RATIONALE: In previous studies, few cases of cervical myelopathy caused by invaginated anomalous laminae of the axis have been reported, and none of them was combined with occipitalization of the atlas.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 28-year-old male was brought to our hospital with motor and sensory impairments of the extremities after a car accident.
DIAGNOSES: MRI showed the spinal cord was markedly compressed at the C2/3 level. Reconstructed CT scans revealed an invaginated laminae of axis into the spinal canal as well as atlas assimilation.
INTERVENTIONS: The patient was successfully managed with

Congenital anomalies of the posterior arch of the atlas (PAA) are usually asymptomatic and diagnosed incidentally. Very rarely, they present with cervical myelopathy, usually being associated with partial aplasia or agenesis of PAA. We describe a 44-year-old lady with cervical myelopathy secondary to a malformed PAA with developmental atlas-level spinal stenosis and a congenital posterior fusion defect with persistent midline cleft showing significant non-osseous fibro-cartilaginous hypertrophy, causing critical cord compression. Spinal decompression by en-bloc wide excision of anomalous arch

Though rare, a variety of bipartite atlas has been described. However, little has been mentioned about the hypoplastic C1 lateral masses in these cases. An unusual case of bipartite atlas, with hypoplastic lateral masses, os odontoideum and block vertebrae has been described with the surgical challenges encountered. The emphasis here is to study the C1 lateral masses and attempting C1-2 fusion before resorting to occipito-cervical fusion. A 42-year-old lady presented with progressive spastic quadriparesis. Radiology revealed blocked C2-5 vertebrae with os odontoideum with atlanto-axial disloca

Penetrating neck injuries (PNI) are a rare presentation of all trauma cases. A rational strategy and prompt patient assessment are necessary for management. Selective treatment has replaced mandatory exploration in the treatment of penetrating neck trauma. A 41-year-old male patient was admitted to the emergency department with an arrow penetrating the neck, without signs of neurological deficit. He had an arrow impacted into the right posterolateral aspect of his neck just posterior to the sternocleidomastoid muscle, corresponding to the axial level of the C1-C2 vertebra. The arrow was dislod

AIM: To describe the morphometry of the atlas vertebrae regarding sex and age in posterior cervical surgery, provide a data source for surgery, and compare with other populations. In surgical operations, the morphology and morphometry of the atlas must be known.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Computed tomography images of 300 individuals aged 20-69 and referred to the hospital between 2020 and 2023 were used in retrospective research. The 14 parameters determined were examined in five groups formed by dividing ages into decades. The following parameters were measured: the transverse foramen area (TFA)

STUDY DESIGN: Case report.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Cervical myelopathy caused by osteophyte formation appearing at the pseudoarthrosis between the posterior arch of the atlas and the lamina of the axis is extremely rare. To our knowledge, only 2 cases in non-Klippel-Feil syndrome have been reported so far.
METHODS: A 61-year-old man, who was diagnosed as Klippel-Feil syndrome with assimilation between C2 and C3 vertebrae, which were fused in hyperlordosis, suffered cervical myelopathy. Complete bipartition of the atlas was also demonstrated. Massive osteophytes, which severely compressed

A rare case of a wide congenital atlas defect is reported. A 25 year-old woman was admitted after complaints of radicular pain in the right arm. Radiographs incidentally revealed aplasia of the posterior arch of the atlas together with anterior rachischisis. A review of the literature is presented and a possible association with early disc degeneration is discussed.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to measure the frequency with which the atlas transverse process is overlapped by the inferior tip of the mastoid process based upon radiographic analysis of the anterior to posterior open mouth (APOM) cervical spine view.
METHODS: This is a retrospective study. Anterior to posterior open mouth radiographs (N = 120) were obtained from patient files at a chiropractic clinic. Dimensions were bilaterally measured: the vertical distance from the inferior mastoid to the superior margin of the C1 transverse process (C1TP) and the vertical distance from the i

Dizziness is a non-specific and common condition in which the afflicted individual experiences abnormal sensations such as lightheadedness, imbalance, or a false sense of spinning (vertigo). The experience of "dizziness" can result from a wide spectrum of abnormal physiological states, including exhaustion, hypotension, and hypoglycemia, but could also indicate a serious underlying health issue. Since it has many potential generating causes, accurate identification of the underlying etiology of dizziness can present a challenge to clinicians, often resulting in ineffective treatments. We prese

BACKGROUND: Glossopharyngeal neuralgia (GPN) is a condition that causes simultaneous headache and facial pain. The treatment for GPN is similar to the treatment for trigeminal neuralgia. Craniotomy microvascular decompression (MVD) or radiofrequency (RF) therapy is needed if conservative treatment with oral drugs fails. Therefore, the choice of radiofrequency therapy target is essential when treating GPN. However, finding the glossopharyngeal nerve simply by styloid process positioning is challenging.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, clinical research study.

OBJECTIVE: Congenital anomalies of the atlanto-occipital articulation may be present in patients with Chiari malformation type I (CM-I). However, it is unclear how these anomalies affect the biomechanical stability of the craniovertebral junction (CVJ) and whether they are associated with an increased incidence of occipitocervical fusion (OCF) following posterior fossa decompression (PFD). The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of condylar hypoplasia and atlas anomalies in children with CM-I and syringomyelia. The authors also investigated the predictive contribution of th

A 23-year-old man admitted to our hospital with headache and dysarthria. Head MRI showed multiple acute cerebral infarctions in the right posterior circulation. Atlantoaxial dislocation, atlas dysplasia and thrombotic occlusion of right vertebral artery (VA), and blood flow disruption due to cervical rotation was observed. The axial dental process bordered to the right VA, and repeated contact stimulation by cervical rotation may cause intimal damage resulting in thrombotic occlusion. In this case, various systemic malformations such as atrial septal defect, atlas posterior arch hypoplasia, bo
