[Purulent meningitis in children in Yaounde (Cameroon). Survey of complications using echoencephalography].

Sixty-one infants aged 0 to 12 months with documented purulent meningitis underwent transfontanellar ultrasonography at the Yaounde Central Hospital. Twenty-eight (45.90%) infants had evidence of complications including communicating hydrocephalus (20 patients; 71.43%), ventriculitis (5; 17.86%), abscess with ventriculitis (2; 7.14%), and cerebral atrophy (1; 3.57%). An analysis of the main epidemiological, bacteriological and clinical parameters found no correlation between the presence of ultrasound evidence of complications and age, sex, or color of the CSF. Conversely, a close correlation

Dynamic Intracranial Pressure Waveform Morphology Predicts Ventriculitis.

BACKGROUND: Intracranial pressure waveform morphology reflects compliance, which can be decreased by ventriculitis. We investigated whether morphologic analysis of intracranial pressure dynamics predicts the onset of ventriculitis. METHODS: Ventriculitis was defined as culture or Gram stain positive cerebrospinal fluid, warranting treatment. We developed a pipeline to automatically isolate segments of intracranial pressure waveforms from extraventricular catheters, extract dominant pulses, and obtain morphologically similar groupings. We used a previously validated clinician-supervised active

Talaromyces rugulosus ventriculitis diagnosed by nanopore amplicon sequencing, 2022.

Ventriculitis has serious complications and a high mortality rate, so it is important to early identification of the pathogen for appropriate treatment. We report case of ventriculitis caused by Talaromyces rugulosus, a rare pathogen, in South Korea. Affected patient was immunocompromised. Repeated cerebrospinal fluid culture tests were negative, but the pathogen was identified by fungal internal transcribed spacer amplicon nanopore sequencing. The pathogen was detected outside the endemic area of talaromycosis.

Recurrent primary pyogenic ventriculitis in an adult woman: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent primary pyogenic ventriculitis has not been reported previously. We present a unique case of recurrent primary pyogenic ventriculitis in an adult. And we believe that our study makes a significant contribution to the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: An adult woman with uncontrolled diabetes experienced two episodes of pyogenic ventriculitis caused by Escherichia coli over 4 years. She had typical imaging features, and the source of infection was undetermined. After antibiotic treatment, she recovered fully. CONCLUSIONS: Early recognition and therapy will improve patient p

How I do it: brainwashing for purulent ventriculitis.

BACKGROUND: The management of ventriculitis remains controversial, with no single management strategy that can provide a good outcome. There are few articles describing the brainwashing technique, and most for neonatal intraventricular hemorrhage. This technical note is important because it describes a practical way to perform brainwashing in case of ventriculitis, and it is more feasible compared to endoscopic lavage in developing countries. METHOD: We describe in a stepwise fashion the surgical technique of ventricular lavage. CONCLUSION: Ventricular lavage is a neglected technique that ca

Proton nuclear magnetic resonance-based metabonomics for rapid diagnosis of meningitis and ventriculitis.

BACKGROUND: Reduction of mortality associated with bacterial meningitis and postsurgical cerebral ventriculitis is dependent on early diagnosis and institution of appropriate therapy. Metabonomics rapidly defines metabolic profiles of biological fluids through the use of high-throughput analytical techniques combined with statistical pattern recognition tools. METHODS: Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR)-based metabonomics was applied to (1) lumbar cerebrospinal fluid samples collected prospectively from a cohort of patients with bacterial, fungal, or viral meningitis and from control

Varicella-zoster virus infection of the central nervous system in the acquired immune deficiency syndrome.

Productive varicella-zoster virus (VZV) infection of the central nervous system (CNS) was demonstrated in 11 acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients using immunocytochemistry and in situ hybridization. A characteristic zoster skin eruption was seen in only four cases. From our own series and 11 other cases in the literature, we identified five clinico-pathological patterns of VZV infection of the CNS in AIDS patients which could occur simultaneously. (i) Multifocal encephalitis predominantly involving the white matter, likely to be due to haematogenous spread of the infection was f

[Central nervous system infection due to varicella and zoster virus in AIDS].

We have reviewed 23 cases of varicella-zoster virus infection of the central nervous system in patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, previously reported in the literature, including 11 from our own series. This allowed us to identify 5 clinico-pathological patterns which could occur simultaneously. In most cases, viral proteins or viral genome were identified using immunocytochemistry or in situ hybridization. Multifocal encephalitis involves predominantly the white matter and is likely to be due to haematogenous spread of the infection. Ventriculitis may have variable appearan

Intraventricular Antibiotic Administration for the Treatment of Neonatal Ventriculitis: A Systematic Review.

Neonatal ventriculitis is a complication of meningitis and is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Despite clinical importance, evidence regarding intraventricular antibiotic therapy has not been systematically collated. Our aim was to evaluate the existing literature on intraventricular antibiotic administration for neonatal ventriculitis, focusing on indications, antibiotic type, dosage, administration intervals, adverse effects, and patient outcomes. A systematic search of Ovid MEDLINE, PubMed, EMBASE, CENTRAL, and Scopus was conducted up to October 2025. Conference abstracts, lett

[Multiloculated Hydrocephalus Complicated by Meningitis and Ventriculitis Treated with Staged Fenestration:A Case Report].

Multiloculated hydrocephalus following severe meningitis with ventriculitis is often therapeutically challenging. Neonatal meningitis is commonly associated with ventricular inflammation, and approximately 30% of patients show septum formation. Although placement of a single ventriculoperitoneal shunt system could serve as optimal treatment for a multiloculated cerebrospinal cavity that is converted into a single chamber, multiple devices are often required for disease stability. We report a case of multiloculated hydrocephalus that occurred after meningitis in a patient who was successfully t

[Neonate with Ventriculitis caused by Empedobacter Brevis: Report of a case in Peru].

Infections caused by rare micro-organisms are the subject of research, as researchers are encouraged to find the necessary health measures to prevent and treat the disease, as well as the search for new insights into human-microbial interactions. This report describes the case of a newborn boy diagnosed with hydrocephalus and myelomeningocele who developed ventriculitis and sepsis from resistant Empedobacter brevis. This case highlights the unexpected identification of this bacterium in the cerebrospinal fluid and its multi-resistant pattern, which was crucial for proper therapeutic management

Community-Acquired Meningitis Complicated With Pyogenic Ventriculitis and Hydrocephalus in a Patient With Haematological Malignancy: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Meningitis, an infection of the meninges of the central nervous system (CNS), can advance quickly and carries a mortality rate reaching 30% among affected patients. It may become complicated by conditions such as hydrocephalus, ventriculitis, and cerebral abscess. Here, we describe a case of meningitis that was complicated by pyogenic ventriculitis and hydrocephalus in a patient with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) who underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The patient presented with acute change in mental status and high-grade fever, with few episodes of non-bloody vomiting. Blood cul

The evaluation of ependymal and subependymal lesions by cranial computed tomography.

Lesions of the ventricular ependyma and its derivatives can be visualized by CT scans, and their nature and extent can be determined. Generalized enhancement of the ependyma following the administration of intravenous contrast media can be seen with spendymoma, medulloblastoma, metastatic dysgerminoma, glioblastoma multiforme, and ependymitis. Localized ependymal enhancement can often be identified in the presence of acute ventriculitis, vascular anomalies or malformations, cerebral infarctions with luxury perfusion, and vascular neoplasms.

Streptococcus p neumoniae Meningitis with Diffuse Cerebral Microhemorrhages.

Streptococcus pneumoniae is the leading cause of community-acquired bacterial meningitis across all age groups. Despite appropriate antibiotic therapy, the prognosis for pneumococcal meningitis remains poor. While common acute complications include cerebral edema, brain herniation, ventriculitis, hydrocephalus, and cerebral infarctions, hemorrhagic events are rarely reported. We present a case of a young male with S. pneumoniae meningitis, who developed diffuse cerebral microhemorrhages, an extremely rare complication. Despite culture-guided antibiotic therapy, the patient's condition deterior

Unusual encephaloclastic lesions with paraventricular calcification in congenital rubella.

We report an unusual case of congenital rubella. The infant was suffering from a serious encephalopathy, and both prenatal echography and neonatal CT scan showed passive ventriculomegaly with a calcified periventricular border. Usually, such lesions are strongly suggestive of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection and have never previously been reported in congenital rubella. Classic cerebral lesions in rubella are related to a prominent obstructive vasculopathy. Conversely, encephaloclastic lesions in CMV infection are likely related to a necrosis of brain parenchyma following upon an initial ventri
