Health risk assessment for multimedia exposure of formaldehyde emitted by chemical accident.

This study was conducted to provide basic data for chemical accident response by assessing the health risks of residents living near a chemical accident site due to long-term exposure. The study considered the temporal concentration changes of the leaked chemical (i.e., its behavior in the environment and dilution) until its extinction. A virtual chemical accident was assumed, in which 40 t of formaldehyde was accidentally discharged for 1 h in Ulsan Metropolitan City, Korea. Formaldehyde concentrations over time in each environmental medium after the accident were calculated using a multimedi

Engaging stakeholders through social media and emergent organizations: The West Virginia Water Crisis Recovery as a case study.

The West Virginia water contamination crisis began on the morning of January 9, 2014, and left approximately 300,000 customers of the West Virginia American Water Company unable to use the water in their homes for any purpose other than flushing their toilets. Given the lack of appropriate response from the established organizations involved, many emergent organizations formed to help fill unmet informational and physical needs of the affected population. Crisis researchers have observed these ephemeral organizations for decades, but the recent proliferation of information communication techno

Identifying the known and unknown health hazard information for chemical disasters: a phased scoping review of the East Palestine, Ohio train derailment.

INTRODUCTION: In February 2023, people residing in the village of East Palestine (EP, Ohio, USA) and surrounding areas were exposed to toxic chemicals from a Norfolk Southern Railway train derailment and subsequent vent and burn. OBJECTIVE: To identify known health hazards and evidence gaps from these chemicals to inform disaster-response research. METHODS: We conducted a rapid phased literature scoping review. In Phase 1, we summarized major conclusions from eight authoritative sources across ~15 health hazard categories for 22 chemicals potentially related to the train derailment and respo

Petroleum and hazardous chemical spills in Newark Bay, New Jersey, USA from 1982 to 1991.

Newark Bay, New Jersey, is particularly vulnerable to ecological damage from petroleum and chemical spills, as a result of the enclosed nature and shallow depth of the bay, the high frequency of shipping traffic, and the numerous chemical and petroleum transfer terminals located alongs its shores. To evaluate the potential impacts to the natural resources of this coastal estuarine ecosystem, chemical and petroleum accidents reported to the US Coast Guard (USCG) between 1982 and 1991 were compiled to determine the frequency and volume of these incidents in Newark Bay and in each of its major tr

Potential consequences of nitric oxide release: An improved model informing worker safety.

Both nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) gasses are toxic to humans but are commonly found in industrial settings such as semiconductor manufacturing sites. Due to the spontaneous oxidation of NO to NO2 under ambient conditions, individuals working with NO may in fact be exposed to both gasses in the case of an accidental release. Unfortunately, most safety materials provided to NO users do not address the potential for associated NO2 toxicity, and, until now, models developed to predict health consequences following a release of NO have not appropriately considered the oxidation kine

Lessons learned from hazardous chemical incidents--Louisiana Hazardous Substances Emergency Events Surveillance (HSEES) system.

Since 2001, the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals (LDHH) has participated in the Hazardous Substances Emergency Events Surveillance (HSEES) system. In 2001, there were 815 events qualified for HSEES surveillance. Data for each event was gathered and analyzed. During these hazardous substances events, there were 1164 chemicals released resulting in injuries to 63 people, most with respiratory system irritation. Even though more people were injured in fixed-facility events, injuries were more likely to result from transportation-related events. The quantity and frequency of hazardous

Analysis of hazardous material releases due to natural hazards in the United States.

Natural hazards were the cause of approximately 16,600 hazardous material (hazmat) releases reported to the National Response Center (NRC) between 1990 and 2008-three per cent of all reported hazmat releases. Rain-induced releases were most numerous (26 per cent of the total), followed by those associated with hurricanes (20 per cent), many of which resulted from major episodes in 2005 and 2008. Winds, storms or other weather-related phenomena were responsible for another 25 per cent of hazmat releases. Large releases were most frequently due to major natural disasters. For instance, hurricane

Simulation of a Hazardous and Noxious Substances (HNS) spill in the marine environment: lethal and sublethal effects of acrylonitrile to the European seabass.

Despite the extensive maritime transportation of Hazardous and Noxious Substances (HNS), there is a current lack of knowledge on the effects posed by HNS spills on the marine biota. Among the HNS identified as priority, acrylonitrile was selected to conduct ecotoxicological assays. We assessed the acute and subletal effects of acrylonitrile in seabass, followed by a recovery phase to simulate the conditions of a spill incident. The work aimed at testing a broad range of biological responses induced by acrylonitrile. Sublethal exposure to the highest two doses increased the fish mortality rate

Chromium isotopes tracking the resurgence of hexavalent chromium contamination in a past-contaminated area in the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, northern Italy.

The origin of a resurgent hexavalent chromium contamination in groundwater from a phreatic aquifer in the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region plain was investigated by chromium isotopic systematics. The area underwent a severe Cr(VI) contamination by industrial effluents in 1997, when Cr(VI) concentration in groundwater reached 4500 µg/L. In subsequent years the contamination naturally attenuated, totally disappearing in 2003. A renewal of water contamination was observed in 2008, Cr(VI) reaching 1560 µg/L. The δ53Cr value in groundwater and extracts from sediments was measured in 2009-2011, and it r

Prioritizing Chemical Candidates from Non-targeted Analysis Using Metadata, Spectral Similarity, and Hazard Scoring within INTERPRET NTA.

New approach methodologies like non-targeted analysis (NTA) are increasingly relevant for identifying and monitoring emerging contaminants. Utilizing high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), NTA methods can detect and annotate chemicals without prior knowledge. Yet, NTA results often have associated uncertainties owing, in part, to a lack of standardized methods. To address this challenge, the US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) developed the Interface for Processing, Reviewing, and Translating NTA data ("INTERPRET NTA") to support NTA research within its Office of Research and Develo

Mechanistic insights into volatile ruthenium tetroxide formation during evaporation-to-dryness accidents of high-level liquid waste.

Volatile ruthenium tetroxide (RuO4) formed during evaporation-to-dryness accidents (EDA) of high-level liquid waste (HLLW) combines high chemical toxicity with radiotoxicity from isotopes such as 103Ru and 106Ru, making it a primary hazard in nuclear-fuel reprocessing. This study experimentally elucidates the mechanisms governing RuO4 formation while testing the validity of the pragmatic nitrosyl-ruthenium ([RuNO]) surrogate model, an experimental model that assumes Ru in HLLW exists as [RuNO], and evaluates gaseous Ru release using nitric acid solutions of [RuNO], commonly used in RuO4 releas

Mercury, methylmercury, and selenium in blood of bird species from Doñana National Park (Southwestern Spain) after a mining accident.

Total mercury (Hg), monomethylmercury (MeHg), and selenium (Se) were determined in blood of 11 bird species living in Doñana National Park (DNP, Southwestern Spain) and the surrounding area in 1999 and 2000 after a mine spill accident. The total Hg contents found varied from 1.00 to 587 ng/mL, with an MeHg percentage higher than 80 %, except in mallard species. In all the cases, the concentrations found were below the threshold of high risk for the bird populations. The parameters which most affected the accumulation of Hg and MeHg in the birds studied were, first, species, or trophic position

Evaluation and analysis of volatile organic compounds and formaldehyde emission of building products in accordance with legal standards: A statistical experimental study.

Building materials have been developed mainly for thermal performance, strength, low energy consumption, and aesthetics. Consequently, large amounts of chemicals have been added to building products, resulting in the release of abundant pollutants that adversely affect human health. In particular, pollutants from the materials used to build modern dwellings can cause sick house syndrome, which leads to health resilience problems and diseases. In this study, more than 100 investigations were conducted annually from 2004 to 2017 by using the 20 L small chamber method to analyze the contents of f

A Safe and Just Earth by Design.

Movement to a safe and just Earth system space for novel entities depends on the control of their quantities and/or qualities. Concerns about the adverse effects of such entities emphasize the momentous challenge of managing production and release volumes, but comparatively little attention has been paid to the control of novel entity quality (i.e., hazards). While control over chemical quantities may reduce exposure, if the inherent hazard has not been reduced or eliminated, even small quantities of hazardous substances can result in significant harm to the Earth system, people, and other for

Ocular effects of exposure to industrial chemicals: clinical management and proteomic approaches to damage assessment.

Industrial chemicals in a variety of applications are often found in highly populated areas and their presence carries risks. The threat of serious consequences from inadvertent or intentional events involving hazardous chemicals is a possibility. Extremism and/or other illicit activities pose environmental threats from chemical exposures. We present here a review of the threat of ocular injury in small-and large-scale chemical releases and discuss mechanisms of damage and repair to the eyes. The emerging field of proteomics has been described in relation to its potential role in the assessmen

Characteristics of hazardous material spills from reporting systems in California.

Data on hazardous material releases that occurred between January 1, 1982 and September 30, 1983 in California were obtained from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and the US Department of Transportation (DOT). The majority of incidents involved highway transport of hazardous materials, although some information was available on air, rail, and stationary facility releases. Vehicle accidents and failure of or damage to the container were the most frequent causes of releases. Proportionately more hazardous materials incidents occurred in early summer than at other times of the year, during wee

Ruthenium in the nuclear fuel cycle and the environment: Behavior, release, and hazard relevance.

Ruthenium isotopes constitute a distinctive class of fission products whose radiological relevance is governed less by their inventory than by chemical speciation and release conditions. Under normal reactor operation, ruthenium is largely retained in metallic form together with other platinum group metals and represents a negligible environmental hazard. However, under high-temperature and oxidizing conditions encountered during severe reactor accidents, fuel reprocessing, or loss-of-cooling scenarios in high-level liquid waste storage systems, ruthenium can be converted into volatile oxides,
