Cervicogenic dizziness (CGD) is a syndrome of neck pain accompanied by a false sensation of unsteadiness and dizziness due to neck pathology. An 11-year-old girl presented with neck pain and dizziness for four months. According to the patient's statement, her complaints were likely related to the prolonged smartphone use for texting. Sagittal radiograph showed cervical kyphosis, anterior wedging of several vertebrae, and mild anterolisthesis of C2 on C3 and C3 on C4. These findings might be present in as physiological variants in children. However, continuous static stress in the minor variant

Atlantoaxial dislocation (AAD) or subluxation (AAS) is a potentially life-threatening disorder caused by instability between the atlas and axis. Typical symptoms include neck pain, torticollis, and neurological deficits, but dizziness has rarely been reported in association with AAD/AAS. We describe an adolescent girl who presented with non-spinning dizziness, neck pain, and torticollis after prolonged head flexion and extension. Neurological examination showed rightward torticollis without nystagmus. Cervical spine imaging revealed atlantoaxial rotatory dislocation and fixation, while CT angi

BACKGROUND Vertebrobasilar insufficiency (VBI) is most often caused by vertebrobasilar atherosclerosis, often presenting with dizziness and occasionally neck pain. Little research or guidelines regarding management of neck pain in affected patients exists. CASE REPORT A 62-year-old male hypertensive smoker presented to a chiropractor with a 13-year history of insidious-onset neck pain, dizziness, and occipital headache with a Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI) of 52%. The patient had known VBI, caused by bilateral vertebral artery plaques, and cervical spondylosis, and was treated with multipl

BACKGROUND: Dizziness in older adults is a complex, often multifactorial condition that can lead to an increased risk of falls, heightened anxiety, and loss of independence. Its nonspecific presentation complicates accurate diagnosis and treatment planning given the potential involvement of vestibular, musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, or psychological systems.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this case report is to describe the differential diagnosis process for a patient with atypical chronic dizziness and highlight the role of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (I

Objectives: Muscular dysfunction of the cervical spine is the most likely cause of somatosensory tinnitus and dizziness. Some patients can modulate their tinnitus through movement or palpation. This study aimed to investigate the effect of manual therapy on muscle pressure pain, range of motion in the cervical spine, and tinnitus and dizziness. Methods: A pilot randomized controlled trial with a waiting-group design was conducted in a university hospital setting. Participants in the intervention group received manual therapy to the head and neck region combined with stretching exercises and mu

OBJECTIVES: Dizziness after a sports-related concussion is very common and is associated with prolonged recovery. The events in sports that cause concussion include strong mechanical forces exerted to the head and neck, potentially injuring the cervical region, the peripheral vestibular and central nervous system, all of which can contribute to a sensation of dizziness. The purpose of this study was to identify proper clinically administered tests and measures that are useful in differentiating between cervicogenic and other causes of dizziness after a sports-related concussion.
DESIGN: The D

The derangement of the atlantoaxial joint is one of main cervical sources of dizziness and headache, which were based on the observation on the anatomy of the upper cervical vertebrae, analysis of X-ray film of the atlantoaxial joint, and the manipulative treatment in 35 patients with cervical spondylosis. The clinical diagnosis of derangement consists of: dizziness, headache, prominence and tenderness on one side of the affected vertebra, deviation of the dens for 1 mm-4 mm on the open-mouth X-ray film, abnormal movement of the atlantoaxial joint on head-rotated open-mouth X-ray film. An accu

The middle ear pressure was analyzed in 112 patients with dizziness. In 37 patients with Meniere's disease, the middle ear pressure on the low-pressure side was significantly lower, the middle ear pressure difference (between the high and low sides) was significantly larger, and the maximum compliance on the low-compliance side was significantly lower than in normal volunteers. The middle ear pressure difference was significantly larger during periods of dizziness or recurrent dizziness than at the time of remission. In patients with Meniere's disease, a middle ear pressure difference of more

Dizziness and subjective balance disturbances are common complaints in cervical pain syndromes. We assessed balance function with posturography using vibration-induced and galvanically-induced body sway in consecutive patients (n = 116) with cervico-brachial pain syndrome of more than 3 months' duration. A total of 83% of the patients showed signs of cervical root compression on MRT scans. The incidence of complaints of vertigo was 50%. The patients manifested significantly poorer postural control than sex- and age-matched controls (n = 20). Disorders of the neck should be considered when asse

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus and vertigo have been studied in many ways. This led to a variety of explanations from multiple medical disciplines. The musculature of the jaw and cervical spine have also been researched in this regard. Dysfunctional musculature can trigger tinnitus and dizziness. This subtype of tinnitus is called cervicogenic somatosensory tinnitus.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of manual therapy on subject-reported, individually perceived impairment due to cervicogenic somatosensory tinnitus (Tinnitus Handicap Inventory), dizziness (Dizziness H

After cervical sprain not only pain and neuropsychological disturbances may occur, but also the following sequelae: cervical dystonia, and torticollis, dizziness, hearing loss for low frequencies, dysphonia and globus. Except for dystonia the symptoms often respond to manipulation of a blocked articulation between occiput and atlas or axis and the third cervical vertebra.
