[Changes in neurons of the cerebral cortex in senile dementia].

Using light and electron microscopy, the frontal, temporal and parietal cortical neurons were studied in 10 cases of senile dementia. It was found that along with general age-specific disorders of the ultrastructure of neurons and glial cells (varying degrees of chromatolysis, accumulation of lipofuscin, mitochondrial changes) the examination revealed ultrastructural shifts which might be characteristic of senile dementia. They include rearrangement of nuclear chromatin, destruction of nuclear membrane with the subsequent vacuolization of the nucleus and karyolysis, the appearance of polymorph

Manual dexterity: how does the cerebral cortex contribute?

1. Manual dexterity, of great evolutionary significance to the primates, ranges in complexity from the precise opposition of finger and thumb to Brendal playing Mozart. All dexterity depends on a sustained and rapid transfer of sensorimotor information between the cerebral cortex and the cervical spinal cord. 2. Multiple separate corticospinal neuron populations originate from cortical areas four, the supplementary motor area, anterior cingulate, postarcuate, parietal and insular cortex. Each corticospinal neuron population projects in parallel to all spinal segments, and has a distinctive pat

CONVULSANT DRUG ACTION ON NEURONALLY ISOLATED CEREBRAL CORTEX.

After topical application of thiosemicarbazide, semicarbazide, or isoniazid to the surface of an isolated region of cortex, convulsive responses to electrical stimulation appeared only after a finite number of normal responses had been elicited, and disappeared again if stimulation was interrupted for about 10 minutes. With any of the other convulsant drugs tested, development of the convulsive pattern was independent of whether or not the cortex was stimulated. The two groups of drugs evidently have dijferent modes of action.

Development of GABAergic Interneurons in the Human Cerebral Cortex.

GABAergic interneurons are critical regulators of information processing in the cerebral cortex. They constitute a heterogeneous group of neurons with unique spatial and temporal capabilities to control information flow and influence neural network dynamics through inhibitory and disinhibitory mechanisms. Interneuron diversity is largely conserved between rodents and primates, which indicates that the addition of new types of GABAergic neurons is not the most critical innovation of the primate cortex. In contrast, interneurons are much more abundant and seem more widely interconnected in the c

[Seizure Semiology and Functional Anatomy in the Cerebral Cortex].

Understanding the semiology and underlying anatomy of each seizure is essential for epilepsy surgeons. According to the International League Against Epilepsy(ILAE)classification in 2017, seizure types are classified as focal, generalized, or unknown onset, all of which are further classified as motor or non-motor onset. Impairment of awareness is involved in consciousness systems(consisting of subcortical structures such as the thalamus and upper brain stem)and cortical structures(including the frontoparietal association cortices). Seizures with motor features are divided into elementary sympt

Resurgent Sodium Current in Neurons of the Cerebral Cortex.

In the late '90, Dr. Indira Raman, at the time a postdoctoral fellow with Dr. Bruce Bean, at Harvard University, identified a new type of sodium current, flowing through the channels that reopens when the membrane is repolarized. This current, called "resurgent Sodium current," was originally identified in cerebellar Purkinje neurons and has now been confirmed in around 20 different neuronal types. Since moving to Northwestern University in 1999 to establish her own research group, Dr. Raman has dedicated great efforts in identifying the mechanisms supporting the resurgent Sodium current and h

Malformations of Cerebral Cortex Development: Molecules and Mechanisms.

Malformations of cortical development encompass heterogeneous groups of structural brain anomalies associated with complex neurodevelopmental disorders and diverse genetic and nongenetic etiologies. Recent progress in understanding the genetic basis of brain malformations has been driven by extraordinary advances in DNA sequencing technologies. For example, somatic mosaic mutations that activate mammalian target of rapamycin signaling in cortical progenitor cells during development are now recognized as the cause of hemimegalencephaly and some types of focal cortical dysplasia. In addition, re

Astrocytic clasmatodendrosis in the cerebral cortex of methamphetamine abusers.

Postmortem investigation of methamphetamine (MA) abuse is an important task in forensic pathology. The present study investigated morphological changes in the astrocytes in the parietal cerebral cortex of MA abusers. Glial fibrillary acidic protein immunoreactivity in the cerebral cortex was examined in forensic autopsy cases for MA-detected group and control group. Clasmatodendrotic astrocytes (including those with swollen cell bodies and disintegrating distal processes) were frequently observed in the cerebral cortex of MA abusers. Quantitative analysis using a colour image processor showed

Role of cerebral cortex in the neuropathology of Huntington's disease.

An expansion of glutamine repeats in the N-terminal domain of the huntingtin protein leads to Huntington's disease (HD), a neurodegenerative condition characterized by the presence of involuntary movements, dementia, and psychiatric disturbances. Evaluation of postmortem HD tissue indicates that the most prominent cell loss occurs in cerebral cortex and striatum, forebrain regions in which cortical pyramidal neurons (CPNs) and striatal medium spiny neurons (MSNs) are the most affected. Subsequent evidence obtained from HD patients and especially from transgenic mouse models of HD indicates tha

Morphology of the cerebral cortex in preclinical Huntington's disease.

OBJECTIVE: Cortical morphology was evaluated in subjects with known gene expansion for Huntington's disease and no manifest disease. METHOD: Magnetic resonance imaging scans were obtained for 24 subjects with preclinical Huntington's disease and were compared to those for 24 matched healthy subjects by means of novel imaging methods to quantify aspects of cortical structure. RESULTS: In relation to the comparison subjects, those with preclinical Huntington's disease showed altered cortex morphology with enlargement of gyral crowns and abnormally thin sulci. These changes were manifested in g

Spontaneous hemorrhage in the cerebral cortex of immature rats.

We report the presence of spontaneous hemorrhages in the brain of normal neonatal rats. The quantitative evaluation showed that the hemorrhaging was most frequent in 4- to 5-day-old rats. Nearly all the lesions were found in the cerebral cortex of the lateral part of the forebrain hemisphere, particularly in the middle cortical layers. Their average incidence amounted to 6.71 +/- 2.95 per six 5-microns sections from 5-day-old rats. The lesions were nearly absent in the newborn and 7-day-old animals. We suggest that vascular wall immaturity and some extravascular factors, like developmental inc

Role of cerebral cortex in voluntary movements. A review.

Findings from studies using electrical stimulation of cortex, recording from single neurons in awake animals, and measuring regional cerebral blood flow in humans have revealed some specific motor functions for several cerebral cortical areas. These areas include primary motor cortex, supplementary motor area, premotor area, parietal areas 5 and 7, and prefrontal area. Execution of movement is a function of the primary motor cortex, which translates program instructions for movement from other parts of the brain into signals. These signals encode variables of movement, such as the muscles to c

The projection of the vestibular nerve to the cerebral cortex in the cat.

1. The cerebral cortex in the cat has been examined for responses to contra-lateral vestibular nerve shocks and to natural stimuli.2. Stimulation of the nerve produces short latency (3.5 msec) surface positive responses in very restricted areas. Within these areas, unitary discharges occur during the equivalent negative phase below the surface.3. It has not been possible to evoke unitary activity in these areas by natural stimulation during light anaesthesia with pentobarbitone, chloralose or urethane.4. The distribution and properties of the shock evoked responses have been studied with speci

Cerebral autoregulation in middle cerebral artery territory precedes that of posterior cerebral artery in human cortex.

OBJECTIVE: Cerebral autoregulation tends to compensate changes in arterial blood pressure. This mechanism of cerebral blood flow regulation appears to be insufficient in orthostatic dysregulation in which mainly vertebrobasilar symptoms occur. To investigate this hypothesis, we compared cerebral autoregulation in the vascular territory of the carotic and vertebrobasilar vessel system using a leg cuff test to induce a drop in cerebral perfusion pressure. METHODS: We measured blood flow velocity in 10 healthy young volunteers (aged 26.7 +/- 0.3 years, 7 male) simultaneously in the middle and po
