Serologic responses to Mycobacterium leprae-specific phenolic glycolipid-I antigen in sooty mangabey monkeys with experimental leprosy.

Four pairs of sooty mangabey monkeys (Cercocebus atys) were inoculated with serial, 10-fold dilutions of Mycobacterium leprae. The highest-dose pair received 4.8 X 10(10) M. leprae. Serum samples were obtained and clinical signs of leprosy were recorded at intervals of 35 months. Longitudinal serum samples were assayed by an ELISA method for the presence of IgG and IgM antibodies to the M. Leprae-specific phenolic glycolipid-I (PGL-I) antigen. In general, the onset of disease symptoms paralleled the number of M. leprae inoculated, but the ultimate course of disease depended upon individual ani

A brief history of the discovery of natural simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) infections in captive sooty mangabey monkeys.

Experimental leprosy studies using Mycobacterium leprae inoculum isolated from a sooty mangabey monkey (SMM) resulted in the accidental discovery that SMM's asymptomatically carry simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) that is pathogenic in macaques. We showed that the SMM virus, SIVDelta, was antigenically related to SIVmac, which had been identified in macaques, and to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Similar asymptomatic natural SIV infections had been reported in African green monkeys (AGM). Our results together with observations of others led us to propose that both SIVmac and SIVDelt

Onchocerca volvulus: parasitologic and serologic responses in experimentally infected chimpanzees and mangabey monkeys.

Six chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) and six mangabey monkeys (Cercocebus atys) were inoculated with Onchocerca volvulus third-stage larvae (L3) of West African origin. Two chimpanzees each received 200, 300, or 400 L3, while three mangabeys each received either 50 or 250 L3. All six chimpanzees became microfilaria positive between 11 and 25 months postinoculation (PI), while two of the six mangabeys were skin-snip positive at 24 and 37 months PI, respectively. All chimpanzees developed antibodies to two native antigens of 14 and 22 kDa and to the recombinant antigens OV16, OC3.6, and OC9.3. Mark

Tropical rainforest flies carrying pathogens form stable associations with social nonhuman primates.

Living in groups provides benefits but also incurs costs such as attracting disease vectors. For example, synanthropic flies associate with human settlements, and higher fly densities increase pathogen transmission. We investigated whether such associations also exist in highly mobile nonhuman primate (NHP) Groups. We studied flies in a group of wild sooty mangabeys (Cercocebus atys atys) and three communities of wild chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes verus) in Taï National Park, Côte d'Ivoire. We observed markedly higher fly densities within both mangabey and chimpanzee groups. Using a mark-recapt

Diversity and prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites in seven non-human primates of the Taï National Park, Côte d'Ivoire.

Parasites and infectious diseases are well-known threats to primate populations. The main objective of this study was to provide baseline data on fecal parasites in the cercopithecid monkeys inhabiting Côte d'Ivoire's Taï National Park. Seven of eight cercopithecid species present in the park were sampled: Cercopithecus diana, Cercopithecus campbelli, Cercopithecus petaurista, Procolobus badius, Procolobus verus, Colobus polykomos, and Cercocebus atys. We collected 3142 monkey stool samples between November 2009 and December 2010. Stool samples were processed by direct wet mount examination, f

Immunity in natural SIV infections.

In stark contrast to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected individuals who, if left untreated, almost invariably progress to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), natural hosts for the simian immunodeficiency viruses (SIV) remain asymptomatic throughout the course of infection. This observation represents one of the main unresolved puzzles of AIDS research, particularly if one considers that natural SIV infections are characterized by chronically high levels of viraemia as well as intrinsic virus cytopathicity comparable with that of HIV. In this review, I discuss the basic immunolo

Reverse Chemical Ecology Suggests Putative Primate Pheromones.

Pheromonal communication is widespread among living organisms, but in apes and particularly in humans there is currently no strong evidence for such phenomenon. Among primates, lemurs use pheromones to communicate within members of the same species, whereas in some monkeys such capabilities seem to be lost. Chemical communication in humans appears to be impaired by the lack or malfunctioning of biochemical tools and anatomical structures mediating detection of pheromones. Here, we report on a pheromone-carrier protein (SAL) adopting a "reverse chemical ecology" approach to get insights on the

Public health significance of zoonotic bacterial pathogens from bushmeat sold in urban markets of Gabon, Central Africa.

Wild animal meat represents an important source of protein for many people in central Africa. Also known as bushmeat, this meat commodity is derived from wild animals hunted under uncontrolled conditions, transported to distant markets under rudimentary or no hygienic methods, and often eviscerated >24 hr after death. Considering the plausible role of wildlife as a reservoir for bacterial zoonotic pathogens, bushmeat may be an important public health risk in Central Africa. This cross-sectional survey served to evaluate the presence of Campylobacter, Salmonella, and Shigella in the muscle tiss

Ontogenetic bases of canine dimorphism in anthropoid primates.

This study tests hypotheses regarding the ontogeny of canine tooth size dimorphism in five anthropoid primate species (Saguinus fuscicollis, Macaca mulatta, Cercocebus atys, Papio hamadryas, and Mandrillus sphinx). Canine measurements and chronological age data are analyzed to determine if bimaturism, a sex difference in the age at which eruption ceases, accounts for canine tooth sexual dimorphism. Canine height measurements are evaluated through a variety of regression techniques. Results show a lack of sexual dimorphism in Saguinus. While size dimorphism is absent in the deciduous teeth of a

An outbreak of infection by Yersinia pseudotuberculosis in nonhuman primates.

Between October 1970 and June 1971, at the National Center for Primate Biology, Yersinia pseudotuberculosis of serotypes I-B and III was isolated from 9 monkeys (one during life and 8 at necropsy) of the following species: Macaca cynomolgus, Macaca nemestrina, Macaca radiata and Cercocebus fulliginosus. All these animals had characteristic gastrointestinal lesions consisting of superficial erosions or ulcerations with masses of gram-negative coccobacilli and an acute inflammatory exudate. Involvement of mesenteric nodes, livers and spleens by similar lesions was common. A more granulomatous re

Geographically structured genomic diversity of non-human primate-infecting Treponema pallidum subsp. pertenue.

Many non-human primate species in sub-Saharan Africa are infected with Treponema pallidum subsp. pertenue, the bacterium causing yaws in humans. In humans, yaws is often characterized by lesions of the extremities and face, while T. pallidum subsp. pallidum causes venereal syphilis and is typically characterized by primary lesions on the genital, anal or oral mucosae. It remains unclear whether other T. pallidum subspecies found in humans also occur in non-human primates and how the genomic diversity of non-human primate T. pallidum subsp. pertenue lineages is distributed across hosts and spac

Fatal monkeypox in wild-living sooty mangabey, Côte d'Ivoire, 2012.

We isolated a monkeypox virus from a wild-living monkey, a sooty mangabey, found dead in Taï National Park, Côte d'Ivoire, in March 2012. The whole-genome sequence obtained from this isolate and directly from clinical specimens showed its close relationship to monkeypox viruses from Western Africa.

Urogenital Lesions in Nonhuman Primates at 2 National Primate Research Centers.

Given their genetic and anatomic similarities to humans, nonhuman primates (NHPs) may serve as animal models for urogenital diseases of humans. The purpose of this study was to examine the frequency of spontaneous urogenital lesions occurring over a 30-year period at the Yerkes and Southwest National Primate Research Centers and to compare and contrast lesions occurring in Old World versus New World primates. Lesions occurring in the chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes), baboon (Papio spp.), rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta), cynomolgus macaque (Macaca fascicularis), pig-tailed macaque (Macaca nemestrin

Virally induced CD4+ T cell depletion is not sufficient to induce AIDS in a natural host.

Peripheral blood CD4+ T cell counts are a key measure for assessing disease progression and need for antiretroviral therapy in HIV-infected patients. More recently, studies have demonstrated a dramatic depletion of mucosal CD4+ T cells during acute infection that is maintained during chronic pathogenic HIV as well as SIV infection. A different clinical disease course is observed during the infection of natural hosts of SIV infection, such as sooty mangabeys (Cercocebus atys), which typically do not progress to AIDS. Previous studies have determined that SIV+ mangabeys generally maintain health

Mycobacterium leprae and Mycobacterium lepraemurium infections in domestic and wild animals.

Mycobacterium leprae, the aetiological agent of leprosy in humans, gives rise to a chronic granulomatous disease that affects primarily the skin and peripheral nerves, and secondarily some internal organs such as the testis and the eye; viscera are seldom involved. Depending on host resistance, leprosy may present as a benign disease (tuberculoid leprosy) or as a malignant disease (lepromatous leprosy), with a spectrum of intermediate stages appearing between the two. Immunity against leprosy depends on the cell-mediated immunity of the host, and this is severely compromised in the malignant (

APOBEC3G polymorphism as a selective barrier to cross-species transmission and emergence of pathogenic SIV and AIDS in a primate host.

Cellular restriction factors, which render cells intrinsically resistant to viruses, potentially impose genetic barriers to cross-species transmission and emergence of viral pathogens in nature. One such factor is APOBEC3G. To overcome APOBEC3G-mediated restriction, many lentiviruses encode Vif, a protein that targets APOBEC3G for degradation. As with many restriction factor genes, primate APOBEC3G displays strong signatures of positive selection. This is interpreted as evidence that the primate APOBEC3G locus reflects a long-term evolutionary "arms-race" between retroviruses and their primate

Identification of a new HIV-2 subtype based on phylogenetic analysis of full-length genomic sequence.

Human immunodeficiency virus type 2 (HIV-2) and simian immunodeficiency virus from sooty mangabey (SIV(SM) form one of the six primate lentivirus lineages. The close phylogenetic relationship and geographic coincidence indicate that HIV-2 originated from cross-species transmission of SIV(SM) to humans. HIV-2 exhibits considerable genetic diversity, with subtypes A-F identified. Previously, we reported the partial gag and env sequences of an unusual HIV-2 isolate, Abt96. Abt96 was collected in Ivory Coast from an asymptomatic blood donor. Here we describe the near full-length genomic sequence o

Serological Survey in African Nonhuman Primate Species in Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of the Congo Reveals Low Overall Seroprevalence to Mpox Virus.

BACKGROUND: The mpox outbreak in August 2024 in central Africa, together with the mpox pandemic in 2022 associated with the emergence of new viral lineages in urban areas, highlighted that this historically neglected zoonotic tropical disease caused by mpox virus (MPXV) is of public health concern. The majority of mpox infections are of zoonotic origin, but knowledge on the animal reservoir of MPXV is still extremely limited. METHODS: Nonhuman primate (NHP) samples (n = 1571) from 29 different species, collected across Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), were tested for t

Nonpathogenic SIV Infection in Sooty Mangabeys Is Characterized by a Lack of Activation and Expansion of Monocytes.

INTRODUCTION: Natural hosts of simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV), including sooty mangabeys (SMs), maintain high viremia without progressing to AIDS and AIDS-associated histopathogenesis. The mechanisms underlying this protection and lack of pathogenesis remain incompletely understood, particularly in relation to monocyte/macrophage activation. METHODS: Plasma soluble CD163 (sCD163), monocyte CD163 expression, and monocyte subset phenotypes were quantified in uninfected and naturally SIV-infected SMs and compared with uninfected and SIV-infected rhesus macaques (RMs).
