Individuals with Charles Bonnet syndrome (CBS) typically have severe visual loss and experience visual hallucinations yet have no psychiatric disease. Visual impairment often is due to end-stage glaucoma or macular degeneration. We report 3 cases of CBS in patients who underwent an oculoplastic surgical procedure. One patient experienced binocular visual distortion due to excessive topical ophthalmic ointment, and 2 patients experienced monocular visual impairment from patching. Visual hallucinations resolved once vision returned to baseline. We highlight the possibility of transient CBS in po

Descriptions of hallucinatory phenomena have figured prominently since the beginning of recorded history. Jean Etienne Esquirol (1772-1840) is usually credited for having introduced the term in 1817, differentiating between hallucinations and illusions. Both are wrong perceptions, but in illusions, an external stimulus is always present whereas hallucinations are perceptions that occur in the absence of corresponding sensory stimuli. They occur in a variety of conditions but more often in the mentally ill, especially in schizophrenia where hallucinations, particularly auditory hallucinations r

A 69-year-old male experienced monocular formed visual hallucinations after occlusion of the right eye following resection of eyelid basal cell carcinoma and reconstruction with a Hughes procedure (tarsoconjunctival flap). His symptoms included recurrent, well-defined, organized, complex, formed images of small children playing in the snow. These visual phenomena occurred only in the occluded eye, began several hours after surgery, and recurred intermittently several times daily for 4 days, lasting several minutes with each occurrence. The patient retained insight into the false nature of the

Charles Bonnet syndrome (CBS) is a rare condition that encompasses three clinical features: complex visual hallucinations, ocular pathology causing visual deterioration, and preserved cognitive status. Common associated ocular pathologies include age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, and cataracts. Several theories have been proposed to try to explain the visual hallucinations. However, the pathophysiology remains poorly understood, and treatment is largely based on anecdotal data. The lack of awareness of CBS among medical professionals often leads to inappropriate diagnosis and medicat

Charles Bonnet syndrome (CBS) is an under-recognized and commonly misdiagnosed condition characterized by the presence of visual hallucinations that psychologically normal people acknowledge as being unreal. It is commonly associated with ocular pathology and usually observed in elderly individuals with visual impairment. The exact etiology of CBS is unknown; however, the presentation of hallucinations is believed to be a result of functional deterioration of the central and peripheral nervous systems. Eradication of hallucinations and recurrent episodes has been seen with the use of neurolept

Charles Bonnet (1720-1792) was an eminent naturalist and philosopher whose contributions to botany and philosophy were highly regarded and honored by his contemporaries in the scientific community of his era in France and England. In1760 he first described and analyzed formed visual hallucinations experienced by his grandfather. The syndrome was named after Bonnet in 1937 by George de Mosier, another native of Geneva, Switzerland.

The Charles Bonnet syndrome is a condition in which individuals experience complex visual hallucinations without evident psychopathology or disturbance of normal consciousness. Although it can affect people of any age, it is more frequent among the elderly. It occurs mostly in people with damaged sight, as a result of peripheral eye pathology or pathology within the brain. A common definition of the syndrome is, however, not yet available nor has its pathophysiology been elucidated. This report concerns a 72-year-old widow who was practically blind after a cataract operation on both eyes ten y

The Charles Bonnet syndrome is a condition in which individuals experience complex visual hallucinations without demonstrable psychopathology or disturbance of normal consciousness. An analysis of the sixty-four cases described in the literature reveals that the syndrome can occur at any age though it is more common in elderly people. Reduction in vision, due to peripheral eye pathology as well as pathology within the brain, is associated with the syndrome. Individual hallucinatory episodes can last from a few seconds to most of the day. Episodes can occur for periods of time ranging from days

Loss of foveal vision with sparing of peripheral vision, as in macular degeneration, is often associated with visual hallucinations: it has been suggested that these occur because deafferentation of neurons in regions of visual cortex results in local neuronal hyperexcitability, and new evidence supports this hypothesis.

The Charles Bonnet syndrome (CBS) refers to lucid and complex visual hallucinations in cognitively normal patients with acquired vision loss. It can be associated with any type of vision loss including that related to macular degeneration, corneal disease, diabetic retinopathy, and occipital infarct. Neurosarcoidosis, a multi-systemic inflammatory granulomatous disease affecting both the central and peripheral nervous systems, is rarely associated with CBS. We report a patient with biopsy-confirmed neurosarcoidosis who experienced visual hallucinations following the development of a right seve

Charles Bonnet syndrome describes visual field or acuity loss with complex hallucinations. This typically occurs in the elderly with preexisting visual impairment. We describe a patient who presented to the emergency department with acute hemianopsia and intermittent complex hallucinations. A 57-year-old man was referred for visual field loss and hallucinations. Chief complaint was “seeing little heads of people” and a right-sided visual loss. The patient was alert, oriented, and able to repeat and name and had fluent speech. On cranial nerve examination, he had 20/20 visual acuity and right h

PURPOSE: Charles Bonnet syndrome plus is an exceedingly rare variant of this disorder. The variant has been described in patients with sight impairment and severe hypoacusis, and is usually characterized by complex visual and auditory--musical--hallucinations that the patients recognize as unreal.
METHOD: Case report.
RESULTS: A 75-year-old woman diagnosed with Usher syndrome presented with visual acuity of light perception in both eyes, which did not improve with the use of a pinhole occluder. She also had coptosis in right ear and severe hypoacusis in left ear, confirmed through audiometry

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to report a case of Charles Bonnet syndrome secondary to eye patching following eyelid reconstruction with an unusually acute onset.
METHOD: An observational case report was conducted.
RESULTS: The patient reported complex visual hallucinations that started less than 10 minutes after patching of her right eye (the left eye had poor vision from previous trauma). The patch was removed after 2 days, and the hallucinations gradually stopped over the subsequent 2 days.
CONCLUSION: This case of Charles Bonnet syndrome describes an unusually acute onset of hall

Charles Bonnet first described visual hallucinations in a ground of visual deprivation in the 18th century. In this paper, two case reports with the syndrome are presented (female 83 years old, male 68 years old) along with a short literature review. The distinction of the syndrome from other psychiatric disorders (delirium, dementia), where visual hallucinations are also present, demands the presence of the diagnostical triad: visual hallucinations, visual impairment, intact cognitive status. The hallucinations are rich in colors and tension, people usually have the "leading roles" and patien

A 31-year-old man Charles Bonnet syndrome is a condition usually seen in the visually-impaired elderly, causing complex visual hallucinations in the absence of any delirium, dementia or psychiatric illness. We report an elderly man, with blindness in one eye and a cataract in the other, from the Iban tribe, which is indigenous to the island of Borneo. He presented with a three-week history of vivid hallucinations of burglars intruding on his living quarters in the longhouse where he lived.

BACKGROUND: Charles Bonnet syndrome (CBS) is an under-recognized and under-reported disorder that involves visual hallucinations in visually impaired individuals. These patients have intact cognition, do not have hallucinations in any other sensory modalities, and retain insight into the unreal nature of their hallucinations.
CASE REPORTS: Two case reports are presented. Case 1 is a 79-year-old man who presented with a 6-month history of hallucinations. Case 2 is an 86-year-old man who presented with a 2-month history of hallucinations. Both patients are legally blind from age-related macular

Charles Bonnet Syndrome (CBS) is characterized by complex formed and recurrent visual hallucinations in psychologically normal people, and is often associated with eye pathology. Many psychiatrists have taken an interest in CBS because this syndrome could provide clues to the mechanisms underlying visual hallucinations. In the present paper, we review previous neuroimaging studies in patients with CBS and summarize the results of these studies. There could be a fundamental dysfunction in the primary and secondary visual cortices in some patients with CBS, and transient cortical activation occu
