Irish is a rapidly changing minority language spoken as the main community language in some areas of the officially Irish-speaking Gaeltacht regions in Ireland. We analyse narratives from 17 parent-child dyads, living in one such area. All children, aged 3-6;4, had high exposure to the local variety of Irish. The input quality was measured by specifying consistency and accuracy of use of morphosyntactic forms in parental narratives directed to their children. The same morphosyntactic forms were analysed in narrative retell by the children. The children produced with high accuracy those forms t

PURPOSE: Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) often report feeling less confident treating children who stutter. Yet, prior research has focused on SLPs' perceptions of groups, rather than an individual child who stutters. The aim of this study was to assess SLPs' perceptions of the therapy they provide to an individual child who stutters and to identify key factors underlying these perceptions.
METHOD: A total of 115 SLPs rated their general experience, knowledge, and confidence related to stuttering treatment and rated how well they perceived therapy to be going for an individual child who s

PURPOSE: To examine (1) how much participation is represented in the benchmark Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) resource, and (2) to what extent that representation reflects the definition of child and youth participation and/or its related constructs per the family of Participation-Related Constructs framework.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We searched and analysed UMLS concepts related to the term "participation." Identified UMLS concepts were rated according to their representation of participation (i.e., attendance, involvement, both) as well as participation-related constructs using deduc

BACKGROUND: Research on child protective services (CPS) is impeded by a lack of high-quality structured data. Crucial information on cases is often documented in case files, but only in narrative form. Researchers have applied automated language processing to extract structured data from these narratives, but this has been limited to classification tasks of fairly low complexity. Large language models (LLMs) may work for more challenging tasks.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to extract structured data from narrative casework reports by applying LLMs to distinguish between different subtypes of violence:

BACKGROUND: The recognition of child physical abuse can be challenging and often requires a multidisciplinary assessment. Deep learning models, based on clinical characteristics, laboratory studies, and imaging findings, were developed to facilitate unbiased identification of children who may have been abused.
METHODS: Level 1 pediatric trauma center registry data from 1/1/2010-1/31/2020 were queried for abused children and matched participants with non-abusive trauma. Observations were de-identified and divided into training and validation sets. Model 1 used patient demographics (age, gender

BACKGROUND: Parents play a critical role in their child's language development. Therefore, advising parents of a child with language difficulties on how to facilitate their child's language might benefit the child. Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) has been developed specifically for this purpose. In PCIT, the speech-and-language therapist (SLT) works collaboratively with parents, altering interaction styles to make interaction more appropriate to their child's level of communicative needs.
AIMS: This study investigates the effectiveness of PCIT in 8-10-year-old children with specific l

Multilocus imprinting disturbances (MLID) have been associated with up to 12% of patients with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome, Silver-Russell syndrome, and pseudohypoparathyroidism type 1B (PHP1B). Single-gene defects affecting components of the subcortical maternal complex (SCMC) have been reported in cases with multilocus hypomethylation defects. We present a patient with speech and language impairment with mild Angelman syndrome (AS) features who demonstrates maternal hypomethylation at 15q11.2 (SNRPN) as well as 11p15.5 (KCNQ1OT1) imprinted loci, but normal methylation at 6q24.2 (PLAGL1), 7p1

Childhood apraxia of speech is a neurologic speech sound disorder in which children have difficulty constructing words and sounds due to poor motor planning and coordination of the articulators required for speech sound production. We report the case of a 3-year-old boy strongly suspected to have childhood apraxia of speech at 18 months of age who used multimodal communication to facilitate language development throughout his work with a speech language pathologist. In 18 months of an intensive structured program, he exhibited atypical rapid improvement, progressing from having no intelligible

If a proactive approach to assessment and intervention had been used in the case study presented at the beginning of this article, the following might have occurred: The SLP would have asked the parents and brother of the 3 1/2-year-old child referred for a communication evaluation to participate in the assessment activities. The parents would have been asked to prioritize their expectations for their daughter's communication, behavior, and school success. They would have been told the SLP would do the same based on her knowledge of performance expectations in these areas for a 3 1/2-year old.

A child with auditory agnosia for verbal and nonverbal sounds was reported. He was born without difficulty and his early development was normal. At the age of 14 months, he suffered from herpes simplex encephalitis and fell in a trance. Soon after he recovered from the illness, he found not to pay any attention to sounds and not to speak any words. He was referred to Teikyo University hospital at 2.5 years of age for the hearing measurement. The average threshold of conditioned orientation reflex audiometry at 500, 1000 and 2000 Hz were 85 dB, while the threshold of auditory brain stem respons

BACKGROUND: Over the last decade Tanzania has become recognized as a regional leader in addressing issues of violence affecting children. Despite global partnerships and national initiatives, physical punishments remain legally sanctioned and broadly socially supported as part of responsible childrearing.
OBJECTIVE: This research aimed to gain insights into community perspectives and experiences of physical punishments in children's upbringings and how community derived meaning and measurement of particular acts relate with global rights-based conceptualizations of physical violence against c

UNLABELLED: The Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS) was developed in English to assess 3 components of catastrophizing (rumination, magnification, helplessness). It has been adapted for use and validated with Flemish-speaking children (Pain Catastrophizing Scale for Children [PCS-C]) and French-speaking adolescents. The PCS-C has been back-translated to English and used extensively in research with English-speaking children; however, the factorial validity of the English PCS-C has not been empirically examined. This study assessed the factor structure of the English PCS-C among a community sample

BACKGROUND: Parent-child interaction therapies are commonly used by speech and language therapists (SLTs) when providing services to young children with language learning difficulties. However, the way parents react to the demands of such interventions is clearly important, especially for those from socially disadvantaged backgrounds. Parents play a central role in the therapy process so to ensure parent engagement, and to maximize intervention effectiveness, parents' views must be considered.
AIMS: To explore the expectations and experiences of parents from socially disadvantaged backgrounds

Growing up in the United States means developing within a context shaped by structural racism. There is, however, substantial variation in how families talk (or do not talk) about it. The present study examined naturalistic parent-child conversations about social inequality and race. Conversations were collected remotely from 124 children (ages 4-8; 16% Asian, 20% Black, 13% multiracial, 14% Latine, 35% white, 2% unspecified; 57% female, 42% male, 1% other) and their parents from across the United States. When explicitly prompted to discuss race, families from different racial backgrounds addr

BACKGROUND: Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly consulted for pediatric health information, yet their demographic biases remain unsystematically evaluated in pediatric contexts.
OBJECTIVES: To assess bias and variability in childhood obesity risk attribution across seven LLMs (ChatGPT, Claude, DeepSeek, Gemini, GLM, Grok, and Qwen), spanning both Western and Chinese-origin developers; all prompts, including those submitted to the Chinese-origin models, were in English only.
METHODS: A structured prompt-based experimental design was employed across six clinical domains (general obes

BACKGROUND: Parents' play an essential role in Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) as the primary agent of intervention with their child. Unfortunately, speech and language therapists (SLTs) report that parents' engagement is challenging when conducting PCIT. Although focusing on and stimulating the engagement of parents, when needed, can increase the success of PCIT, little is known about what factors influence parent engagement.
AIMS: To explore SLTs' views about the factors that facilitate or pose barriers to parents' engagement in PCIT.
METHODS & PROCEDURES: A secondary analysis of 1

BACKGROUND: Multiple studies have highlighted the inequities minority and Indigenous children face when accessing health care. Health and wellbeing are positively impacted when Indigenous children are educated and receive care in their maternal language. However, less is known about the association between minority or Indigenous language use and child development risks and outcomes. In this study, we provide global estimates of development risks and assess the associations between minority or Indigenous language status and early child development using the ten-item Early Child Development Inde

Parents use music, especially singing, to interact with their young children, supporting parent-child bonding and social communication. Little is known about the parental attributes that support musical interactions with their infants. In this exploratory study, we analyzed self-report data from 43 caregiver/infant dyads at up to four time points (9, 12, 15, and 18 months) to assess parent social motivation and musical training as predictors of the home music environment overall, parental singing, and parental beliefs in the benefits of music. We also investigated the home music environment as
