Experimental infection of North American birds with the New York 1999 strain of West Nile virus.

To evaluate transmission dynamics, we exposed 25 bird species to West Nile virus (WNV) by infectious mosquito bite. We monitored viremia titers, clinical outcome, WNV shedding (cloacal and oral), seroconversion, virus persistence in organs, and susceptibility to oral and contact transmission. Passeriform and charadriiform birds were more reservoir competent (a derivation of viremia data) than other species tested. The five most competent species were passerines: Blue Jay (Cyanocitta cristata), Common Grackle (Quiscalus quiscula), House Finch (Carpodacus mexicanus), American Crow (Corvus brachy

A taxonomically harmonized global dataset of wild bird hosts for avian influenza virus surveillance.

Wild birds are key natural reservoirs and play a central role in the global spread of avian influenza viruses (AIVs). However, the absence of a standardized global list of wild bird hosts has limited comprehensive AIV risk monitoring and assessment within the One Health framework. Here, we generate a taxonomically harmonized dataset of AIV wild bird hosts, derived from 23,358 viral isolates of wild bird origin reported in the GISAID EpiFluTM database from 1973 to 2023. Host names were systematically extracted, validated, and harmonized to resolve reporting inconsistencies and unify taxonomy ac

Identifying Causative Agents of a Paretic Syndrome in Waterbirds in Southern Portugal.

Paretic and paralyzing syndromes affecting wild birds are widely described in the literature, with outbreaks showing an increase in frequency and intensity worldwide during recent years. In the Iberian Peninsula, a paretic clinical picture without known etiology affecting mostly gulls has been reported during the last few decades. This paretic syndrome (PS) affects waterbirds and is characterized by a set of signs of ascendent flaccid paralysis, dyspnea, and diarrhea at different levels of severity. This study presents the first macro-analysis of some potential etiological PS agents in wild bi

Heavy Rainfall, Sewer Overflows, and Salmonellosis in Black Skimmers (Rynchops niger).

Extreme weather events, particularly heavy rainfall, are occurring at greater frequency with climate change. Although adverse human health effects from heavy rainfall are often publicized, impacts to free-ranging wildlife populations are less well known. We first summarize documented associations of heavy rainfall on wildlife health. We then report a novel investigation of a salmonellosis outbreak in a colony of black skimmers (Rynchops niger) in Florida, USA. During June-September 2016, heavy rainfall resulted in the discharge of millions of gallons of untreated wastewater into the Tampa Bay

A Physiologically Based Oiling Model (PBOM) to Predict Thermoregulatory Response in Birds.

When birds are exposed to oil, their ability to thermoregulate is impaired as a result of damage to the insulative properties of their feathers. If an oiled bird is unable to maintain thermal homeostasis, hypothermia and death can follow rapidly. Physiological responses to oiling depend on several variables including environmental conditions (e.g., ambient air and water temperatures), life history of bird species (e.g., body size and habitat selection), and foraging strategies (e.g., divers, surface feeders, shorebirds). The most widely used approach to assess the effect of spilled oil on bird

Septic Arthritis and Osteomyelitis Caused by Chryseobacterium indologenes in a Mute Swan (Cygnus olor) and a Ring-Billed Gull (Larus delawarensis).

A 20-year-old female mute swan (Cygnus olor) originally in a flock of free-living swans on a Long Island, New York, lake, was presented for facial swelling and decreased appetite. An adult male ring-billed gull (Larus delawarensis) was also presented to the same wildlife rescue center for bilateral lameness of 1-week duration. Once referred for veterinary evaluation and care, both species were diagnosed with septic arthritis and osteomyelitis caused by Chryseobacterium indologenes and treated with orbifloxacin until complete recovery. Chryseobacterium indologenes is infrequently diagnosed as a

Zoonotic bacterial dynamics in two sympatric urban gull species within anthropized environments.

Zoonotic infections remain a major global health concern, with Salmonella spp. and Campylobacter spp. among the most frequently reported pathogens in the European Union. Understanding how wildlife behaviour influences the dispersal and dynamics of these bacteria is crucial for assessing transmission risks in anthropized environments. Here, we examined the role of two sympatric gulls with contrasting ecologies, Audouin's gull (Ichthyaetus audouinii) and the yellow-legged gull (Larus michahellis), as biovectors of zoonotic bacteria. We combined GPS tracking of adults (2023-2024) with feather sta

Spatiotemporal Dynamics of Blood Parasite Infections and Impacts on Avian Health and Reproduction.

Parasitic infections are ubiquitous in nature, but their consequences are often difficult to evaluate in wildlife. This is particularly the case for chronic infections for which fitness impacts can be subtle or confounded with other intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Infections by Babesia (Apicomplexa, Piroplasmidae) are widespread in wildlife, but little is known about their impacts on host health. Here, we evaluated the dynamics and possible fitness consequences of infection by Babesia sp. YLG, a recently described parasite infecting yellow-legged gulls (Larus michahellis). Using a qPCR assay

Innovative problem-solving in a threatened gull species, the Olrog's Gull (Larus atlanticus).

Innovation, a process that plays an important role in the ecology and evolution of species, is considered an expression of behavioral flexibility in animals. Here we analyzed innovative problem-solving ability and performance enhancement through learning in the Olrog's Gull (Larus atlanticus), under controlled processes and experimental conditions. Trials were undertaken with nine adult individuals captured at a highly urbanized coastal area of Argentina. Each individual was presented with a Plexiglas box that could be opened by pushing or pulling two lids, each lid leading to a separated food

Urinary paraplegia and William Withey Gull.

In 1833, Edward Stanley described the autopsy findings in seven men with paraplegia but no visible spinal cord abnormality. All had upper urinary tract infections. Stanley suggested that a nerve-transmitted input from the kidneys could suppress function in the spinal cord, causing paralysis. Others-principally Leroy d'Etiolles (1856) and Brown-Séquard (1859-1862)-expanded the concept to account for otherwise unexplained limb weakness (urinary or reflex paraplegia), and widened the range of culprit anatomical sites. Such interpretations continued until into the late-nineteenth century. In 1861,

Comparisons of host specificity in feather louse genera (Insecta: Phthiraptera: Philopteridae) parasitizing gulls (Aves: Laridae: Larus).

Data from gene sequences and morphological structures were collected for the gull feather lice, Saemundssonia lari, Quadraceps punctatus, and Q. ornatus, parasitizing Larus crassirostris and L. schistisagus. Saemundssonia lari was collected from both gull species, and no detectable morphological and genetic differences were found between lice collected from the two different hosts. In contrast, Q. punctatus was only collected from L. crassirostris, whereas Q. ornatus was only collected from L. schistisagus. The two Quadraceps species were genetically highly divergent, and body-size differences

Mathematical modeling of appendicular bone growth in glaucous-winged gulls.

Development of locomotor activity is crucial in tetrapods. In birds, this development leads to different functions for hindlimbs and forelimbs. The emergence of walking and flying as very different complex behavior patterns only weeks after hatching provides an interesting case study in animal development. We measured the diaphyseal lengths and midshaft diameters of three wing bones (humerus, ulna, and carpometacarpus) and three leg bones (femur, tibiotarsus, and tarsometatarsus) of 79 juvenile (ages 0-42 days) and 13 adult glaucous-winged gulls (Larus glaucescens), a semiprecocial species. Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) do not accumulate with age or affect population survival in ruddy turnstone (Arenaria interpres).

Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) may threaten wildlife due to their high environmental persistence, toxicity potential and potential to bioaccumulate. Bioaccumulation may be particularly profound in long-lived animals inhabiting higher trophic niches. To date, there is a paucity of data on PFAS bioaccumulation potential in individual wild birds over their lifetime. In this study, we analysed within-individual PFAS contamination in a declining long-distance migratory shorebird, the ruddy turnstone (Arenaria interpres), and the variation in PFAS contamination with age by repeatedly sa

Extreme snowstorms lead to large-scale seabird breeding failures in Antarctica.

Climate change increases the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events that negatively impact wildlife, from individuals to whole ecosystems1. In polar environments, such events include heat waves2, anomalous sea ice concentrations3 and storms4. Polar seabirds are adapted to withstand harsh conditions, and although extreme weather events affect their breeding success and other demographic rates, they are thought to affect only a part of the population. Complete breeding failure of an entire population due to extreme environmental conditions is rarely observed5. Here we report how excep

Black guillemot ecology in relation to tidal stream energy generation: An evaluation of current knowledge and information gaps.

The black guillemot Cepphus grylle has been identified as a species likely to interact with marine renewable energy devices, specifically tidal turbines, with the potential to experience negative impacts. This likelihood is primarily based on the species being a diving seabird, and an inshore, benthic forager often associating with tidal streams. These behavioural properties may bring them into contact with turbine blades, or make them susceptible to alterations to tidal current speed, and/or changes in benthic habitat structure. We examine the knowledge currently available to assess the poten

Migratory Wild Birds as Potential Long-Distance Transmitters of Toxoplasma gondii Infection.

Toxoplasma gondii is a worldwide distributed zoonotic protozoan capable of infecting a wide range of mammals (including humans) and birds as intermediate hosts. Migratory wild birds, through interconnecting countries along their flyways, can play a role in the spatial spread of T. gondii and could contribute to its sylvatic cycle. Additionally, hunted wild birds used for meat consumption could represent a further source of human infection. To determine the presence of T. gondii in wild birds, a total of 50 individuals belonging to the Anseriformes and Charadriiformes orders were sampled during

An Automated Population Monitoring Framework for Larus ridibundus in Kunming City Based on Improved YOLOv8 and ByteTrack.

The Larus ridibundus (L. ridibundus), a prominent part of Kunming's landscape, attracts many tourists and boosts the local tourism industry. Effective population monitoring of this species matters for wetland environment evaluation, biodiversity conservation, and ecological civilization construction. Currently, L. ridibundus population statistics mainly rely on manual methods, which are labor-intensive and inefficient. To overcome these limits, we propose a deep learning (DL) framework. It automatically recognizes and counts L. ridibundus by combining CDSP2-YOLOv8n with ByteTrack, aiming to ef

Genetic Characterization and Phylogeographic Analysis of the First H13N6 Avian Influenza Virus Isolated from Vega Gull in South Korea.

Avian influenza virus (AIV) is a pathogen with zoonotic and pandemic potential. Migratory birds are natural reservoirs of all known subtypes of AIVs, except for H17N10 and H18N11, and they have been implicated in previous highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreaks worldwide. This study identified and characterized the first isolate of the H13N6 subtype from a Vega gull (Larus vegae mongolicus) in South Korea. The amino acid sequence of hemagglutinin gene showed a low pathogenic AIV subtype and various amino acid substitutions were found in the sequence compared to the reference sequence and k
