The conspecific alarm substance (CAS), a chemical compound likely based on glycosaminoglycans, purines, and nitrogen oxide-based pterins, is a natural stressor released by specialized epidermal cells damaged by injury or attack in fish, inducing hormonal and behavioral changes in conspecifics. Its effects in the reproductive context are poorly understood, but previous studies have demonstrated earlier spawning in broodstock exposed to CAS and an influence on the larval length of the offspring, potentially linked to increased cortisol transfer. In this study, 53 sexually mature specimens of Ast

Colonization of novel habitats often results in the evolution of diverse behaviors. Comparisons between individuals from closely related populations that have evolved divergent behaviors in different environments can be used to investigate behavioral evolution. However, until recently, functionally connecting genotypes to behavioral phenotypes in these evolutionarily relevant organisms has been difficult. The development of gene editing tools will facilitate functional genetic analysis of genotype-phenotype connections in virtually any organism, and has the potential to significantly transform

Feeding strategies of an organism depend on the multimodal sensory processing that most efficiently integrates available visual, chemosensory, and/or mechanoreceptive cues as part of their environmental adaptation. The blind cavefish morph of Astyanax mexicanus has developed sensory-dependent behaviors to find food more efficiently than their eyed, surface-morph counterparts while in darkness. In the absence of light, adult cavefish have evolved enhanced behaviors, such as vibration attraction behavior (VAB), and changes in feeding angle. Here, we identified evolved differences in cavefish lar

The Mexican tetra (Astyanax mexicanus) is one of the fresh water teleost fish models in evolutionary developmental biology. The existence of two morphs: eyed, pigmented surface fish and blind depigmented cavefish from multiple cave populations, provides a unique system to study adaptive radiation. Compared to the adult surface fish, cavefish have large oral jaws with an increased number of structurally-complex teeth. Early tooth development has not been studied in detail in cavefish populations. In this study, bone-stained growth series and vital dye staining was used to trace the development

Evolution in response to a change in ecology often coincides with various morphological, physiological, and behavioral traits. For most organisms little is known about the genetic and functional relationship between evolutionarily derived traits, representing a critical gap in our understanding of adaptation. The Mexican tetra, Astyanax mexicanus, consists of largely independent populations of fish that inhabit at least 30 caves in Northeast Mexico, and a surface fish population, that inhabit the rivers of Mexico and Southern Texas. The recent application of molecular genetic approaches combin

GnRH is well known as a key decapeptide neurohormone involved in reproduction, stimulating the pituitary gland to release gonadotropins (LH and FSH), which, in turn, regulate steroidogenesis and gametogenesis. However, in addition to its reproductive functions, GnRH displays neuromodulatory roles with implications for sexual behavior. The pattern of distribution in the brain of GnRH may help reveal GnRH specific functions. Therefore, the main emphasis of this study is to detect the presence and distribution of GnRH in the brain of the freshwater teleost Astyanax altiparanae ("lambari"). The im

Over the course of development, sensory systems must integrate specialized cells and tissues to generate a functional unit. A robust example of this type of integration is the lateral line, a mechanosensory system in fishes and amphibians that senses changes in water movement. Over the past century, numerous reports noted that the principal organs of the lateral line-neuromasts-co-localize to the position of ossification centers for bones of the facial skeleton. More recent work in the freshwater model system, Astyanax mexicanus, revealed facial bones of the suborbital complex frequently fuse

Collective motion in fish schools emerges from local social interactions, whose strength may vary with behavioural context. Swimming speed is known to influence manoeuvrability, spatial organization and information flow, yet its causal role in shaping social interaction strength remains poorly understood. Here, we experimentally test whether and how neighbour speed modulates social interactions in schooling fish. Using an immersive open-loop virtual-reality system, we exposed freely swimming rummy-nose tetras Hemigrammus rhodostomus to a single virtual conspecific moving along circular traject

Vitamin A is an essential micronutrient that supports vision, immunity, and development, yet excess vitamin A can be toxic. Most vertebrates maintain tightly regulated vitamin A levels by cleaving dietary carotenoids into retinoids via specialized enzymes, including the carotenoid oxygenase Bco2. To what extent genetic changes in carotenoid-metabolism enzymes such as Bco2 drive natural variation in vitamin A homeostasis remains unclear. Here, we show that some cave-adapted populations of the Mexican tetra (Astyanax mexicanus) have evolved loss-of-function mutations in bco2a. The mutations yiel

The salinization of aquatic environments, driven by natural processes and human activities such as agricultural irrigation and industrial waste disposal, poses a growing threat to freshwater ecosystems. Astyanax bimaculatus, a fish species native to the Amazon basin, is known for its resilience to environmental variations, including salinity changes. However, the effects of this stressor on its reproductive function, especially spermatogenesis, remained unknown. This study evaluated these impacts by exposing sexually mature males of the species to different salinity concentrations (0, 5, 10, a

Evolution in similar environments often leads to convergence of behavioral and anatomical traits. A classic example of convergent trait evolution is the reduced traits that characterize many cave animals: reduction or loss of pigmentation and eyes. While these traits have evolved many times, relatively little is known about whether these traits repeatedly evolve through the same or different molecular and developmental mechanisms. The small freshwater fish, Astyanax mexicanus, provides an opportunity to investigate the repeated evolution of cave traits. A. mexicanus exists as two forms, a sigh

BACKGROUND: Astyanax mexicanus is a single species of fish that consists of river-dwelling (surface) and cave-dwelling morphotypes. Little is known about how sexual determination, differentiation or reproduction have evolved in the surface morphs or cavefish, though divergence in reproductive strategy is expected as the latter have adapted to the novel cave environment. Evolution of the gonad transcriptome may underlie the differences in gamete morphology, fertility, and fecundity previously reported between morphotypes.
RESULTS: We compared the ovary and testis transcriptome of surface fish

The dactylogyrid monogeneans Anacanthorus penilabiatus (Boeger, Husak and Martins, 1995) and Mymarothecium viatorum(Boeger, Piasecki and Sobecka, 2002), commonly found in large quantities in farmed Piaractus mesopotamicus (Holmberg, 1887) in Brazil, were collected from three fish farms located in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. Morphological and molecular identification, scanning electron microscopy, histopathological and descriptive parameters data were performed. A total of 278 specimens of P. mesopotamicus were gathered from February 2008 and July 2010. Prevalence (P) and mean intensity of

Monogeneans are the parasites mostly found on the body surface and gills of fish and can cause large losses in farmed fish. Some studies demonstrate elevated parasitic levels causing hematological alterations. But few of them relate the effects of parasitism on the hematology and histopathology of native freshwater farmed fish. This study evaluated the host-parasite relationship in pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus) parasitized by the monogenean Anacanthorus penilabiatus. Hematological and parasitological assessments were obtained in 60 fish captured in a fish farm located in Dourados, State of Ma

Myxozoans of the family Myxobolidae are common parasites in fish. The diversity and ecology of the species of the genus Unicauda are poorly known, which hampers the understanding of the distribution and prevalence of this group of parasites. In the present study, cysts containing parasites whose morphology was consistent with the genus Unicauda were found in the circumorbital region of the ocular conjunctiva of the freshwater fish Moenkhausia grandisquamis Müller & Troschel, 1845 (Characiformes: Characidae) and Triportheus angulatus Spix & Agassiz, 1829 (Characiformes: Triportheidae). This study investigated the efficacy of Astrocaryum aculeatum fixed oil solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) on dactylogyridean parasites of Colossoma macropomum gills and effects on hematology and gill histology. The main fatty acid component of A. aculeatum oil was oleic acid (68.0%). Among the concentrations of A. aculeatum fixed oil SLNs tested (250-1000 mg/L), the fish tolerated only 250 mg/L, which was the concentration used in the consecutive five baths of 1 h per day. Two control groups were also used: one with myristic acid + Tween 80 and another with only water from the cultivation tank.

Adaptation to novel environments often involves the evolution of multiple morphological, physiological, and behavioral traits. One striking example of multi-trait evolution is the suite of traits that has evolved repeatedly in cave animals, including regression of eyes, loss of pigmentation, and enhancement of non-visual sensory systems.1,2 The Mexican tetra, Astyanax mexicanus, consists of fish that inhabit at least 30 caves in Mexico and ancestral-like surface fish that inhabit the rivers of Mexico and southern Texas.3 Cave A. mexicanus are interfertile with surface fish and have evolved a n

Understanding the phenotypic consequences of naturally occurring genetic changes, as well as their impact on fitness, is fundamental to understanding how organisms adapt to an environment. This is critical when genetic variants have pleiotropic effects, as determining how each phenotype impacted by a gene contributes to fitness is essential to understand how and why traits have evolved. Here, we characterized the effects of mutations in the oca2 gene, which underlie albinism and reductions of sleep in the blind Mexican cavefish Astyanax mexicanus, on larval prey capture. We found that when sur

The extrabulbar olfactory projections (EBOP) is a collection of nerve fibers that originate from primary olfactory receptor neurons. These fibers penetrate into the brain, bypassing the olfactory bulbs (OBs). While the presence of an EBOP has been well established in teleosts, here we morphologically characterize the EBOP structure in four species each with a different morphological relationship of OB with the ventral telencephalic area. Tract-tracing methods (carbocyanine DiI/DIA and biocytin) were used. FMRFamide immunoreactive nervus terminalis (NT) components were also visualized to define
