Concurrent infection with Mycobacterium avium subsp. hominissuis and Giardia duodenalis in a chinchilla (Chinchilla lanigera f. dom.).

A 3-year-old, female chinchilla (Chinchilla lanigera f. dom.) suffered from prolonged vaginal discharge. Sonographically, multiple nodules were detected in the uterus, and the lung showed a diffuse radiodensity. Ovario-hysterectomy was performed and histology of the uterus revealed a severe multifocal pyogranulomatous metritis with myriads of acid-fast rod-shaped bacilli. Microbiological culture of formalin-fixed uterine tissue and a native vaginal swab resulted in the growth of mycobacteria that were identified as Mycobacterium (M.) avium subsp. hominissuis. The animal was euthanized and path

Drinking preferences in chinchillas (Chinchilla laniger), degus (Octodon degu) and guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus).

Chinchilla (Chinchilla laniger), degus (Octodon degus) and guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) are South American rodents living in a semi-arid habitat with varying, species-specific adaptations to water deprivation. Nonetheless, several diseases have been linked to insufficient water intake when these species are kept as pets, such as urolithiasis or obstipation. This study evaluated preferences for drinking systems. Six animals of each species were given a choice between an open dish and a nipple drinker. Food intake and water intake were measured daily for 13 days. Chinchillas in this study had s

Occurrence of Giardia duodenalis assemblages in farmed long-tailed chinchillas Chinchilla lanigera (Rodentia) from Romania.

BACKGROUND: Giardia duodenalis is a parasitic protist that infects a large number of species, being localized in the small intestine. Two of the eight recognized assemblages have zoonotic potential, but studies regarding their distribution in less important pet or farm species are scarce. Of these species, the long-tailed chinchilla is a host for Giardia spp., although data on the spread of infection and assemblages involved are confined. The present work aimed to determine the prevalence of Giardia infection and assemblage identification in farmed chinchillas in Romania. A total of 341 fecal

Efferent actions in the chinchilla vestibular labyrinth.

Efferent fibers were electrically stimulated in the brain stem, while afferent activity was recorded from the superior vestibular nerve in barbiturate-anesthetized chinchillas. We concentrated on canal afferents, but otolith afferents were also studied. Among canal fibers, calyx afferents were recognized by their irregular discharge and low rotational gains. In separate experiments, stimulating electrodes were placed in the efferent cell groups ipsilateral or contralateral to the recording electrode or in the midline. While single shocks were ineffective, repetitive shock trains invariably led

A Retrospective Analysis of Liraglutide (GLP-1 Agonist) Use in a Chinchilla (Chinchilla lanigera) Model of Auditory Blast Injury.

Chinchillas are a relatively novel research model compared with other rodent species. They require special considerations when it comes to their husbandry and daily care. Chinchillas tend to be shy animals that are well adapted to masking clinical signs of illness. These characteristics can make them a difficult species to maintain in a research setting. The authors' institution has maintained chinchillas and established standardized daily animal care procedures for them. Chinchillas are most commonly used for auditory research. They are often used to study the mechanism of different induced a

[Listeriosis in a chinchilla herd - a case report].

A 6-year-old female chinchilla from a small colony in residential housing was presented due to lethargy and anorexia. Besides a ketoacidosis diagnosed by urinalysis, sepsis was suspected. Symptomatic treatment did not lead to any improvement, in consequence the animal was euthanized. On the basis of histopathological, immunohistological, and bacteriological examinations an infection with Listeria monocytogenes was diagnosed. The pathogen was also detectable in the feces of 2 other animals of the herd, one of which died and the other survived. The herd was treated with antibiotics following mic

Blast-induced cochlear synaptopathy in chinchillas.

When exposed to continuous high-level noise, cochlear neurons are more susceptible to damage than hair cells (HCs): exposures causing temporary threshold shifts (TTS) without permanent HC damage can destroy ribbon synapses, permanently silencing the cochlear neurons they formerly activated. While this "hidden hearing loss" has little effect on thresholds in quiet, the neural degeneration degrades hearing in noise and may be an important elicitor of tinnitus. Similar sensory pathologies are seen after blast injury, even if permanent threshold shift (PTS) is minimal. We hypothesized that, as for

Ototoxicity of triethanolamine polypeptide (cerumenex) in the chinchilla.

UNLABELLED: The use of earwax softeners and cerumenolytics to unblock the external auditory canal is increasing. Although reports on their effectiveness are available, data about their effect on hearing are limited. OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of ototopic triethanolamine polypeptide oleate condensate 10% (Cerumenex) on hearing. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, randomized, controlled trial in a chinchilla animal model. METHODS: Tympanostomy tubes were inserted in five chinchillas, and hearing was assessed with distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) between 1 and 9 kHz prior to applic

Pathogenesis of experimental aural cholesteatoma in the chinchilla.

Histopathological observation of celloidin serial sections of the chinchilla middle ear after treatment with propylene glycol disclosed the development of severe inflammation of the middle ear mucosa and tympanic membrane, papillary proliferation of the epidermis of the tympanic membrane and external auditory meatus, and retraction and adhesion of the tympanic membrane. The findings for the tympanic membrane, impedance testing and histopathological examination suggested that there were two types of acquired cholesteatoma formation, probably with a difference in the pathogenesis. In one type, t

Concentration of salicylate in serum and perilymph of the chinchilla.

The concentration of salicylate in serum and perilymph was measured in chinchillas after intraperitoneal administration of sodium salicylate. Serum salicylate concentration peaked 2 to 4 hours after a single injection. Clearance was approximately complete after 16 hours. The within-subject variability of serum concentration 4 hours after injection was very low. Subject weight significantly affected serum salicylate concentration, with heavier animals showing higher serum levels. The relationship of perilymph to serum salicylate concentration was approximately linear, with a high correlation be

Morphological correlates of aging in the chinchilla cochlea.

The inner ears from 80 chinchillas ranging in age from premature to 19.2 years were examined as plastic-embedded flat preparations to determine the morphological changes associated with aging. Three of the four forms of human presbycusis defined by Schuknecht were found in the chinchillas. All animals had losses of sensory cells or sensory presbycusis. Inner (IHCs) and outer hair cells (OHCs) degenerated at a rate of about 0.29% and 1.0% per year, respectively. Age-related degeneration of inner (IPs) and outer pillars (OPs) occurred at a much slower rate. In four animals (5%) the dendritic pro

The Microbiota Architecture of the Chinchilla Gastrointestinal Tract.

The gastrointestinal microbiota develop alongside the host and play a vital role in the health of cecal fermenters such as chinchillas. However, little is known about the microbiota architecture in healthy chinchillas. Illumine-based 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing was used to investigate the microbiota present in six different gastrointestinal tract regions of three healthy adult chinchillas. The findings revealed significantly more abundant microbiota in the large intestine compared with the proximal segments. In addition, the cecum exhibited better evenness compared to the colon. The core

Update on Diseases in Chinchillas: 2013-2019.

Chinchillas have been used mostly as fur animals and as animal models for human ontological diseases and only recently have been recognized as excellent, long-lived, and robust pet rodents. This review aims to provide updated information on emerging disease conditions in pet chinchillas, such as Streptococcus equi subsp zooepidemicus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Furthermore, this review article provides updated information on previously documented disorders, such as urolithiasis and middle ear disease, in chinchillas. This article is intended to serve as a complement to the current veterinary r

Control of some internal parasites of chinchillas.

An unidentified coccidia was found in chinchillas. Treatment with sulfamethazine apparently eradicated the infection from several herds. Ostertagia females and 1 Trichostrongylus colubriformis male were also found in chinchillas, causing emaciation. A dose of thiabendazole of 100 mg./kg. of body weight was effective against the roundworms, but it was toxic. A dose of trichlorphon, 100 mg./kg. of body weight, was effective and safe. Hymenolepis infection caused emaciation and death. Treatment with doses of niclosamide, 200 mg./kg. of body weight, was successful in removing tapeworms, ending dea

Diagnosis and surgical treatment of colonic obstructive foreign bodies in chinchillas (Chinchilla lanigera): a case series (2017-2020).

We describe a case series of colonic foreign bodies in seven chinchillas. These animals had all shown complete lack of fecal output. Ultrasonography was performed in each case, revealing a hyperechoic foreign body with strong acoustic shadowing in the bowel in 6 of the 7 cases (86%). Foreign bodies were removed under exploratory laparotomy in all cases, with a perioperative survival rate of 71% (5/7). The foreign bodies were extracted from the distal ansa of the ascending colon (n=3), descending colon (n=3), or intermediate part of the ascending colon (n=1). This case series suggests chinchill

Pet chinchillas (Chinchilla lanigera): Source of zoonotic Giardia intestinalis, Cryptosporidium ubiquitum and microsporidia of the genera Encephalitozoon and Enterocytozoon.

The domestic chinchilla (Chinchilla lanigera) is kept as a pet and previous studies suggest that it may play an important role as a source of zoonotic parasites, including Giardia intestinalis, Cryptosporidium spp. and microsporidia. In this study, we examined the occurrence and genetic diversity of above mentioned parasites in pet chinchillas in the Czech Republic by PCR/sequencing of the 18S rRNA, TPI, and ITS genes. Of 149 chinchillas from 24 breeders, 91.3 % were positive for G. intestinalis, 8.1 % for Cryptosporidium spp., 2.0 % for Encephalitozoon spp., and 5.4 % for E. bieneusi. Molecul

Chinchilla models of selective cochlear hair cell loss.

Although it is well known that ethacrynic acid (EA) can enhance gentamicin (GM) ototoxicity, there has been no systematic study of the relationship between dosing parameters and inner ear pathology. We examined the effects of two parameters, GM dose and time delay between GM and EA administration, on cochlear and vestibular hair cell loss in chinchillas. 'No delay' groups received one injection of GM (125, 40, 20, or 10 mg/kg i.m.) followed immediately by EA (40 mg/kg i.v.); 'delay' groups received GM (10 mg/kg i.m.) followed by EA 1 or 1.5 h later. Effects of otic drops on chinchilla tympanic membrane.

Experimental studies have shown that if antibiotic otic drops reach the middle ear cavity they produce severe inflammation. However, the effects of these preparations on the tympanic membrane have not been thoroughly investigated. This study was designed to assess morphological changes in the chinchilla tympanic membrane two to 21 days after a single 0.2-mL application of an antibiotic otic preparation (Cortisporin Otic Suspension) to the middle ear cavity. At two days, the epidermal and the mucosal layers were destroyed. By four days, reepithelialization had occurred and all layers of the tym
