Parents' Feelings Towards Their Adoptive and Non-Adoptive Children.

In the current study, we examined parent gender differences in feelings (negativity and positivity) and perceptions of child behavioural and emotional problems in adoptive and biological parent-child dyads. In a sample of 85 families, we used a novel within-family adoption design in which one child was adopted and one child was a biological child of the couple, and tested whether the links between parent feelings and child maladjustment included effects of passive gene-environment correlation. Parents reported more negativity and less positivity as well as higher levels of externalizing behavi

Act partially amending the Civil Code and other laws, 26 September 1987.

This Act amends the adoption provisions of the Japanese Civil Code to introduce special adoption. The following are the major principles governing special adoption: 1) special adoption occurs when decreed by the family court in circumstances where it is considered particularly necessary (e.g., when parental care is difficult or inadequate); 2) the adoptive parents should, in general, be married and be at least 25 years old; 3) the child adopted should be under six years old, but can be up to eight years old if the prospective adopters have taken care of it before it reached the age of six; 4)

Post-adoption perinatal grief and parenting future children in the home: The moderating roles of social support and parental substance use.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was twofold: (a) to examine the impact of birth mother's post-adoption perinatal grief - stemming from ambiguous loss - on their perceptions of their parenting years later and the relationship quality they have with the children who they raise; and (b) to evaluate the potential contribution that social support and substance use severity play in moderating the impact of post-adoption perinatal grief. DESIGN: We applied an adoption design that consisted of a sample of birth mothers (N = 53) who placed one child for adoption at birth and parented another child in

[Adoption and its psychiatric aspects].

Adoption has changed in history, in different cultures, in law, in its goals, its functions, its modalities. The study of the adoptive condition is worthwhile for theoretical research (psychopathology, genetics, etc.) and for clinical practice (prevention, selection and motivation analysis of adopting parents). It is dangerous and too simple to explain pathology by adoption. However, there is a specific psychopathology of adoptees : 1. by maternal deprivation and abandonnement pathology (more frequent and more important), 2. by the adoptive situation condition itself. We review some hypotheses

The role of child negative emotionality in parenting and child adjustment: Gene-environment interplay.

BACKGROUND: Evocative gene-environment correlation (rGE) describes a process through which children's heritable characteristics influence their rearing environments. The current study examined whether heritable influences on parenting and children's behavioural outcomes operate through child negative emotionality. METHOD: Using data from the Early Growth and Development Study, we examined associations among adoptive parent reports of child anger and sadness at 4.5 years, adoptive parents' hostile and warm parenting at 6 years and child behavioural problems and social competence at age 7. Effects of adoptive status on evaluations of children.

The authors examined whether being adopted or semi-adopted (born of artificial insemination with donor sperm and genetically linked to the mother but not to the social father) is a stigmatizing attribute affecting evaluations made of a child, and whether the gender of the rater moderates the effects of adoptive status on evaluations of children. Participants included 129 undergraduate students from the United States who were presented with written scenarios describing a child's adoptive status. They were asked to evaluate the child on a number of attributes. Results showed that adoptive status

General and specific predictors of nicotine and alcohol dependence in early adulthood: genetic and environmental influences.

OBJECTIVE: This study builds on previous work delineating a hierarchical model of family environmental risk in relation to a hierarchical model of externalizing disorders (EXTs) by evaluating for gene-environment interplay in these relationships. The associations between parent-child relationship quality (conflict, bonding, and management) and substance-specific adolescent family environments (parental/sibling tobacco/alcohol use) in relation to young adult EXTs (age ∼22 years nicotine, alcohol, and other drug dependence; antisocial and risky sexual behavior) were evaluated. Self-Reported Current Practices in Child Forensic Interviewing: Training, Tools, and Pre-Interview Preparation.

In child sexual abuse investigations, forensic interviewers within the Child Advocacy Center (CAC) model serve as neutral fact-finders for a team of professionals tasked with investigating and intervening in cases of alleged child sexual abuse. Although empirical evidence has led to the development of best-practice techniques and protocols, there is currently no universally adopted protocol in the field. The present research gathered detailed information from a national sample of real-world child forensic interviewers about their training and current practices, with a specific focus on assessi

Intercountry adoption of Latin American children: the importance of early bilingual/bicultural services.

Because of major worldwide demographic changes, many Latin American children are frequently adopted in the U.S. This article presents an overview of the historical and contemporary circumstances and controversies surrounding intercountry adoptions (ICAs), and a review of possible risk factors for later child or adolescent maladjustment. Although a number of follow-up studies indicate a 70-80% positive outcome, some ICAs end in painful family-child disruptions. There is, therefore, a growing need for bilingual/bicultural mental health services to improve the initial adjustment process and to fa

Embryo donation parents' attitudes towards donors: comparison with adoption.

BACKGROUND: Embryo donation produces a family structure where neither rearing parent is genetically related to the child, as in adoption. It is not known how embryo donation parents view the donors compared with how adoptive parents view the birth parents. METHODS: 21 couples with an embryo donation child aged 2-5 years were compared with 28 couples with an adopted child. Parents were administered a semi-structured interview, assessing knowledge of the donors/birth parents, frequency of thoughts and discussions about the donors/birth parents and disclosure of the donor conception/adoption to

The Systemic Genotype-Phenotype Characterization of PAX6-Related Eye Disease in 164 Chinese Families.

IMPORTANCE: States in the US have the option to eliminate the asset test and/or increase the income limit for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) eligibility under a policy called broad-based categorical eligibility (BBCE). Given associations of economic hardships, including food insecurity, with child protective services (CPS) involvement, state adoption of these policies may be associated with changes in rates of CPS-investigated reports. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of state elimination of the asset test and increases in the income limit for SNAP eligibility under BBC

Anxiety in the family: a genetically informed analysis of transactional associations between mother, father and child anxiety symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety in parents is associated with anxiety in offspring, although little is known about the mechanisms underpinning these intergenerational associations. We conducted the first genetically sensitive study to simultaneously examine the effects of mother, father and child anxiety symptoms on each other over time. METHOD: Adoptive parent and child symptoms were measured at child ages 6, 7 and 8 years from 305 families involved in the Early Growth and Development Study, using a prospective adoption design. Children were adopted at birth to nonrelatives, and composite data on intern

Child Effects on Parental Negativity: The Role of Heritable and Prenatal Factors.

This study examined two possible mechanisms, evocative gene-environment correlation and prenatal factors, in accounting for child effects on parental negativity. Participants included 561 children adopted at birth, and their adoptive parents and birth parents within a prospective longitudinal adoption study. Findings indicated child effects on parental negativity, such that toddlers' negative reactivity at 18 months was positively associated with adoptive parents' over-reactive and hostile parenting at 27 months. Furthermore, we found that child effects on parental negativity were partially du

Primary and secondary trauma in adoptive parents.

AIMS: Secondary trauma is recognised as one of the negative effects for professionals working with people that have experienced trauma. Research has demonstrated secondary trauma in foster carers but little research has explored trauma symptoms within adoptive parents, facing the emotional impact of parenting a child with adverse early experiences. This study aimed to document the rates of primary and secondary trauma symptoms in adoptive parents. It further explores the association between the extent of current behavioural and emotional challenges and the extent of the child's pre-adoption ad

Heritable, Prenatal, and Environmental Pathways of Parental Stress: Differential Influences on Children's Effortful Control and Cortisol Regulation.

Parental stress can have lasting consequences on children's stress sensitivity and self-regulation capacities. However, it remains unclear the extent to which these effects reflect birth parent influences (genetic and/or prenatal), environmental rearing experiences, and/or interactions between them. Parent-offspring adoption designs offer a powerful framework for disentangling these mechanisms by separating birth parent influences from post-natal environmental pathways when the adoptions occur around the time of birth. Although stress experiences of birth parents and adoptive parents have each

Long-term follow-up of women and men after unsuccessful IVF.

The experience of 92 couples, who had unsuccessfully undergone one or more IVF cycles at a university clinic, was evaluated 3-8 years following their last failed attempt. One member of each couple completed a telephone questionnaire regarding life events during their last IVF cycle performed at the clinic and at the time of the interview. Some couples had continued further treatment and some had not. Multivariate correspondence analysis was used to analyse the data. Regarding the long-term experience of couples who had undergone further treatment, for men the main experiences were psychologica

Siblings reared apart: A sibling comparison study on rearing environment differences.

A plethora of studies with parents and children who are biologically related has shown that the family environment plays an important role in child development. However, scientists have long known that a rigorous examination of environmental effects requires research designs that go beyond studies of genetically linked family members. Harnessing the principles of sibling comparison and animal cross-fostering designs, we introduce a novel approach: the siblings-reared-apart design. Supplementing the traditional adoption design of adopted child and adoptive parents with a sample of the adopted c

Marital Hostility, Hostile Parenting, and Child Aggression: Associations from Toddlerhood to School Age.

OBJECTIVE: The spillover hypothesis suggests that childhood aggression results from spillover of interparental conflict to poor parenting, which promotes aggressive child behavior. This study was designed to examine the spillover hypothesis in non-genetically related parent-child dyads from the toddler period through age 6 years. METHOD: A sample of 361 sets of children, adoptive parents, and birth parents from the Early Growth and Development Study (EGDS) was assessed from child age 9 months to 6 years on measures of adoptive parent financial strain, antisocial traits, marital hostility, hos
