors for Autochthonous Transmission in Southern Thailand.

Since 1996, autochthonous cases of emerging leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania (Mundinia) martiniquensis and Leishmania (Mundinia) orientalis have been more frequently reported, especially in the northern and southern parts of Thailand. However, the accurate identification of their natural vectors and reservoirs remains unconfirmed. Previous studies have suggested that these emerging parasites might be transmitted by other non-phlebotomine vectors. Herein, we speculated that Culicoides biting midges might act as the competent vectors responsible for autochthonous leishmaniasis in southern Thai

SAND-FLY PHLEBOTOMUS PAPATASI (PHLEBOTOMINAE): A GENERAL REVIEW WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO ZOONOTIC CUTANEOUS LEISHMANIASIS IN EGYPT.

Leishmania are digenetic protozoa which inhabit two hosts, the sandfly where they grow as promastigotes in the gut, and the mammalian macrophage where they grow as amastigotes. Sandfly (or sand fly) is a colloquial name for any species or genus of flying, biting, blood-sucking Dipteran encountered in sandy areas. In the United States, sandfly may refer to certain horse flies that are also known as "greenheads" (family Tabanidae), or to members of the family Ceratopogonidae, also known in Florida and elsewhere as a sand gnat, sandflea, no-see-um (no-see-em, noseeum), granny nipper, chitra, punk

Pulmonary localization of Mansonella perstans in a 16 months-old male patient in a tertiary care hospital in Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo.

INTRODUCTION: Mansonella perstans is a human filarial parasite transmitted by biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) belonging to the genus Culicoides and it is widely spread in sub-Saharan Africa. While most cases are asymptomatic, mansonelliasis can be associated with angioedema, arthralgia, swellings, pain in the scrotum or in serous cavities such as the pleura, the peritoneum, the pericardium, etc. Mansonelliasis can be really hard to treat, but it has been shown that an intensive treatment using albendazole can clear the parasite. CASE REPORT: Here we describe a case of a 16 months-old
