Rodentolepis straminea (Cestoda: Hymenolepididae) in an urban population of Apodemus sylvaticus in the UK.

The presence of the cyclophyllidean cestode Rodentolepis straminea (Cestoda: Hymenolepididae), was confirmed by molecular DNA analysis from a wood mouse (Apodemus sylvaticus) population inhabiting urban woodland in Salford, Greater Manchester (UK) with a prevalence of 27.8%. It would appear that the only previously published record of this species in A. sylvaticus in the British Isles is that from south-west Ireland, where 24% of the wood mice examined were infected with R. straminea. This species has been recorded in studies on A. sylvaticus in continental Europe. The current report represent

The Effect of Salinity on Egg Development and Viability of Schistocephalus solidus (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidea).

Schistocephalus solidus plerocercoids commonly infect three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus populations in brackish and freshwaters, but infections are typically absent from marine populations. Here we provide an experimental test of the salinity tolerance of S. solidus eggs, to determine the role of salinity in limiting the distribution of infection in coastal zones. We find that S. solidus eggs, derived from the in vitro culture of 3 different plerocercoids, developed normally in salinities of up to 12.5‰, but above this egg viability dropped rapidly, and no egg hatching was observ

Synthesis and in vitro activity of alkylaminoalkyloxy chromones on protoscoleces of Echinococcus multilocularis (Cestoda).

Twelve derivatives with alkylaminoalkyloxy chromone structures were synthesized and tested upon protoscoleces of Echinococcus multilocularis metacestode kept alive in vitro. Assays were performed with protoscoleces attached to the germinal layer in open and in closed vesicles. Compounds IVb and IIIe at the concentration of 0.1 mmol.L-1 killed 50% of the protoscoleces in open vesicles in 48 hours and compound IVb killed 100% of the protoscoleces in open vesicles within 96 hours at the same concentration. In closed vesicles after four days compound IVb killed all protoscoleces, compounds IIIe an

Biochemical and ultrastructural investigation of the effect of Stelazine (trifluoperazine) on Hymenolepis diminuta (Cestoda).

The effects of the phenothiazine, Stelazine, on Hymenolepis diminuta were investigated. The cestode was incubated for 10 min at 37 degrees C with 1 mM trifluoperazine, in the presence and absence of Ca2+. Assay of brush border enzymes showed that drug treatment lowered the activities of alkaline phosphatase, Ca2+-ATP'ase, 5'-nucleotidase and type 1 phosphodiesterase. This occurred in parallel with a significant reduction in tegumental protein. Under these conditions gross changes in ultrastructural appearance and cellular organization were observed. There was a lack of ordered microtriches and

Taenia saginata (Cestoda) in western Kenya: the reliability of faecal examinations in diagnosis.

The prevalence of Taenia saginata (Cestoda) among 146 predominantly Pokot tribesmen in western Kenya was studied in an attempt to assess the reliability of detecting infections by faecal examinations. firstly, a single faecal sample was microscopically examined after being processed by a standard ether sedimentation technique. Secondly, all subjects were treated with niclosamide and a purgative and the tapeworms were recovered. In this way the efficiency of diagnosing infections by faecal examinations was estimated. T. saginata eggs were found in the faeces of 68% of the men who were eventuall

Genetic Diversity of Taenia hydatigena (Cestoda: Cyclophyllidea) in Small Ruminants from Algeria.

PURPOSE: Taenia hydatigena is a globally distributed cestode causing cysticercosis in livestock, particularly in small ruminants. In North Africa, data on its distribution and prevalence are scarce, with no prior studies addressing its molecular epidemiology. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and genetic diversity of T. hydatigena in sheep and goats from Algeria. METHODS: A total of 1,002 animals (939 sheep and 63 goats) were examined for the presence of T. hydatigena cysts at the municipal slaughterhouse of Djelfa province between October 2021 and July 2022. Sixty-nine isolates w

Development of 14 Microsatellite Markers for Zoonotic Tapeworm Dibothriocephalus dendriticus (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidea).

Dibothriocephalus dendriticus is one of the causative agents of the fish-borne zoonosis diphyllobothriosis. Polymorphic microsatellite markers were originally developed for future genetic studies using microsatellite library screening and next-generation sequencing (NGS). Out of 128 microsatellite candidates selected after NGS analysis, 126 yielded PCR products of the expected size. A declared repetitive motif was confirmed in 92 loci by Sanger sequencing. The level of polymorphism was tested by fragment analysis. Statistical tests for observed and expected heterozygosities and deviations from

Sparganosis due to Spirometra sp. (cestoda; Diphyllobothriidae) in captive meerkats (Suricata suricatta).

We report three cases of sparganosis due to plerocercoids of the tapeworm Spirometra sp. in captive meerkats (Suricata suricatta) from a zoo exhibit in the southeastern United States. Two meerkats were euthanized, one due to an uncontrollable seizure and the other due to trauma, and at necropsy cysts containing cestode larvae were observed. A third meerkat had a subcutaneous nodule surgically removed, which contained similar larvae. The third animal died years later, and had numerous cestode larvae in the pleural and peritoneal cavities. The larvae were morphologically identified as plerocerco

Multiplex PCR for differential identification of broad tapeworms (Cestoda: Diphyllobothrium) infecting humans.

The specific identification of broad tapeworms (genus Diphyllobothrium) infecting humans is very difficult to perform by morphological observation. Molecular analysis by PCR and sequencing represents the only reliable tool to date to identify these parasites to the species level. Due to the recent spread of human diphyllobothriosis in several countries, a correct diagnosis has become crucial to better understand the distribution and the life cycle of human-infecting species as well as to prevent the introduction of parasites to disease-free water systems. Nevertheless, PCR and sequencing, alth

Cysticerci (Cestoda: Taeniidae) from white-tailed deer, Odocoileus virginianus, in southern Florida.

Metacestodes (cysticerci) of Taenia omissa Lühe, 1910, and Taenia hydatigena Pallas, 1776, were found in 9 and 1 of 124 white-tailed deer, respectively, in southern Florida in 1984-1986. Intensities of T. omissa varied from 1 to 15 (mean = 4.6); only 1 cysticercus of T. hydatigena was collected. No significant difference in the prevalences of T. omissa according to sex, age, or locality was observed.

Global molecular diversity of the zoonotic tapeworm Spirometra mansoni (Cobbold, 1883) (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidea).

Spirometra mansoni is a zoonotic tapeworm with a global distribution; however, its population-level genetic structure and phylogeographic patterns remain poorly understood. Robust phylogeographic inference is essential to understand diversification and the geographical structuring of its mitochondrial diversity. We analysed three datasets of newly generated and publicly available mitochondrial cox1 sequences differing in length: a short-fragment alignment (303 bp; n = 319), a full-length dataset (1556 bp; n = 101) and a length-matched subset extracted from the full-length sequences (303 bp; n

Molecular Characterization of Echinococcus canadensis (Cestoda, Taeniidae) in Wolf from the Kirov Region.

This work presents the results of studying the molecular characteristics of parasitic tapeworms Echinococcus canadensis. The helminths were discovered during the autopsy of a wolf (Canis lupus Linnaeus, 1758) killed by hunters in the Kirov oblast in 2021. A molecular phylogenetic study was performed by analyzing the sequence of a fragment of the first subunit of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase gene (CoxI). It was found that the detected echinococci belong to the G10 genotype of E. canadensis, which is common in wolves in the northern territories of the Holarctic. We discovered four positi

Characterization of the complete mitochondrial genome of Spirometra decipiens (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae) from China.

The plerocercoid larvae (spargana) of Spirometra decipiens (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae) can parasitize humans, causing the zoonotic sparganosis. In this study, the complete mitochondrial genome of this tapeworm was determined using an Illumina sequencing platform. The entire genome was 13,642 bp in length and contained 12 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNAs, two ribosomal RNAs, and two non-coding regions. The phylogeny indicated that S. decipiens was closely related to Spirometra erinaceieuropaei and supported the monophyletic relationships between Spirometra, Diphyllobothrium, and Diplogo

Redescription of Sciadocephalus megalodiscus Diesing, 1850, An Unusual Neotropical Fish Tapeworm (Cestoda: Proteocephalidae).

The tapeworm Sciadocephalus megalodiscus Diesing, 1850 (Cestoda: Proteocephalidae), is redescribed based on newly collected specimens parasitizing tucunare peacock bass, Cichla monoculus Agassiz, 1831 (Perciformes: Cichlidae), in the Peruvian Amazon. Even though this cestode was redescribed 2 decades ago, that redescription did not report some of the unique features of this species. The most unusual characteristics of the species are (1) peculiar formation of the uterus, with fast formation of numerous, tightly packed diverticula protruding ventrally and dorsally, with simultaneous disintegrat

Definitive Hosts of Versteria Tapeworms (Cestoda: Taeniidae) Causing Fatal Infection in North America.

We previously reported fatal infection of a captive Bornean orangutan with metacestodes of a novel taeniid tapeworm, Versteria sp. New data implicate mustelids as definitive hosts of these tapeworms in North America. At least 2 parasite genetic lineages circulate in North America, representing separate introductions from Eurasia.

Molecular identification of Spirometra spp. (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae) in some wild animals from Brazil.

Species of the genus Spirometra are diphyllobothriid tapeworms with complex life cycles and are involved in human sparganosis, a neglected disease that affects individuals worldwide. Although some species were reported in wild felids and human cases of sparganosis were described in Brazil, the biology and taxonomy of these parasites are poorly understood. In the present study, samples of diphyllobothriids (eggs and/or proglottids) obtained from the stools of wild carnivores (Leopardus pardalis and Lycalopex vetulus) and plerocercoid larvae found in a snake (Crotalus durissus) from Brazil were
