Synovial chondromatosis is cartilaginous metaplasia of mesenchymal remnants of synovial tissue of the joints. Its main characteristic is the formation of cartilaginous nodules in the synovium and inside the articular space (loose bodies). It usually presents between the third and fifth decades and is rare in children. It presents as a mono-articular pathology affecting large joints such as the knee, hip, and elbow. The main symptoms are pain, swelling, and limitation of movements in the affected joint. Diagnosis is made by panoramic radiographs, computed tomography scan, and mainly magnetic re

Two cases of arthroscopic removal of multiple loose bodies are presented. Successful results were achieved, and patients had 4-year follow-up. Both cases involved classic manifestations of synovial chondromatosis. Associated degenerative changes were present in one case; histologic examination could not confirm synovial origin of the disease. Arthroscopy for removal of symptomatic loose bodies is an excellent choice as exemplified by these two cases. Care should be taken to review histologic findings, which may help in understanding the natural history of this type of process.

Very few cases of primary synovial chondromatosis of the elbow have been reported in the literature. This is a study concerning the late outcome of primary synovial chondromatosis in the elbows of 12 patients, 10 men and 2 women, with a mean follow-up of 16 years 10 months. The average age at the time of the initial complaint was 29 years. The histories of 10 patients revealed elbow strain as a consequence of work-related activities. Surgery included removal of loose bodies and partial synovectomy in all patients. A moderate to severe osteoarthritis was found preoperatively in 5 of 12 patients

Synovial chondromatosis, is the chondroid metaplasia of the synovial membrane. Large joints such as the knee and hip are most commonly involved. Extraarticular involvement is rarely described. Synovial chondromatosis may be associated with impingement syndrome of the shoulder. We report a case of synovial chondromatosis of the subcoracoid bursa, which resulted in impingement symptoms.

A rare case of synovial chondromatosis involving the radiocarpal joint is described. Histologic examination revealed a cartilaginous loose body and mildly inflamed synovium. Histologic differentiation of this condition from synovial chondrosarcoma can be difficult because of the frequent finding of nuclear atypia. Surgical excision is recommended.

Synovial chondromatosis of the temporomandibular joint is a rare, benign condition of unknown etiology. It is characterised by the presence of loose cartilage bodies in the joint space which gradually leads to increased functional disturbances. The clinical, radiological, histopathological and therapeutical aspects are presented together with a new case report.

Synovial chondromatosis of the hip joint is uncommon entity. Two cases are presented, and the spectrum of the disease is discussed. Partial synovectomy with loose body removal is recommended as the treatment of choice. Joint replacement is performed only in patients with severe secondary osteoarthritis, and used only in selected cases.

Synovial chondromatosis is a benign, chronic, progressive synovial metaplasia that will not resolve spontaneously. Although it is non-neoplastic, the condition can easily be mistaken histologically as malignant. One Chinese male patient with synovial chondromatosis of the temporomandibular joint is described. Awareness of this rare lesion is important to prevent overdiagnosis and radical treatment. Treatment consists of synovectomy and removal of loose bodies within the joint space.

Synovial chondromatosis is not so rare intra-articular condition secondary to synovial metaplasia, that affects the knee joint. Extra-articular synovial chondromatosis however is an extremely rare condition that usually involves the synovial sheath or bursa of the foot or hand. We present two cases of synovial chondromatosis, one intra and one extra-articular. The first case was a 25 year old lady who presented with pain, swelling and restricted range of motion of left knee and was found to have an intra-articular synovial chondromatosis which was treated successfully by joint debridement. STUDY DESIGN: A case report of lumbar synovial chondromatosis with radiculopathy.
OBJECTIVE: To report a case of synovial chondromatosis of a lumbar facet joint that extended into the spinal canal and compromised the lumbar nerve root and raised spinal surgeons' awareness of the possibility of this unusual clinical problem.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Synovial chondromatosis is an uncommon disorder characterized by the formation of multiple cartilaginous nodules in the synovium of a facet joint. It most commonly affects large joints. Synovial chondromatosis in the spine is rare and there is

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to identify factors that affect pain, complications, and function following elbow arthroscopy for elbow synovial chondromatosis.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the cases of all patients with elbow synovial chondromatosis treated by arthroscopic synovectomy and loose body removal between January 2000 and January 2016 at our institution. Eleven patients were enrolled (8 male; mean age, 41.7 years). The mean duration of symptoms was 13.7 months, and all patients had a decreased range of motion (ROM) in the affected elbow. By Milgram criteria, there was 1 phase II case,

Synovial chondromatosis of the temporomandibular joint is an uncommon disorder with an indolent clinical course and a slow progression. We report a rare case of unilateral early synovial chondromatosis of the temporomandibular joint with numerous nodules and discuss possible etiologies for the entity of loose bodies and the evolution of this disease.

Two cases of an unusual association-fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva and synovial chondromatosis-in non-related children are presented. This association does not seem coincidental and raises several questions about the pathogenesis. A genetic hypothesis related to G proteins is proposed. This is supported by the fact that such abnormalities have been demonstrated in pseudohypoparathyroidism and fibrous dysplasia; these diseases can also be associated with fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva.

We report the case of an 80-year-old woman who presented with an asymptomatic slowly growing mass in the dorsal aspect of her right wrist. Radiographs revealed a snail-shaped radiopaque structure. Surgical exploration and excision revealed a calcified lesion over the extensor digitorum communis. Histopathological analysis confirmed the diagnosis of tenosynovial chondromatosis. At the last follow-up, four years after surgery, the patient was asymptomatic and free of recurrence. Practitioners and hand surgeons should be aware of the dorsal involvement and evocative radiological calcifications of

BACKGROUND: Synovial chondromatosis is an uncommon disorder characterized by the formation of multiple cartilaginous nodules in the synovium of the facet joint. It most commonly affects large joints such as hip or shoulder. Commonly seen features are bony erosion and calcifications. Synovial chondromatosis is rare in the spine and there are few previous reports of extension into the spinal canal.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 58-year-old man presented with a 2 year history of progressive numbness in the right upper extremity without objective weakness. A several month course of conservative management,

BACKGROUND: Recently, arthroscopic loose body removal and synovectomy have been performed as treatments for synovial chondromatosis of the hip joint. However, to date, no reports have been published on the outcomes of arthroscopic treatments.
HYPOTHESIS: Arthroscopic treatment is effective for synovial chondromatosis of the hip joint and has advantages such as low recurrence rates, faster return to activities of daily life, and few surgical complications.
STUDY DESIGN: Case series; Level of evidence, 4.
METHODS: From June 1996 to July 2008, 24 patients with synovial chondromatosis of the hi

PURPOSE: To report an exceptional case of bilateral synovial chondromatosis (SC) of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and discuss diagnostic approaches, treatment options and follow-up data.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A 38-year-old woman presented with left preauricular swelling. Initial imaging studies revealed TMJ effusion only. Six years later, synovial calcifications were detected in the left TMJ; the right TMJ space was widened and presented incipient calcium deposits. Open arthrotomy of the left TMJ was performed, with removal of multiple cartilaginous loose bodies and complete synovectomy.
