Recent studies have demonstrated that ectopic glycoprotein hormones only partially bind Con A. To investigate the basis for these findings, the Con A binding of ectopic hCG beta from DoT cervical carcinoma cells was examined after digestion with various glycosidases. OBJECTIVE: Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is widely used in the management of hydatidiform mole and persistent trophoblastic disease (PTD). Predicting PTD after molar pregnancy might be beneficial since prophylactic chemotherapy reduces the incidence of PTD.

OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to compare the efficacy of triple-marker screening (alpha-fetoprotein, unconjugated estriol, human chorionic gonadotropin) with alpha-fetoprotein plus free beta-human chorionic gonadotropin.
STUDY DESIGN: Free beta-human chorionic gonadotropin was concurrently assayed in 2349 maternal serum samples. Trivariate and bivariate algorithms were used to calculate the risk for fetal Down syndrome by the two protocols.
