Disorders of the choroid plexus, a central nervous system structure, are rare, but can pose diagnostic difficulties. The purpose of this review is to illustrate the computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging findings of a wide spectrum of lesions that affect the choroid plexus. The areas covered include (1) neoplasms (papilloma, leukaemia, meningioma, lymphoma and metastases); (2) infections (bacterial, fungal and viral); (3) cysts; (4) haemorrhage; (5) congenital abnormalities (Sturge-Weber syndrome, Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber syndrome and vascular malformations); and (6) non-infectious

A variety of neoplasms may arise in the ventricular system. Intraventricular neoplasms may be discovered as an incidental finding at cross-sectional imaging or may manifest with varied symptoms depending on their location, including symptoms of increased intracranial pressure. These lesions may arise from various ventricular structures, including the ependymal lining (eg, ependymoma), subependymal layer (eg, subependymoma), or choroid plexus (eg, choroid plexus neoplasms), or they may have a cell of origin that has yet to be determined (eg, chordoid glioma). Other neoplasms involving the ventr

The authors report a case of carcinoma of the choroid plexus and review the 22 cases reported since 1844 that adhere to the criteria for primary choroid plexus carcinoma. Two-thirds of the tumors are found in children and all of these are located in the lateral ventricles. In adults most of the tumors are present in the fourth ventricle. Differentiation of this neoplasm from papillary ependymomas, choroid plexus papillomas, secondary carcinomas, and "collision tumors" is discussed.

Tumours derived from choroid plexus are rare central nervous system neoplasms affecting mainly children. This study presents a series of 38 patients with neuroectodermal tumours. Twenty four of them had the histological and/or immunohistochemical diagnosis of choroid plexus carcinoma (CPC). Sixteen of these patients were male. The left lateral ventricle was affected in most cases. Main clinical features were: hydrocephalus, intracranial hypertension and convulsion. All the patients were treated by surgery. There were 2 deaths due to surgical complications. Nine patients had recurrence, dying i

We report a case of nocardia choroid plexitis with extension into the parenchyma of the left parietal lobe in a previously well 13-year-old girl. The neuroimaging findings mimicked those of an intracranial neoplasm. This case illustrates the importance of including infectious etiologies in the differential diagnosis of aggressive choroid plexus lesions. The differential diagnosis of enhancing lesions of the choroid plexus in children is discussed.

While the calcification has been documented radiologically in 4 - 25 percent of the cases with choroid plexus papilloma, the ossification of choroid plexus papilloma has been reported only in 3 cases on literature. In this paper, we present a case of large ossified choroid plexus papilloma in the right lateral ventricle. A 35-year-old man was admitted with left hemiparesis and headache. Skull X-rays showed an abnormal calcified mass (25 mm x 23 mm x 14 mm) in the right temporal region. CT scan revealed an abnormal high density area protruding into the right lateral ventricle, and a low density

BACKGROUND: Choroid plexus tumors are rare neoplasms that are typically found in the lateral ventricles. They have infrequently been reported in the third ventricle, and treatment strategies have varied.
OBSERVATIONS: The authors described a 6-month-old patient who presented with irritability and hypotonia. The patient was found to have a large tumor in the third ventricle with obstructive hydrocephalus. Preoperative angiography revealed a feeding artery from the right medial posterior choroidal artery (MPChA). The feeding artery was effectively embolized, and the patient subsequently receive

The cytopathologic features of choroid plexus carcinoma in the cerebrospinal fluid of a 13-month-old male infant were reviewed and compared with those of other small-cell malignant neoplasms of childhood and young adulthood involving the central nervous system. The cytologic features of the choroid plexus carcinoma (tight spatial clusters and isolated anaplastic cells with striking nuclear lobulation) were distinct from those of lymphoma, leukemia, neuroblastoma, ependymoma and pineal germinoma. However, the cells had a striking resemblance to those of anaplastic ependymoma and metastatic aden

There are many types of neoplasms in or around the foramen of Luschka (FL), and definitive diagnosis in some cases requires knowledge of imaging findings. The uncommon and challenging neoplasms with FL involvement considered in this study are exophytic brainstem glioma, primary glioblastoma of the cerebellopontine angle (CPA), primary anaplastic ependymoma of the CPA, choroid plexus papilloma of the FL, solitary FL choroid plexus metastasis, extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma of the jugular foramen, paraganglioma of the jugular foramen, exostosis of the jugular foramen, psammomatous meningiom

Choroid plexus papillomas (CPPs) are benign but rare neuroepithelial neoplasms of the choroid plexus that represent the non-malignant form of a spectrum of tumors of the choroid plexus. The vast majority of CPPs present in children under 5 years of age. Some CPPs are diagnosed prenatally, but many of them reach a large size before diagnosis. CPPs typically present with signs and symptoms of hydrocephalus. Treatment of these tumors has traditionally been with surgical resection. Large CPPs in young children present a challenge due to risk of high blood loss during resection. Here, the authors d

Expression of SV40 large T antigen was correlated with the development of pathology in three lines of transgenic mice. Immunohistochemical detection of large T revealed positive cells only in subsets of choroid plexus epithelium, thymus and renal tubular epithelium, which was first observed during the first month of post-natal life. Morphologic abnormalities became apparent several weeks later. Only some of the choroid plexus cells which expressed T antigen progressed to form neoplasms, suggesting the need for one or more secondary events to effect transformation. Tumors did not develop in thy

Mature cystic teratoma of the ovary is the most common type of germ cell tumor. It constitutes approximately 20% of all ovarian neoplasms. As a rare occurrence, however, several types of benign and malignant tumours developing secondarily in dermoid cysts have been reported. Those of central nervous origin are almost exclusively gliomas of astrocytic, ependymal or oligodendroglial lineage. Choroid plexus tumors are unusual intracranial tumors which comprised of only 0.4-0.6% of all brain tumors. These are neuroectodermal in origin and similar in structure to a normal choroid plexus in the form

The time course of uptake, retention and clearance of the cationic lipophilic dye, rhodamine 123 (Rh123), within the central nervous system was qualitatively evaluated in rats. Weanling rats were injected intracerebrally with avian sarcoma virus, which induced malignant gliomas in situ before injection of Rh123. Comparison was made of the amount of fluorescence of Rh123 within the normal cerebral cortex, myelinated tracts of the brain, meninges, choroid plexus, and neoplastic foci at 1, 4, 8, 12 and 24 hours after intravenous injection. Fluorescence microscopy was utilized to identify tissues

Ventricular neoplasms can be grouped together as a single disease entity because of the behavior of some of the tumors and similarities between the access of therapy and procedure of operation. In our series, the incidence of various ventricular neoplasms (shown in decreasing order) were metastasis, astrocytoma, ependymoma, meningioma, choroid plexus papillomas and oligodendroglioma. The intraventricular tumors included some metastasis involved by hematogenous spread, meningioms, and choroid plexus papilloma while paraventricular tumors included some of the systemic myeloproliferative disorder

Primary neoplasms of the choroid plexus in children are surgically treatable, and the encouraging results of surgical removal, even for carcinoma, justify an aggressive surgical approach. Forty cases operated on over a span of 45 years have been reviewed in detail, including a rereading of all microscopic slides. The prognosis for children with papilloma has been excellent. The 5-year survival rate for children with carcinoma of the choroid plexus was 50%, and all deaths occurred within 7 months of operation. The patients whose carcinomas were totally removed had a better prognosis than did th

BACKGROUND: Choroid plexus papillomas are rare benign neoplasms that arise from the ventricular choroid plexus and are considered to be of ependymal origin. They are slow-growing lesions, are commonly associated with hydrocephalus, and are prone to hemorrhage spontaneously. Most of them are located in the posterior fossa in adults, the fourth ventricle being the most common location.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a case of a 61-year-old male patient with a fourth ventricular exophytic choroid plexus papilloma extending caudally into the foramen magnum causing obstructive hydrocephalus. In Febru

Choroid plexus tumors are uncommon neoplasms of the central nervous system. A series of 11 cases from the Vancouver General and British Columbia Children's Hospitals, treated during the last 12 years, are reviewed. Some of the management problems commonly encountered with these tumors are discussed. Many of these tumors are associated with severe hydrocephalus at the time of diagnosis, and the perioperative management of this hydrocephalus remains a matter of some debate. The timing of and the necessity for shunting are major considerations. Large subdural fluid collections are often discovere

The deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) content of 10 choroid plexus tumors, including 4 malignant tumors and 3 normal choroid plexus controls, was analyzed by flow cytometry to determine whether a ploidy or proliferation rate is a better predictor of tumor behavior than histological features. Nine of 10 neoplasms had both diploid and aneuploid modal populations. One neoplasm and all three control cases had only a diploid peak. Among the tumors, the DNA indices of the aneuploid peaks ranged from 1.1 to 2.2. The percentage of aneuploid cells ranged from 7 to 99, and no distinction was made between beni

The case histories of two children of consanguineous parents with papillomas of the choroid plexus are presented. Although exogenic factors in the genesis of these neoplasms can not be excluded, autosomal recessive inheritance is proposed.
