Vertical transmission of Salmonella Enteritidis with heterogeneous antimicrobial resistance from breeding chickens to commercial chickens in China.

Human salmonellosis caused by the consumption of eggs and chicken meat contaminated with Salmonella Enteritidis has become a continuing public health concern worldwide. In this study we adopted whole genome sequencing (WGS) to determine the genetic relationship and antimicrobial resistance of S. enterica strains isolated from a poultry breeding enterprise that consists of one breeding chicken farm, one egg hatchery and one commercial chicken farm. A total of 148 S. enterica including 147 S. Enteritidis strains were isolated from 2100 fecal swab samples, with 16 (5.3 %, 16/300) from breeding ch

[Staphylococcus aureus infection in chickens in industrialized poultry units. 1. Manifestations of Staphylococcus aureus infection in chickens].

Staphylococcus aureus infection has become an increasingly grave problem in industrialised poultry farming. This first communication in a series of publications on highly involved studies and experiments describes manifestations of the most common staphylococcal infections in fowl, including synovitis with arthritis, osteomyelitis, dermatitis, endocarditis, septicaemia, wound infection, and ophthalmitis. Reference in greater detail is made to manifestations with more important economic consequences, such as synovitis with arthritis, osteomyelitis, and dermatitis. Their frequency, dependence on

Formulation and Quality Evaluation of Chicken Nuggets Supplemented with Beef and Chicken Livers.

This study explores the potential of utilizing meat byproducts, specifically chicken and beef liver, to enhance the nutritional value of processed foods like chicken nuggets. Proximate analysis was conducted on the livers, including moisture, ash, fat, and protein content, and degradation potential was observed. Antioxidant potential was analyzed through 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). The total phenolic content (TPC), oxidative stability through peroxide value (POV), and free fatty acid (FFA) were performed to evaluate quality changes during seven-day storage. The radical scavenging act

Synthesis and Metabolism of Nitric Oxide (NO) in Chicken Embryos and in the Blood of Adult Chicken.

In chicken embryos, nitric oxide (NO) is accumulated in the pool of NO donors: S-nitrosothiols, nitrosyl-iron complexes, high-molecular-weight nitro-compounds. Oxidation of NO to nitrate occurs with different intensity in the embryos of different chicken breeds. In some embryos, NO donors accumulate almost without oxidation. Stable concentration of NO donors and nitrate in the blood of adult chicken is a result of dynamic equilibrium between NO synthesis and elimination (oxidation, consumption by other tissues, and excretion). As NO oxidation occurs mainly not in the blood, but in other tissue

Single nucleotide polymorphisms in the chicken Lmbr1 gene are associated with chicken polydactyly.

Polydactyly is a common malformation of vertebrate limbs. Preaxial polydactyly (PPD) has been mapped in human, mouse and chicken to the syntenic region of human 7q36. Lmbr1 was thought as the critical candidate gene for human and mouse PPD. To understand the molecular mechanism underlying chicken polydactyly, we have cloned the open reading frame (ORF) of chicken Lmbr1, which contains 1467 nucleotides. Within this ORF, we found one short and one long splice forms. The short splice form has a complete deletion of exon 4. Six cSNPs were found in the chicken ORF, and two of these cSNPs, G797A and

Orthoreovirus avis in asymptomatic broiler chickens.

Orthoreovirus avis (previously named Avian othoreoviruses; ARVs) cause significant economic losses in the global poultry industry. Disease control is compromised by the emergence of variants that escape vaccine-induced immunity. The development of more effective vaccines requires knowledge of circulating strains. One hundred and twenty-four feces from asymptomatic and unvaccinated broiler chickens from two commercial poultry farms in the states of Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo, southeastern Brazil, were examined with the aim of detecting, genotyping and characterizing the σC protein of the

Chickens have excellent sound localization ability.

The mechanisms of sound localization are actively debated, especially which cues are predominately used and why. Our study provides behavioural data in chickens (Gallus gallus) and relates these to estimates of the perceived physical cues. Sound localization acuity was quantified as the minimum audible angle (MAA) in azimuth. Pure-tone MAA was 12.3, 9.3, 8.9 and 14.5 deg for frequencies of 500, 1000, 2000 and 4000 Hz, respectively. Broadband-noise MAA was 12.2 deg, which indicates excellent behavioural acuity. We determined 'external cues' from head-related transfer functions of chickens. Thes

Gangrenous dermatitis in chickens and turkeys.

Gangrenous dermatitis (GD) is a disease of chickens and turkeys that causes severe economic losses in the poultry industry worldwide. Clostridium septicum, Clostridium perfringens type A, and occasionally Clostridium sordellii are considered the main causes of GD, although Staphylococcus aureus and other aerobic bacteria may also be involved in some cases of the disease. GD has become one of the most significant diseases of commercial turkeys in the United States. Several infectious and/or environmental immunosuppressive factors can predispose to GD. Skin lesions are considered to be the main

Screening for Salmonella in backyard chickens.

Salmonellosis is a significant zoonotic disease which has a considerable economic impact on the egg layer industry. There is limited information about the prevalence of Salmonella spp. in backyard chickens. The current study was conducted to determine the prevalence of Salmonella in backyard chickens, and the associated virulence of any serovars identified. Hundred and fifteen pooled samples from 30 backyard flocks in South Australia were screened. Four flocks tested positive for Salmonella spp. The overall Salmonella isolation rate in the current study was 10.4%. The estimated prevalence at i

Campylobacter jejuni infection in broiler chickens.

Day-old, straight-run broiler chickens were procured from a hatchery located in the Pacific Northwest. The chickens were subdivided individually into nine groups of 20 chickens. The chickens were tagged, housed in isolation chambers on wire, fed commercial broiler feed, and given water ad libitum. Three isolates of Campylobacter jejuni of poultry origin and one of human origin were tested in this study. Various C. jejuni cultures were inoculated into 9-day-old chickens by crop gavage. Four groups of 20 chickens were inoculated at a dose level of 0.5 ml of 1 x 10(2) colony-forming units (CFU)/m

Toxicoinfectious botulism in commercial caponized chickens.

During the summer of 2003, two flocks of commercial broiler chickens experienced unusually high death losses following caponizing at 3 wk of age and again between 8 and 14 wk of age. In September, fifteen 11-wk-old live capons were submitted to the Iowa State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory for assistance. In both flocks, the second episode of elevated mortality was associated with incoordination, flaccid paralysis of leg, wing, and neck muscles, a recumbent body posture characterized by neck extension, and diarrhea. No macroscopic or microscopic lesions were detected in affected c

Primary thoracolumbar scoliosis in pinealectomized chickens.

STUDY DESIGN: This study examines the gross anatomic changes in the chicken spine after pinealectomy and was undertaken because initial observation suggested that the pattern of curve development appears to be different from that reported in the literature. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the spinal deformity in chickens after pinealectomy. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The most common curve pattern seen after pinealectomy in chickens is said to be thoracic curves with structural changes and rotation. This is based largely on radiographic observations and forms the basis of the claim that chicken a

Polytetrafluoroethylene gas intoxication in broiler chickens.

A poultry research facility that housed 2400 Peterson x Hubbard cross broilers (48 pens of 50 chicks each) experienced 4% mortality within 24 hr of chick placement. Mortality started within 4 hr of placement, and within 72 hr, cumulative mortality had reached 52%. Mild dyspnea was the only clinical sign noted in some chicks prior to death. The primary gross lesion noted in the chicks submitted was moderate to severe pulmonary congestion. The lungs of four of these chicks sank in formalin, and blood-tinged fluid was noted in the mouth and nares of two chicks. The microscopic lesions noted in th

Experimentally induced beriberi polyneuropathy in chickens.

Chickens fed with the same composition of diet as our low income beriberi polyneuropathic patients, developed clinical symptoms of thiamine deficiency in 22.3 +/- 6.3 days. There appeared to be a body store of thiamine which is utilized during a period of deficient intake. Haemoglobin content and serum albumin did not change appreciably during thiamine deficiency. The blood thiamine content was low and the thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP) effect increased to more than 25 percent during the development of the beriberi polyneuropathy, which resumed after one week on thiamine tetrahydrofurfuryl disul

Listeria monocytogenes colonization of broiler chickens.

In three trials, a total of 108 broiler chickens were unchallenged or challenged orally with either 10(2) or 10(6) cells of Listeria monocytogenes at 1, 14, or 35 days of age. The birds were kept in separate wire-floored brooders and growout batteries, fed unmedicated broiler-starter rations ad libitum, and killed 7 days postchallenge. The ceca, duodenum, spleen, liver (including gall bladder), and a cloacal swab were sampled from each bird and were analyzed for the presence of L. monocytogenes. In Trial 1, L. monocytogenes was recovered on all sampling days, but most frequently from birds cha

Experimental biliary cryptosporidiosis in broiler chickens.

Biliary cryptosporidiosis was studied by inoculation of 2 x 10(5) Cryptosporidium baileyi oocysts (AU-B1 isolate) into the gall bladders of ten 6-day-old broiler chickens. Clinical signs of disease were not seen. Three of the 10 chickens developed biliary tract infections, based on histologic examination of tissue sections. Lesions seen in the gall bladders of these birds included epithelial hyperplasia and infiltration of the underlying connective tissue with mononuclear leukocytes. One of these birds also had involvement of the hepatic bile ducts. The bile ducts were mildly dilated and conta

Acute isovolemic anemia in anesthetized chickens.

Acute isovolemic anemia was produced in anesthetized chickens by serial exchanges of 6% dextran 70 equal to 1% of body weight to quantitate cardiovascular and metabolic parameters. When hematocrit (Hct) and hemoglobin (Hb) levels were reduced by 50% (from 33.3 to 16.3 vol %, and from 10.3 to 5.4 g/100 g, respectively, P less than 0.001), tissue oxygen delivery was maintained by increases in cardiac output (CO), stroke volume (SV), oxygen extraction, and reduced total peripheral resistance (TPR). Heart rate, right atrial pressure, and oxygen consumption (Vo2) were unchanged. Further reductions
