Parental Incarceration and Child Sleep and Eating Behaviors.

OBJECTIVES: To examine whether parental incarceration is significantly associated with a number of sleep and eating behaviors among offspring during early childhood. STUDY DESIGN: Data from the Fragile Families and Child Well-Being Study, an at-risk sample of parents and their offspring, were employed to test this possibility. Both maternal and paternal incarceration history were examined as predictors of whether children manifested high levels of the following 7 health behaviors: sleep problems, short sleep duration, salty snack consumption, starch consumption, sweets consumption, soda consu

Child abuse and risky behaviors among youths.

BACKGROUND: Child abuse is an important health issue but it is little known how abuse experiences in childhood and current health risk behaviors are related. OBJECTIVES: To (a) study the prevalence and characteristics of child abuse experience, (b) test the hypothesis that youths with a history of child abuse would have more health risk behaviors compared to their non-abused counterparts and (c) study the associations between child abuse experience, family and social risk factors, and current health risk behaviors. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A cross-sectional population survey was conducted on a s

Understanding the behavioral and emotional consequences of child abuse.

Children who have suffered early abuse or neglect may later present with significant behavior problems including emotional instability, depression, and a tendency to be aggressive or violent with others. Troublesome behaviors may persist long after the abusive or neglectful environment has changed or the child has been in foster care placement. Neurobiological research has shown that early abuse results in an altered physiological response to stressful stimuli, a response that deleteriously affects the child's subsequent socialization. Pediatricians can assist caregivers by helping them recogn

Environmental tobacco smoke exposure and child behaviors.

RATIONALE: Emerging evidence suggests that exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) may be linked with behavior problems in childhood, but previous research has relied primarily on parent report of exposure, and results are inconclusive. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the relationship between exposure to ETS and child behavior problems among children with asthma. METHODS: The sample included 220 children who were enrolled in an asthma intervention trial and regularly exposed to ETS at home. Serum cotinine was used to measure exposure to tobacco smoke, and behavior problems were assessed by

A description of child illness and treatment behavior in Guatemala.

This paper uses a new calendar design implemented in the Guatemalan Survey of Family Health to analyze diarrheal and respiratory illness among children. The calendar provides a much richer description of child illness and treatment behavior than do conventional data typically collected in health interview surveys. The resulting estimates reveal that Guatemalan children experience high rates of diarrheal and respiratory illness and that these illnesses often involve multiple symptoms that only partially overlap one another. In addition, estimates from the calendar demonstrate that the measureme

Dual Food and Energy Hardship and Associated Child Behavior Problems.

OBJECTIVE: To examine dual food and energy hardship and internalizing and externalizing behavior problems in 9-year-old children. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, a prospective national urban birth cohort, when the children were 9 years old. Maternal-reported "food hardship" (ever hungry and/or ever received free food) and "energy hardship" (ever unable to pay utility bill and/or utility shutoff) within the past year, and child behavior using the Child Behavior Checklist for Ages 6-18 were assessed. General Parenting Strategies: Practical Suggestions for Common Child Behavior Issues.

Parents often seek guidance from physicians on child behavior problems. Questions may range from general parenting strategies to managing specific child behaviors. Physicians and their staff can identify problematic parent-child interactions or behaviors within the office setting and assist parents by providing effective monitoring tools for behavior problems. Effective strategies for influencing a child's behavior include positive reinforcement to increase appropriate behavior, extinction (planned ignoring) for most low-level problematic behaviors, and time-out from reinforcement for more pro

Interaction of child and family psychopathology leading to suicidal behavior.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide is the third leading cause of death in adolescence in the United States. Nonfatal forms of suicidal behavior are the most common reasons for the psychiatric hospitalization of adolescents in many countries. The risk for suicide attempt among offspring of suicide completers is multifactorial, challenging experts to develop a strategy that includes assessment and management that consider these factors. Although treatment of depression is necessary, antisuicide treatment strategies that solely target depression may not be suffic

Regulatory disorders in early childhood: Correlates in child behavior, parent-child relationship, and parental mental health.

According to the guidelines published by the German Society of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Psychosomatics and Psychotherapy (2007), regulatory disorders of early childhood are characterized by a symptom triad, including (a) behavioral symptoms such as excessive crying, sleeping, or feeding problems; (b) a disturbed parent-child relationship; and (c) parental psychopathology. On the basis of a clinic-referred sample of 162 children, we examined whether children with and without regulatory symptoms differed in the quality of parent-child relationship and parental mental health, and how ofte

Brief Behavioral Intervention for Disruptive Behavior in a Child with a Hypothalamic Hamartoma: A Case Report.

Most children with hypothalamic hamartoma (HH) manifest symptoms of epilepsy and associated cognitive deficits and behavioral difficulties as well as central precocious puberty (CPP). However, there is little to no research examining behavioral difficulties in children with HH without epilepsy, nor is there research examining treatments to address the behavioral difficulties of patients with HH without epilepsy. In the current case report, the authors implemented a validated parent management training program [the Brief Behavioral Intervention (BBI)], to treat symptoms of ADHD and disruptive b

High Correspondence Between Child Behavior Checklist Rule Breaking Behavior Scale with Conduct Disorder in Males and Females.

This study investigated the diagnostic utility of the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) Rule-Breaking Behavior scale to identify children of both sexes with conduct disorder (CD). Participants were derived from four independent datasets of children with and without attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and bipolar-I disorder of both sexes. Participants had structured diagnostic interviews with raters blinded to subject ascertainment status. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to examine the scale's ability to identify children with and without CD. The sample consisted of

Validation of a cross-cultural instrument for child behavior problems: the Disruptive Behavior International Scale - Nepal version.

BACKGROUND: Obtaining accurate and valid measurements of disruptive behavior disorders remains a challenge in non-Western settings due to variability in societal norms for child behavior and a lack of tools developed outside of Western contexts. This paper assesses the reliability and construct validity of the Disruptive Behavior International Scale - Nepal version (DBIS-N)-a scale developed using ethnographic research in Nepal-and compares it with a widely used Western-derived scale in assessing locally defined child behavior problems. METHODS: We assessed a population-based sample of 268 ch

Maternal characteristics, ratings of child behavior, and mother-child interactions in families of children with externalizing disorders.

Relationships among maternal characteristics, ratings of child behavior, and observed mother-child interactions were examined in a sample of 40 4- to 12-year-old children with externalizing disorders. Mothers and children were observed in a task interaction and mothers provided self-reports of depressed mood, parenting self-esteem, marital satisfaction, social support, and life stress. Child behavior was rated by both mothers and teachers. Several significant correlations were found among observed mother and child behaviors and among maternal self-report measures. However, few significant rela

Child maltreatment and behavioral health outcomes in child welfare: Exploring the roles of severity and polyvictimization.

BACKGROUND: Child maltreatment and polyvictimization are known risk factors for long-term detrimental health and development outcomes, including behavioral health challenges. However, effects from specific types and combinations of maltreatments are unclear. This study examined the association between maltreatment or polyvictimization and behavioral health in a child welfare sample. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Medical records of children with child welfare involvement with at least one behavioral health condition (i.e., mental, behavioral or neurodevelopmental disorder, ICD-10 F01-F99) between

Female Caregivers' Perception of their Child's Sexualized Behaviors: A Pilot Study at a Child Protection Clinic.

This pilot study explored female caregiver's perception of their child's behaviors during sexual abuse evaluations. We compared reports by caregivers with histories of their own child sexual abuse (PCSA) to caregivers with no prior history of child sexual abuse (NPCSA) regarding their 1) child's sexualized behaviors and (2) perceptions of whether their child had been sexually abused. Forty-four caregivers met inclusion criteria. Ninety-five percent of PCSA caregivers versus 21% of NPCSA caregivers reported at least one behavior from the Child Sexual Behavior Inventory. Our findings identified
