Remote effects of temporal lobe epilepsy surgery: Long-term morphological changes after surgical resection.

OBJECTIVE: Epilepsy surgery is an effective treatment for drug-resistant patients. However, how different surgical approaches affect long-term brain structure remains poorly characterized. Here, we present a semiautomated method for quantifying structural changes after epilepsy surgery and compare the remote structural effects of two approaches, anterior temporal lobectomy (ATL), and selective amygdalohippocampectomy (SAH). METHODS: We studied 36 temporal lobe epilepsy patients who underwent resective surgery (ATL = 22, SAH = 14). All patients received same-scanner MR imaging preoperatively a

Abnormalities in deep-brain morphology and orbitofrontal cortical thinning relate to reward processing and body mass in adolescent girls.

BACKGROUND: Research examining the neural correlates of obesity has recently expanded. However, limited attention has focused on identifying unique brain signatures associated with obesity, particularly in adolescents. The aim of this study was to use surface-based approaches to examine the integrity of brain structures involved in processing the pleasurable effects of food with body mass and food reward sensitivity in adolescent girls. METHODS: Structural morphology of the nucleus accumbens, amygdala, pallidum, and orbitofrontal cortex was examined in 89 adolescent girls with body mass rangi

Helmet Technology, Head Impact Exposure, and Cortical Thinning Following a Season of High School Football.

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of wearing older, lower-ranked football helmets (LRank) to wearing newer, higher-ranked football helmets (HRank) on pre- to post-season changes in cortical thickness in response to repetitive head impacts and assess whether changes in cortical thickness are associated with head impact exposure for either helmet type. 105 male high-school athletes (NHRank = 52, NLRank = 53) wore accelerometers affixed behind the left mastoid during all practices and games for one regular season of American football to monitor head impact exposure. Pattern of cortical thickness in depression among early-stage Parkinson's disease: A potential neuroimaging indicator for early recognition.

PURPOSE: This study aims to investigate the early change in cortical thickness and surface area in early-stage depressed PD (dPD) patients, and its associations with severity of depression. METHODS: 59 patients with dPD, 27 patients with non-depressed PD (ndPD), and 43 healthy controls (HC) were recruited. The dPD patients were subclassified into mild-depressed PD (mi-dPD, n = 24), moderate-depressed PD (mo-dPD, n = 21) and severe-depressed PD (se-dPD, n = 14) subgroups. Structural MRI and surface-based morphometry analysis were applied to compare differences in cortical thickness and surface

The impact of education on cortical thickness in amyloid-negative subcortical vascular dementia: cognitive reserve hypothesis.

BACKGROUND: The protective effect of education has been well established in Alzheimer's disease, whereas its role in patients with isolated cerebrovascular diseases remains unclear. We examined the correlation of education with cortical thickness and cerebral small vessel disease markers in patients with pure subcortical vascular mild cognitive impairment (svMCI) and patients with pure subcortical vascular dementia (SVaD). METHODS: We analyzed 45 patients with svMCI and 47 patients with SVaD with negative results on Pittsburgh compound B positron emission tomographic imaging who underwent str

Cerebral cortex structure in prodromal Huntington disease.

Neuroimaging studies of subjects who are gene-expanded for Huntington Disease, but not yet diagnosed (termed prodromal HD), report that the cortex is "spared," despite the decrement in striatal and cerebral white-matter volume. Measurement of whole-cortex volume can mask more subtle, but potentially clinically relevant regional changes in volume, thinning, or surface area. The current study addressed this limitation by evaluating cortical morphology of 523 prodromal HD subjects. Participants included 693 individuals enrolled in the PREDICT-HD protocol. Of these participants, 523 carried the HD

Serum neurofilament light concentrations are associated with cortical thinning in anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is characterized by severe emaciation and drastic reductions of brain mass, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. The present study investigated the putative association between the serum-based protein markers of brain damage neurofilament light (NF-L), tau protein, and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and cortical thinning in acute AN. METHODS: Blood samples and magnetic resonance imaging scans were obtained from 52 predominantly adolescent, female patients with AN before and after partial weight restoration (increase in body mass index >14%).

Personalized brain MRI revealed distinct functional and anatomical disruptions in Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and Alzheimer's disease.

AIMS: Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is a lethal neurodegenerative disorder, which leads to a rapidly progressive dementia. This study aimed to examine the cortical alterations in CJD, changes in these brain characteristics over time, and the differences between CJD and Alzheimer's disease (AD) that show similar clinical manifestations. METHODS: To obtain reliable, subject-specific functional measures, we acquired 24 min of resting-state fMRI data from each subject. We applied an individual-based approach to characterize the functional brain organization of 10 patients with CJD, 8 matched pa

Chronic cluster headache: A study of the telencephalic and cerebellar cortical thickness.

PURPOSE: Previous studies on brain morphological alterations in chronic cluster headache revealed inconsistent findings. METHOD: The present cross-sectional explorative study determined telencephalic and cerebellar cortex thickness alterations in a relatively wide sample of chronic cluster headache patients (n = 28) comparing them to matched healthy individuals. RESULTS: The combination of two highly robust state-of-the-art approaches for thickness estimation (Freesurfer, CERES), strengthened by functional characterization of the identified abnormal regions, revealed four main results: chron

Cortical atrophy is associated with cognitive impairment in Parkinson's disease: a combined analysis of cortical thickness and functional connectivity.

We aimed to perform a combined analysis of cortical thickness and functional connectivity to explore their association with cognitive impairment in Parkinson's disease (PD). A total of 53 PD and 15 healthy control subjects were enrolled. PD patients were divided into PD with normal cognition (PD-NC, n = 25), PD with mild cognitive impairment (PD-MCI, n = 11), and PD with dementia (PDD, n = 17). In some analyses, the PD-MCI and PDD groups were aggregated to represent "PD patients with cognitive impairment". Cognitive status was assessed with the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Cortical thickness is related to cognitive-motor automaticity and attention allocation in individuals with Alzheimer's disease: a regions of interest study.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by a distinct pattern of cortical thinning and resultant changes in cognition and function. These result in prominent deficits in cognitive-motor automaticity. The relationship between AD-related cortical thinning and decreased automaticity is not well-understood. We aimed to investigate the relationship between cortical thickness regions-of-interest (ROI) and automaticity and attention allocation in AD using hypothesis-driven and exploratory approaches. We performed an ROI analysis of 46 patients with AD. Data regarding MR images, demographic characte

Not Just for Joints: The Associations of Moderate-to-Vigorous Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior with Brain Cortical Thickness.

INTRODUCTION: Cortical thinning is associated with aging; however, lifestyle factors can moderate this relationship. Two distinct lifestyle behaviors associated with brain health are regular moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and limited sedentary behavior (SB). However, it is unclear whether MVPA and SB levels contribute to cortical thickness independent of each other. We therefore investigated the independent relationships of MVPA and SB with cortical thickness using baseline data from a randomized controlled trial. METHODS: At baseline, we measured MVPA and SB for 7 d using the

Cannabis use and progressive cortical thickness loss in areas rich in CB1 receptors during the first five years of schizophrenia.

Cerebral grey matter volume reductions are progressive in schizophrenia, with larger grey matter volume decreases associated with cannabis use. It is unknown whether this grey matter loss is globally distributed over the entire brain or more pronounced in specific cortical brain regions. Fifty-one patients with recent-onset schizophrenia and 31 matched healthy subjects were included. For all subjects, magnetic resonance imaging scans were obtained at inclusion and at 5-year follow-up. Nineteen patients (ab-)used cannabis but no other illicit drugs; 32 patients and the healthy comparison subjec

Reduced thickness of medial orbitofrontal cortex in smokers.

BACKGROUND: Structural deficiencies within the prefrontal cortex might be related to drug-taking behavior that prevails in smokers. Cortical thickness has been found to be a structural modulator of cerebral function and cognition and a subtle correlate of mental disorders. However, to date an analysis of cortical thickness in smokers compared with never-smokers has not been undertaken. METHODS: We acquired high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging scans from 22 smokers and 21 never-smokers and used FreeSurfer to model the gray-white and pial surfaces for each individual cortex to compute the

Mitochondrial function-associated genes underlie cortical atrophy in prodromal synucleinopathies.

Isolated rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder (iRBD) is a sleep disorder characterized by the loss of rapid eye movement sleep muscle atonia and the appearance of abnormal movements and vocalizations during rapid eye movement sleep. It is a strong marker of incipient synucleinopathy such as dementia with Lewy bodies and Parkinson's disease. Patients with iRBD already show brain changes that are reminiscent of manifest synucleinopathies including brain atrophy. However, the mechanisms underlying the development of this atrophy remain poorly understood. In this study, we performed cutting

Surface-based morphometry study of brain in patients with carbon monoxide poisoning.

PURPOSE: Although cortical volume abnormalities are frequently detected in patients with carbon monoxide poisoning (COP), particularly delayed neurological sequelae (DNS), the associated changes in cortical thickness and shape patterns remain unknown. MATERIALS & METHODS: Using surface-based morphometry, we investigated the differences in cortical thickness and shape indices between a COP group (n = 44) vs healthy controls (HCs, n = 36), and between the DNS (n = 21) vs non-DNS (n = 23) subgroups. Additionally, the influence of cortical damage on neurological disorders was explored. RESULTS:

A task-specific cognitive domain decline is correlated with plasma and neuroimaging markers in patients with Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment is a disabling non-motor symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD). It remains uncertain whether declines in specific cognitive domains relate to imaging or plasma biomarkers across the disease continuum. OBJECTIVE: We investigated whether neuroimaging and plasma biomarkers correlate with individual task-specific cognitive domain declines evidenced by computerized neuropsychological tests in PD patients. METHODS: A total of 107 participants, including 87 PD patients (30 with normal cognition [PD-NC], 30 with mild cognitive impairment [PD-MCI], 27 with dementia [PDD
