Deep Learning-Based Automated Measurement of Cervical Length in Transvaginal Ultrasound Images of Pregnant Women.

Cervical length (CL) measurement using transvaginal ultrasound is an effective screening tool to assess the risk of preterm birth. An adequate assessment of CL is crucial, however, manual sonographic CL measurement is highly operator-dependent and cumbersome. Therefore, a reliable and reproducible automatic method for CL measurement is in high demand to reduce inter-rater variability and improve workflow. Despite the increasing use of artificial intelligence techniques in ultrasound, applying deep learning (DL) to analyze ultrasound images of the cervix remains a challenge due to low signal-to

Cost-effectiveness of universal routine sonographic cervical-length measurement at 19 to 25 weeks' gestation.

BACKGROUND: National second-trimester scanning of cervical length was introduced in Israel in 2010, and in the decade thereafter, a significant systematic reduction in preterm birth and in the delivery of low birthweight babies was found among singletons. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we sought to estimate the cost-effectiveness of a national policy mandating second-trimester cervical length screening by ultrasound, followed by vaginal progesterone treatment for short cervical length in comparison with no screening strategy. STUDY DESIGN: We constructed a decision model comparing 2 strategies, n

Intra- and interobserver reproducibility of second trimester ultrasound cervical length measurement in a general population.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the reproducibility of ultrasound cervical length (CL) measurement at the second trimester. METHODS: A set of 565 cervical ultrasound images were collected at 19 + 0-24 + 6 weeks' gestation. Two senior maternal-fetal specialists measured CL in each image on three occasions 2 weeks apart. In the interval between the first and following two measures, the clinicians reviewed 20 images together to agree on the criteria for measurement. Measurements were analyzed for intra- and inter-observer disagreement. The robustness of patient classification when CL measure was used wi

Developing a quality assurance program for transvaginal cervical length measurement at 18-21 weeks' gestation.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth is the leading cause of death in children under the age of five years. Transvaginal cervical length (TVCL) assessment can be used to predict preterm delivery risk at the mid-trimester scan. To optimise the screening tool, developing and maintaining quality standards is important. AIMS: To develop an Australian reference range for TVCL at 18.0-21.0 weeks' gestation, quality standards for measurement and audit mechanisms for ultrasound operators. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective audit was performed of consecutive patients scanned at 18.0-21.0 weeks' gestation. E

[Sonographic measurement of cervical length and prediction of spontaneous preterm delivery: how useful is it?].

Preterm delivery is a major concern in Maternal-Fetal Medicine. The sonographic measurement of the cervix is a reproducible and safe method to assess cervical length. Many authors have shown the benefits of cervical assessment in the screening of pregnant women at risk of preterm labor. Although screening could be useful in women at high-risk for preterm spontaneous labor, in a low-risk population the accuracy of the method is limited. An important issue is the usefulness of cervical cerclage to prevent preterm birth when a short cervix is detected by ultrasonography. In this review, the autho
