Evaluation of DNA damage in a population of bats (Chiroptera) residing in an abandoned monazite mine.

Ionising radiation has the ability to induce DNA damage. While the effects of high doses of radiation of short duration have been well documented, the biological effects of long-term exposure to low doses are poorly understood. This study evaluated the clastogenic effects of low dose ionising radiation on a population of bats (Chiroptera) residing in an abandoned monazite mine. Bats were sampled from two chambers in the mine, where external radiation levels measured around 20 microSv/h (low dose) and 100 microSv/h (higher dose), respectively. A control group of bats was sampled from a cave wit

Morphological analysis of the male reproductive accessory glands of the bat Artibeus lituratus (Phyllostomidae: Chiroptera).

Bats are distributed worldwide from tropical to temperate regions. Despite their wide geographical radiation and advances in studies using evolutionary approaches, aspects related to the reproduction of these animals remain poorly explored, especially those related to the male reproductive accessory glands (RAGs). Thus, the aim of this study was to analyze the morphophysiology of the male RAGs in the bat Artibeus lituratus. The RAGs in A. lituratus are composed of a compact intra-abdominal glandular complex, consisting of the prostate with two prostatic regions (ventral and dorsal), plus Littr

Molecular Characterization of Hemotropic Mycoplasma spp. From Bats (Chiroptera) in the Northern Pantanal, Brazil.

In this study, we conducted a molecular investigation of hemotropic Mycoplasma spp. in bat species captured in the northern region of the Pantanal biome, Mato Grosso State, Brazil. Tissue samples were screened by qPCR targeting the 16S rRNA gene. Positive samples were subsequently subjected to conventional PCR assays targeting partial fragments of the 16S rRNA (~900 bp) and 23S rRNA (~800 bp) genes. Hemoplasma DNA was detected in four bat species: Glossophaga soricina, Molossops temminckii, Molossus rufus, and Desmodus rotundus. Phylogenetic analyses based on partial 16S and 23S rRNA gene sequ

Early Pleistocene Serotine Bat Eptesicus praeglacialis (Vespertilionidae, Chiroptera) from the Taurida Cave in Crimea.

The cranial and mandibular remains of a large serotine bat Eptesicus praeglacialis Kormos, 1930 are described from the Lower Pleistocene deposits of the Taurida cave in the central Crimea. This is the first finding of the skull material of E. praeglacialis and the first record of the species in Crimea. Judging by the tooth wear stages, the remains of both young and adult specimens are present in the taphocenosis. The small mammal tooth marks on the bones (caused by eating the remnants of soft tissues) in the absence of signs of digestion, characterizing materials from the predatory bird pellet

Dicephalic Parapagus Conjoined Twins in a Large Fruit-eating Bat, Genus Artibeus (Chiroptera, Phyllostomidae).

Conjoined twinning is an embryological anomaly rarely reported in wild mammals and with only two previous records in Chiroptera. Here, we report a case of dicephalic parapagus conjoined twins in the Neotropical phyllostomid genus Artibeus. These twins are males and present separated heads and necks, but a conjoined trunk with an expanded upper thoracic region. They developed two complete forelimbs and two complete hindlimbs, all laterally to the trunk. There is a volume in the upper midback and between the heads that resembles a third rudimentary medial forelimb, but X-ray images only suggest

Volatile compounds in shoulder gland secretions of male flying foxes, genus Pteropus (Pteropodidae, Chiroptera).

The shoulder gland secretions of captive males of the Indian flying fox (Pteropus giganteus), the little golden-mantled flying fox (P. pumilus), the island flying fox (P. hypomelanus), and the large flying fox (P. vampyrus) were examined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Sixty-five compounds, including hydrocarbons, carboxylic acids, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, esters, and amides, were identified among the four species. Many of these compounds, such as squalene, cholesterol, and C5-C16 straight- and branched-chain carboxylic acids, are typical of tetrapod epidermal products. Aldehydes

Parasitism, seasonality, and diversity of trombiculid mites (Trombidiformes: Parasitengona, Trombiculidae) infesting bats (Chiroptera) in Poland.

The study aims to ascertain the diversity of trombiculid species associated with Chiroptera in Poland, and for the first time in the case of research on Central European Trombiculidae, we use both DNA and morphology in an integrative taxonomic approach to determine species identities of trombiculids. The research was carried out from 2015 to 2019. In total, 2725 larvae were collected from 300 specimens of bats belonging to 11 species. Deutonymphs were obtained through laboratory rearing of larvae; few larvae and deutonymphs were collected also from bats' daily roosts. The presence of trombicul

A new species of Torrestrongylus (Trichostrongylidae, Anoplostrongylinae) from Macrotus waterhousii (Chiroptera: Phyllostomidae) in Central Mexico.

A new species of nematode, Torrestrongylus tetradorsalis n. sp., is described herein, based on specimens recovered from the small intestine of the leaf-nosed bat, Macrotus waterhousii, from the Biosphere Reserve "Sierra de Huautla" in the state of Morelos, Mexico. The new species is included in Torrestrongylus because it features a bursa of the type 3 - 2, a divided cephalic vesicle with an anterior half in the shape of an umbrella, and a posterior widened half. The new species can be distinguished from the only other congener T. torrei Pérez-Vigueras, 1935 by four key features: first, by the

Seasonal changes in thyroid activity in the female sheath-tailed bat, Taphozous longimanus (Chiroptera: Emballonuridae).

The present study was designed to investigate changes in thyroid activity during the reproductive cycle in Taphozous longimanus. Thyroid gland showed marked seasonal variation in weight and secretory activity. It was inactive in quiescence and early to mid-winter dormancy and active during recrudescence and breeding period during late winter dormancy. The serum 3,5,3'-triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) concentrations showed significant variation and closely coincided with thyroid activity. The T3 and T4 concentrations were higher in recrudescence, late winter dormancy and minimum in quie

A NEW SPECIES OF TRICHOLEIPERIA (NEMATA: TRICHOSTRONGYLOIDEA: MOLINEIDAE) FROM LAMPRONYCTERIS BRACHYOTIS (CHIROPTERA: PHYLLOSTOMIDAE) IN COLOMBIA.

Tricholeiperia albae n. sp. is described from the small intestine of the yellow-throated big-eared bat, Lampronycteris brachyotis (Chiroptera: Phyllostomidae). Morphologic comparisons and a review of nematode parasites of neotropical bats indicate that this represents an undescribed species. Herein, we describe this species as new and show that this is a novel bat-parasite association. More than 50 species of bats have been reported from the Apure-Villavicencio dry forests ecoregion, but little is known of the parasite fauna. Continued exploration of new localities in Colombia underscores the

Great Evening Bat Ia io (Vespertilionidae, Chiroptera) from the Pleistocene of Vietnam (Lang Trang Cave).

A dentary fragment of a great evening bat Ia io Thomas, 1902 found in 2020 in the Pleistocene deposits of the Lang Trang karstic cave in northern Vietnam is described. This rare species of large tropical bats now inhabits Nepal, eastern India, southern China, Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam and as a fossil is known from the Pleistocene of China. In Vietnam the fossil remains of this species have been discovered for the first time. By the total size and lower molar structure, the specimen from the Lang Trang cave is most similar to the subspecies Ia io peninsulata Soisook et al., 2017 that now occu

Ectoparasitic flies (Diptera, Streblidae) of bats (Chiroptera, Phyllostomidae) in an Atlantic Forest area, southeastern Brazil.

We studied infestation rates and parasite-host associations between streblid flies and phyllostomid bats in an Atlantic Forest area of Rio de Janeiro state, southeastern Brazil. We captured 301 individuals from seven Phyllostomidae bat species. Out of that total, 69 bats had been parasitised by nine Streblidae species; the most frequent species were Trichobius joblingi and Trichobius tiptoni. The species Paraeuctenodes longipes, associated with Anoura geoffroyi, was the most frequent species. The highest mean intensity was observed for Paraeuctenodes longipes, associated with A. geoffroyi, and

Reproductive biology of the female little mastiff bat, Mormopterus planiceps (Chiroptera: Molossidae) in southeast Australia.

The reproductive biology of the female little mastiff bat (Mormopterus planiceps) was studied from specimens obtained throughout the year in southeast Australia, within the region occupied only by the long penile form of this species. Mormopterus planiceps appeared to undergo a single pregnancy each year and was monotocous. Conception occurred during late winter/early spring after a protracted proestrus, during which the uterine/vaginal epithelia attained an extraordinary thickness; spermatozoa were present in the uterine corpus, vagina, and intramural oviduct for at least 2 months prior to ov

Anatomical location of Periglischrus iheringi(Acari: Spinturnicidae) associated with the great fruit-eating bat (Chiroptera: Phyllostomidae).

Spinturnicid mites are ectoparasites that infest the wings of bats, and species of the genus Periglischrus Kolenati, 1857 are associated exclusively with bats of the family Phyllostomidae. We tested the hypothesis that a long-term evolutionary association led P. iheringi to choose very specific wing locations to infest the great fruit-eating bats, Artibeus lituratus. Seven anatomical wing regions and the uropatagium from 140 bats were analyzed and a total of 78 parasites were collected. Periglischrus iheringi had a significant preference for the plagiopatagium and dactylopatgium major wing reg

Annual reproductive cycle of males of the flat-faced fruit-eating bat, Artibeus planirostris (Chiroptera: Phyllostomidae).

Artibeus planirostris is an endemic species of Phyllostomid bat from the Neotropical region. Some studies have indicated that it exhibits seasonal bimodal polyestry; however, others postulate that it may be able to produce young at any time during the year. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the annual variations in testicular and epididymal parameters of this species in southeast Brazil and try to understand how the reproduction of this species is regulated in this environment. Sixty mature male specimens, collected between June 2009 and May 2010, were submitted to morphometric and i

Albinism in Artibeus planirostris (Chiroptera, Phyllostomidae) in the Caatinga biome and updated list of albino bats in Brazil.

Albinism is a genetic disorder that results in a deficiency in melanin production. This type of chromatic alteration may affect several vertebrate species, but is rarely observed in nature. In Brazil, for the bat group, only 15 albino individuals have been registered. Here we present a new case for Artibeus planirostris. A pregnant female of this species with alopecia was captured in the Caatinga biome. A compilation of the distribution of albino bats in Brazil is presented.
