Portrait of sleep in preschoolers involved with Child Protective Services and from the community.

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this exploratory study were: 1) to draw a portrait of sleep, using actigraphic sleep measures, sleep diaries and a validated sleep questionnaire in preschoolers (3- to 5-year-olds) involved with Child Protective Services (CPS) and to compare it with preschoolers from the community, not involved with CPS and 2) to verify whether the sleep differences between the two groups persisted after adjusting for covariates (sociodemographic and child characteristics). METHODS: A total of 92 preschoolers aged from 3 to 5 years (49,5 ± 7,0 months) participated in the study (n

Mothers and fathers in the criminal justice system and children's child protective services involvement.

BACKGROUND: Parental criminal justice system (CJS) involvement is a marker for child protective services (CPS) involvement. OBJECTIVE: To document how parental criminal case processing affects children's CPS involvement. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Participants included mothers and fathers with a serious criminal charge (mothers = 78,882; fathers = 165,070) and without any criminal charge (mothers = 962,963; fathers = 743,604) between 2008-2012. Statewide North Carolina records on court proceedings, births, CPS assessments/investigations, and foster care placements were used. METHODS: The obs

Neighborhood collective efficacy, parental spanking, and subsequent risk of household child protective services involvement.

Children exposed to negative neighborhood conditions and parental spanking are at higher risk of experiencing maltreatment. We conducted prospective analyses of secondary data to determine the effects of neighborhood collective efficacy and parental spanking on household Child Protective Services (CPS) involvement, and whether spanking mediates the relationship between neighborhood collective efficacy and CPS involvement. The sample (N = 2,267) was drawn from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (FFCWS), a stratified random sample of 4,789 births between 1998-2000 in 20 large U.S. ci

What do child maltreatment reports to Child Protective Services tell us about the needs families and communities are experiencing?

Intake reports from child protective service (CPS) agencies are the foundation for subsequent decisions and services within the child welfare system. They provide valuable information for understanding children's needs, yet the unstructured way that information is captured makes the information ascertained in these reports difficult to summarize. Utilizing CPS intake reports from a mid-sized urban county in the southeastern United States (N = 2,724), our study had three aims: (1) develop a coding system to abstract information from narrative CPS intake reports, (2) examine the prevalence of ma

Evaluation of the siblings of physically abused children: a comparison of child protective services caseworkers and child abuse physicians.

Current theories suggest that all children in a home are at risk for physical abuse, when one child is abused. However, little evidence exists to guide decisions regarding the medical management of siblings of physically abused children (contact children [CC]). This study sought to compare child protective services (CPS) caseworkers' and child abuse physicians' (CAP) recommendations regarding the need for medical evaluation of CC in case scenarios of unequivocal physical abuse. In all cases, caseworkers and physicians disagreed on which CC warranted a medical evaluation. In addition, 25% of ca

[Demographic Characteristics of Foreign Residents in Japan; Child Maltreatment and Language Problems in Child Protection Services].

In this study, we examined the changes in the demographic characteristics of foreign residents in Japan (FRJ) and the current status of FRJ from a global health perspective. We also considered child maltreatment that occurred in FRJ families and language problems in child welfare. Japan's official statistics in the end of 2017 indicated that there were more than 2.56 million FRJ from over 190 countries. This population was diverse with heterogeneous characteristics, such as age structure, dwelling place, marital status, and childbirth. At the end of 2017, there were 219,982 FRJ children aged 0

Follow-up of suspected child maltreatment cases treated at a tertiary child protection service facility.

UNLABELLED: The victim's physical and emotional safety are foremost priorities in the clinical care of suspected child maltreatment (CM). The WHO recommends follow-ups, but we lack standardized procedures. This study examined case characteristics in relation to outcomes and follow-up (FU) feasibility at the Forensic Examination Center for Children and Adolescents (FOrensische Kinder- und JugendUntersuchungsStelle, FOKUS), Austria's first tertiary healthcare service offering regular FUs of CM cases. Suspected CM cases presented to FOKUS between July 2015 and June 2017 were retrospectively analy

Assisting decisions in child protection service institutions with the RIC - The Risk Indication in Child sexual abuse.

BACKGROUND: The RIC (Risk Indication in Child sexual abuse) and its screening version (RIC:SV) are actuarial risk assessment instruments, developed at the Austrian Federal Evaluation Centre for Violent and Sexual Offenders and designed for child protection services to assess the likelihood of sexual recidivism in male contact child sexual abusers who still or again live within a family including children. OBJECTIVE: The RIC was designed to require a minimum of forensic information, with the RIC:SV completely waiving such information. PARTICIPANTS: Nine factors related to sexual recidivism co

Untreated Psychiatric and Substance Use Disorders Among Caregivers With Children Reported to Child Protective Services.

IMPORTANCE: Mental and substance use disorders can interfere with parents' ability to care for their children and are associated with a greater likelihood of child protective services involvement to address child maltreatment. Parent engagement in psychiatric and substance use disorder treatment can prevent child maltreatment and family separations. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether caregivers with psychiatric or substance use disorders whose children were referred to child protective services received Medicaid-funded psychiatric or substance use disorder treatment. Trajectories of child protective services contact among Alaska Native/American Indian and non-Native children.

BACKGROUND: Contact with child protective services (CPS) functions as an independent marker of child vulnerability. Alaska children are an important population for understanding patterns of CPS contact given high rates of contact overall and among specific demographic groups. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to identify longitudinal trajectory classes of CPS contact among Alaska Native/American Indian (AN/AI) and non-Native children and examine preconception and prenatal risk factors associated with identified classes. Client Violence and Emotional Health Among Child Protection Services Workers.

This study examined how client violence, or violence from clients, contributes to emotional health over the first three years of employment among one group of susceptible workers: child protective services workers in child welfare. The study assessed the impact of three types of client violence (i.e., yelling, threats, and physical assault) and job characteristics (e.g., time pressure, supervisory support) on emotional health (i.e., stress, psychological distress, and personal burnout), using a sample of 1,117-1,122 newly hired workers over six waves of data collected at six-month intervals. Trajectories and Predictors of Client Violence Among Child Protection Services Workers.

OBJECTIVE: This study used social dominance theory and the Jobs Demands-Resources (JD-R) model to: (1) examine child protective services (CPS) workers' trajectories of client violence, including yelling, threats, and physical violence over job tenure; and (2) assess how demographic characteristics and job attributes contributed to the trajectories. METHOD: Using data from a longitudinal study of newly-hired CPS workers (n = 837-859 depending on outcome), we examined trajectories of client violence from 6 months to 3.5 years. Multi-level mixed effect logistic regression was used to examine how

BACKGROUND: While the overrepresentation of Black families in contact with the child welfare system is a well-established, how child welfare workers specifically engage Black families in voluntary services is poorly understood in Canada. OBJECTIVE: This study aims (1) to explore workers' experiences of Black families engaging with voluntary services?; and (2) understand how workers' perceptions shape decision making practices as it relates to voluntary services. Reporting Perinatal Substance Use to Child Protective Services: Obstetric Provider Perspectives on the Impact on Care.

Objective: To understand obstetric provider perspectives on child protective services (CPS)-mandated reporting requirements and how they affect care for pregnant and postpartum patients with opioid use disorder (OUD). Methods: Key informant interviews were conducted virtually with obstetricians, nurse practitioners, and social workers caring for obstetric patients (n = 12). Providers were asked about their experience as mandated reporters working with patients with OUD. Transcripts were independently coded by two staff, and content analysis was used to identify themes. Results: Our analysis re

Borderline personality disorder features and history of childhood maltreatment in mothers involved with child protective services.

This study examines the history of childhood maltreatment and Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) symptoms in mothers whose children were removed from the home by Child Protective Services (CPS) to identify potential targets for future intervention efforts. Forty-one mothers of children removed from the home due to abuse and/or neglect and 58 community-control mothers without CPS involvement were assessed for history of childhood maltreatment, alcohol and drug use, and BPD features. CPS-involved mothers scored significantly higher on measures of childhood maltreatment history and BPD feature

A survey of health care and child protective services provider knowledge regarding the toe tourniquet syndrome.

Recent efforts to increase public awareness of child abuse may result in an increased number of inappropriate reports of suspected child abuse. The authors believe that digital hair strangulation should be included among the conditions that may be confused with child abuse. Digital hair strangulation (toe tourniquet syndrome) occurs primarily in infants and is characterized by a constricting band of foreign material that becomes tightly wrapped around a digit or digits (most often the toes). The consensus in the medical literature is that this condition is not the result of intentional injury.

Should child obesity be an issue for child protective services? A call for more research on this critical public health issue.

Given the lasting effects on adolescent and adult health, childhood obesity is a major public health issue. The relatively slow progress toward the prevention and treatment of childhood obesity, however, has prompted leaders in both academic and practice sectors to advocate for what may be considered a radical intervention approach, to conceptualize extreme child obesity as an issue of child maltreatment. Advocates of this approach suggest that this conceptualization affords a new angle for intervention-the involvement of child protective services (CPS) in mandating family-focused lifestyle ch

The contribution of childhood emotional abuse to teen dating violence among child protective services-involved youth.

OBJECTIVE: For child protective services (CPS) youth who may have experienced more than one form of maltreatment, the unique contribution of emotional abuse may be over-looked when other forms are more salient and more clearly outside of accepted social norms for parenting. This study considers the unique predictive value of childhood emotional abuse for understanding adolescent post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptomatology and dating violence. Further, PTSD symptomatology is assessed as an explanatory bridge in the emotional abuse-teen dating violence link. METHODS: A random sample of
