Disorders of the choroid plexus, a central nervous system structure, are rare, but can pose diagnostic difficulties. The purpose of this review is to illustrate the computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging findings of a wide spectrum of lesions that affect the choroid plexus. The areas covered include (1) neoplasms (papilloma, leukaemia, meningioma, lymphoma and metastases); (2) infections (bacterial, fungal and viral); (3) cysts; (4) haemorrhage; (5) congenital abnormalities (Sturge-Weber syndrome, Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber syndrome and vascular malformations); and (6) non-infectious

The cytopathologic features of choroid plexus carcinoma in the cerebrospinal fluid of a 13-month-old male infant were reviewed and compared with those of other small-cell malignant neoplasms of childhood and young adulthood involving the central nervous system. The cytologic features of the choroid plexus carcinoma (tight spatial clusters and isolated anaplastic cells with striking nuclear lobulation) were distinct from those of lymphoma, leukemia, neuroblastoma, ependymoma and pineal germinoma. However, the cells had a striking resemblance to those of anaplastic ependymoma and metastatic aden

Choroid plexus tumors are rare pediatric neoplasms ranging from low-grade papillomas to overtly malignant carcinomas. They are commonly associated with Li-Fraumeni syndrome and germline TP53 mutations. Choroid plexus carcinomas associated with Li-Fraumeni syndrome are less responsive to chemotherapy, and there is a need to avoid radiation therapy leading to poorer outcomes and survival. Malignant progression from choroid plexus papillomas to carcinomas is exceedingly rare with only a handful of cases reported, and the molecular mechanisms of this progression remain elusive. We report a case of

BACKGROUND: The coexistence of multiple sclerosis and intracranial neoplasms is very rare, and whether this occurrence can be explained by a causal relationship or by coincidence remains a matter of debate. Possible roles of the choroid plexus as a site of tumor cell invasion and lymphocyte infiltration into the central nervous system have been hypothesized in recent studies.
METHODS: We describe a 13-year-old boy with concurrent multiple sclerosis and choroid plexus papilloma, then review the published literature with a focus on the pathophysiologic mechanisms of neuroinflammation in multipl

BACKGROUND: Fluorescein angiography has been used in the clinical evaluation of suspected neoplastic lesions of the ocular fundus for over 30 years. Yet, the independent diagnostic value of this photographic technique in patients with suspected intraocular neoplasms has never been determined.
METHODS: The authors evaluated color fundus photographs and fluorescein angiograms of 50 mass lesions of the ocular fundus. The cases were chosen to reflect a broad spectrum of lesions, including choroidal malignant melanoma, choroidal nevus, circumscribed choroidal hemangioma, metastatic carcinoma to th

A choroid plexus papilloma is a rare CNS neoplasm arising from the neuroepithelial lining of the choroid plexus. A third ventricular location of a choroid plexus papilloma is rare compared with the more common sites in the lateral and fourth ventricles. Cystic choroid plexus papilloma represents an infrequent subtype that may present diagnostic ambiguity. The authors present a case of cystic choroid plexus papilloma within a cavum septum pellucidum that radiographically mimicked neurocysticercosis.

Tumours derived from choroid plexus are rare central nervous system neoplasms affecting mainly children. This study presents a series of 38 patients with neuroectodermal tumours. Twenty four of them had the histological and/or immunohistochemical diagnosis of choroid plexus carcinoma (CPC). Sixteen of these patients were male. The left lateral ventricle was affected in most cases. Main clinical features were: hydrocephalus, intracranial hypertension and convulsion. All the patients were treated by surgery. There were 2 deaths due to surgical complications. Nine patients had recurrence, dying i

Expression of SV40 large T antigen was correlated with the development of pathology in three lines of transgenic mice. Immunohistochemical detection of large T revealed positive cells only in subsets of choroid plexus epithelium, thymus and renal tubular epithelium, which was first observed during the first month of post-natal life. Morphologic abnormalities became apparent several weeks later. Only some of the choroid plexus cells which expressed T antigen progressed to form neoplasms, suggesting the need for one or more secondary events to effect transformation. Tumors did not develop in thy

Choroid plexus papilloma is a rare intracerebral neoplasm that occasionally disseminates along the neuraxis. The fine structure of such a metastatic papilloma appears to correspond very closely to that of normal choroid plexus. Lack of capillary endothelial pores is the only meaningful difference. There does not appear to be an ultrastructural feature that is unique to disseminating choroid plexus papilloma.

Oncocytic transformation is an infrequent event within the central nervous system and is limited to neoplasms of the choroid plexus, meninges, and pituitary gland. Oncocytic modifications in choroid plexus tumors seem to occur predominantly in adult patients and in the fourth ventricle and do not seem to reflect any particular biological behavior. Meningiomas showing oncocytic differentiation have been recently described and this variant probably behaves more aggressively. Pituitary oncocytomas are regarded as a subtype of null cell adenomas. Oncocytic tumors have a significantly higher risk o

The incidence of choroid plexus papilloma is about 0.5% of all intracranial tumors, but choroid plexus papilloma in the third ventricle is rare. Fortuna reported 56 cases of choroid plexus papilloma of the third ventricle in 1979. Among them, the neoplasm of the third ventricle in the neonatal period was not found. This report is a case of choroid plexus papilloma of the third ventricle in the neonatal period. A 34 day-old female was admitted to our service with complaints of head enlargement, vomiting, and convulsive seizures on January 8, 1981. Enlarged head had been noticed by her family wi

We report a case of an incidental pineal cyst discovered on MR imaging that progressed to a choroid plexus papilloma. The MR features of pineal cysts, the difficulty of distinguishing benign cysts from cystic neoplasms, and the implications for surgical management are discussed.

INTRODUCTION: Atypical choroid plexus papilloma is a rare tumour, recently defined by the World Health Organisation and with very few cases reported to date. Choroid plexus tumours are rare intraventricular neoplasms originating from choroid plexus epithelium, with benign papillomas being more frequent than carcinomas. Most of these lesions appear in children, mainly located in the lateral ventricles. Those arising from the fourth ventricle are more frequent in adulthood. Surgery with complete resection can be curative in papillomas, with 5-year survival rates close to 100% and occasional recu

Primary neoplasms of the choroid plexus in children are surgically treatable, and the encouraging results of surgical removal, even for carcinoma, justify an aggressive surgical approach. Forty cases operated on over a span of 45 years have been reviewed in detail, including a rereading of all microscopic slides. The prognosis for children with papilloma has been excellent. The 5-year survival rate for children with carcinoma of the choroid plexus was 50%, and all deaths occurred within 7 months of operation. The patients whose carcinomas were totally removed had a better prognosis than did th

BACKGROUND: Choroid plexus tumors are intraventricular neoplasms derived from the choroid plexus epithelium. A better knowledge of molecular factors involved in choroid plexus tumor biology may aid in identifying patients at risk for recurrence.
METHODS: Methylation profiles were examined in 29 choroid plexus papillomas (CPPs, WHO grade I), 32 atypical choroid plexus papillomas (aCPPs, WHO grade II), and 31 choroid plexus carcinomas (CPCs, WHO grade III) by Illumina Infinium HumanMethylation450 Bead Chip Array.
RESULTS: Unsupervised hierarchical clustering identified 3 subgroups: methylation

Rosettes and pseudorosettes are morphologic cell arrangements found in many neuroepithelial neoplasms in human medicine, including embryonal nervous system tumors (neuroblastoma, medulloblastoma, pineoblastoma, and retinoblastoma), non-embryonal nervous system tumors (ependymoma, astrocytoma, oligodendroglioma, and choroid plexus tumors), and other extraneural neuroepithelial neoplasms. Although these structures are also described in neuroepithelial neoplasms of domestic animals, their frequency is still poorly characterized or inconsistently documented in veterinary medicine. Furthermore, ros

BACKGROUND: "Collision" tumours consist of different neoplasms coexisting within a single lesion. Whilst quite common in the skin, the gastrointestional tract, and the ovaries, intraocular collision tumours are exceedingly rare. We describe an exceptional case of a combined uveal melanoma and intraocular plasmacytoma.
METHODS: Observational case report. A 61-year-old woman underwent enucleation for rubeotic glaucoma and cells in the anterior chamber after proton-beam radiotherapy of a cilio-choroidal melanoma of the right eye. Examination of the enucleated eye was performed with immunohistoch
