Chromosomal Instability and Origin of B Chromosomes in the Amazonian Glass Tetra Moenkhausia oligolepis (Günther, 1864) (Characiformes, Characidae).

B chromosomes occur in different species of the small characid fishes of the genus Moenkhausia. These supernumerary elements, that do not recombine with chromosomes of the standard A complement and follow their own evolutionary mechanism vary in number, morphology, and distribution. Here, we show karyotypic data of individuals of 2 populations of Moenkhausia oligolepis of the Brazilian Amazon (Pedro Correia and Taboquinha streams, Tocantins river basin), both with a diploid number of 50 chromosomes and karyotypic formula of 10m + 32sm + 8a. In addition to the normal complement, we also observe

Chromosomal characterization in two species of an Astyanax bimaculatus complex (Characidae, Characiformes) using different techniques of chromosome banding.

Astyanax has been the subject of extensive cytogenetic studies due to its wide karyotypic diversity. This genus comprises species complexes, namely groups of fish of difficult morphological differentiation, such as the bimaculatus complex, which includes the characids with a rounded humeral spot. Thence, the present study proposed to accomplish a cytogenetic characterization of two species of this complex: A. asuncionensis and A. altiparanae, aiming to find chromosomal markers that differentiate these species, as well as achieve a better understanding of the karyotype evolution in the genus. Water temperature modulates multidimensional plastic responses to water flow during the ontogeny of a neotropical fish (Astyanax lacustris, characiformes).

INTRODUCTION: Plastic phenotypes result from multidimensional developmental systems responding to distinct yet simultaneous environmental signals, which may differently affect the magnitude and directions of plastic responses.Concomitant environmental signals during development may result in dominant, synergistic, or even antagonistic phenotypic effects, so that a given condition may amplify or minimize plastic responses to other environmental stimuli. Knowledge on how external information shapes complex plastic phenotypes is essential to predict potential evolutionary trajectories driven by d

Mutilation on gill filaments of Piaractus brachypomus (Characiformes: Serrasalmidae) caused by Braga patagonica (Crustacea: Cymothoidae), in the Brazilian Amazon.

Fish aquaculture is one of the main food production sectors for the growing global human population and is currently one of the most profitable production activities. However, parasitic infestations have emerged as a significant factor influencing fish aquaculture production, negatively impacting the profitability of this food production activity. This study aimed to report the mutilation of pirapitinga Piaractus brachypomus gill filaments caused by a Cymothoidae parasite. In April 2022, Piaractus brachypomus were examined at a fish farm in Macapá, state of Amapá, Brazil. The host fish were an

Comparative esterase kinetics and hypoxia-induced, 4-hydroxynonenal-mediated regulation of carboxylesterase in three Neotropical Characiform fish.

The serine-hydrolase esterases-acetylcholinesterase (AChE), butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), and carboxylesterase (CarbE)-mediate xenobiotic detoxification and lipid metabolism, yet their comparative kinetics and regulatory mechanisms remain largely unknown in Neotropical fish. Here, we provide the first integrated kinetic and mechanistic characterization of AChE, BChE, and CarbE in the serum and liver of three ecologically and commercially important Characiform fish: curimbatá (Prochilodus lineatus), pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus), and piavussu (Leporinus macrocephalus). Helminth parasites of characiform fishes from farming systems in the states of Acre and Maranhão, Western Amazonia and Northeastern regions, Brazil.

Aquaculture has been recognized as one of the main solutions to the growing global food demand, as well as a significant resource for addressing the limitations imposed on wild fisheries. The most important fish species for Brazilian fish farming is Colossoma macropomum due to its zootechnical characteristics, economic and cultural importances. In cultivated systems, the presence of parasites can represent a major problem. Under these conditions, parasites of the phyla Acanthocephala and Platyhelminthes are commonly found parasitizing farmed fishes. This study aimed to investigate the helminth

Gonadotropin subunits of the characiform Astyanax altiparanae: Molecular characterization, spatiotemporal expression and their possible role on female reproductive dysfunction in captivity.

To better understand the endocrine control of reproduction in Characiformes and the reproductive dysfunctions that commonly occur in migratory fish of this order when kept in captivity, we chose Astyanax altiparanae, which has asynchronous ovarian development and multiple spawning events, as model species. From A. altiparanae pituitary total RNA, we cloned the full-length cDNAs coding for the follicle-stimulating hormone β subunit (fshb), the luteinizing hormone β subunit (lhb), and the common gonadotropin α subunit (gpha). All three sequences showed the highest degree of amino acid identity w
