[Vascular anomalies of the cerebellopontine angle].

Vascular anomalies of the cerebellopontine angle are rare compared to tumors in this area. Irritation of the trigeminal, facial, or vestibulocochlear nerve may cause trigeminal neuralgia, hemifacial spasm and vertigo, or tinnitus accordingly. Vessel loops in the cerebellopontine cisterns may cause compression at the root entry or exit zone of the cranial nerves V, VII, and VIII, a phenomenon which is called "vascular loop syndrome." Megadolichobasilar artery and aneurysms of the vertebrobasilar system can also lead to dislocation and compression of the cranial nerves and brain stem. Three-dime

[Endoscopic surgery of the cerebellopontine angle].

Twenty-four patients with various cerebellopontine angle (CPA) disorders including hemifacial spasm (11 cases), trigeminal neuralgia (9 cases), glossopharyngeal neuralgia (2 cases) incapacitating vertigo and acoustic neuroma (one case each), were treated by endoscopic surgery, via the retrosigmoid approach. Because of the distal light and panoramic view, the endoscope provides an excellent view inside the CPA, allows clear identification of the vascular and nervous components, and is especially helpful in cases of trigeminal neuralgia and hemifacial spasm to find the location of cross-conflict

Rare tumours of the cerebellopontine angle.

The vast majority of cerebellopontine angle (CPA) tumours are acoustic neuromas. However, in our series of 305 CPA tumours, one in five was another pathological lesion. Of the non-acoustic tumours, the majority were meningiomas, primary cholesteatomas and glomus jugulare tumours. A variety of rarely seen but fascinating pathologies were also treated. A study of these non-acoustic tumours has been carried out, looking at their relative incidence, histology and clinical features, as well as the radiological features that make them unusual and help to distinguish them from acoustic neuromas (vest

[Arachnoid cysts of the cerebellopontine angle].

The authors report two cases of arachnoid cysts of the cerebello-pontine angle. The otologic symptoms were unsteadiness, hearing fall and tinnitus. In the first case, the patient who presented a cerebellar syndrome was operated. Afterwards the hearing felt and he developed a transient hydrocephalus. The symptoms disappeared in 9 months. In the second cas, the patient was not operated. She was treated medically and supervised. Then the symptoms disappeared too. The authors review the paraclinic exams especially MR, relevant to the diagnosis and discuss the opportunity of a surgical operation.

Congenital cholesteatomas of the cerebellopontine angle.

Thirty cases of congenital cholesteatomas of the cerebellopontine angle (CPA) treated over a period of 20 years are reviewed with regard to their clinical features, the pathophysiology of their symptoms, and their management. The predominant symptoms were related to cranial nerves VII and VIII and headaches. Signs and symptoms were divided into those caused by local involvement of the cholesteatoma, increased intracranial pressure, or both. Diagnostic procedures from invasive procedures such as ventriculography to more sophisticated noninvasive procedures including computed tomography and magn

Microsurgical approach to the cerebellopontine angle.

Various sections of the IXth, Vth, vestibular and cochlear nerves have been performed on twenty patients. The technique we used was an 'a minima' approach to the cerebellopontine angle. This operation is atraumatic and quick to perform, and the postoperative period is always excellent. It seems very useful for patients with Ménière's disease or intractable pains in the glossopharyngeal or trigeminal fields. It can be used for diagnosis if a small neurinoma in the cerebellopontine angle is suspected.

Bruns Nystagmus in Cerebellopontine Angle Hemangioblastoma.

Bruns nystagmus is a form of jerk nystagmus that has a localizing value in cerebellopontine angle (CPA) tumors. Hemangioblastomas involving the CPA is rare. A case of a 57-year-old male presented with Bruns nystagmus which led to the discovery of a large CPA hemangioblastoma is described. The nystagmus was compatible with the laterality of the tumor. High quality video of Bruns nystagmus was recorded.

Microsurgical Resection of Cerebellopontine Angle Meningioma.

Meningiomas of the cerebellopontine angle (CPA) are the second most frequent lesions related to this region (around 10-15%), 1 being the vestibular schwannomas the first (around 85%). This lesions arise from the dura of the petrosal surface of the temporal bone, lateral to the trigeminal nerve ( Fig. 1 ). Variable attachment sites and directions of growth make different clinical presentations and operative challenges. This pathologies can be classified accordingly to they're extension related to the internal acoustic meatus in: postmeatal, premeatal, and large meningiomas with pre- and postmea

Audiologic presentation of cerebellopontine angle cholesteatoma.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the audiologic presentation of patients with cerebellopontine angle (CPA) cholesteatoma. DESIGN: Retrospective case review. SETTING: Neuro-otologic tertiary referral centre. METHODS: The study population consisted of 11 patients with CPA cholesteatomas. The patients underwent a standard audiologic investigation in the preoperative setting, which consisted of pure-tone audiometry, speech audiometry, and auditory brainstem response (ABR). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The audiologic parameters that were analyzed were the pure-tone threshold, pure-tone

Metastatic lesions involving the cerebellopontine angle.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical and MR findings of metastatic lesions involving the cerebellopontine angle (CPA), which may be useful in differentiating them from the more commonly occurring benign CPA lesions. METHODS: Clinical and MR findings of 14 patients with clinical/radiologic (seven) or pathologic (seven) diagnoses of CPA metastasis were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: Useful clinical findings included acute onset and rapid progression of cranial nerve symptoms, especially 7th and/or 8th cranial nerve deficits (92.9%). Cranial nerve symptoms could be unilateral (50%) and frequen

Stereotactic radiosurgery for cerebellopontine angle meningiomas.

OBJECT: To assess the long-term outcomes of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) for cerebellopontine angle (CPA) meningiomas, the authors retrospectively reviewed data from a 20-year experience. They evaluated progression-free survival as well as improvement, stabilization, or deterioration in clinical symptoms. METHODS: Seventy-four patients with CPA meningiomas underwent SRS involving various Gamma Knife technologies between 1990 and 2010. The most common presenting symptoms were dizziness or disequilibrium, hearing loss, facial sensory dysfunction, and headache. The median tumor volume was 3.0

Cerebellopontine angle lipoma with extracranial extension.

Lipomas of the cerebellopontine angle (CPA) are rare. A recent literature review identified only 98 reported cases of CPA lipoma. We present here a case of CPA lipoma in a 28-year-old woman who was admitted to our hospital with hearing loss in her left ear. Computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a CPA mass lesion with extracranial extension around the left internal carotiol artery. The patient was operated on in the sitting position via a right suboccipital craniectomy. The intracranial part of the mass was partially removed. Histopathological examination resulted in

[Vascular origin of cerebellopontine angle syndrome].

INTRODUCTION: The seventh and eighth cranial nerves course toward the internal auditory canal within the cerebellopontine angle. Lesions in this region are usually related to malfunctions of these cranial nerves. Although an acoustic schwannoma is one of the main etiologies of cerebellopontine angle pathology, various inflammatory processes and vascular anomalies even though rare must be considered. PATIENTS/METHODS: We describe 5 cases with vascular loops of the basilar or vertebral arteries as a possible cause for hearing loss, vertigo and pulsatile tinnitus. In two cases the vascular lesio
