Morphological and molecular characterization of dietary-induced pseudo-albinism during post-embryonic development of Solea senegalensis (Kaup, 1858).

The appearance of the pseudo-albino phenotype was investigated in developing Senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis, Kaup 1858) larvae at morph … However, results from different relative proportions, allocation patterns, shapes and sizes of skin chromatophores revealed changes in the pigmentation pattern between ARA and control groups from 33 days post hatching onwards. The new populations of chromatophores that should appear at post-metamorphosis were not formed in the ARA group. Further, spatial pattern …

Adenylate Cyclase 5 (Adcy5) Deficiency Impairs Pigment Granule Dispersion in Melanophores and Erythrophores in Nile Tilapia.

Adenylate cyclase 5 (Adcy5) generates cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) downstream of G protein-coupled receptor signaling, yet its role in vertebrate pigmentation remains incompletely understood. Here, we generated a CRISPR/Cas9-mediated adcy5 knockout line in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) to investigate its function in chromatophore biology. Loss of adcy5 resulted in a pronounced disruption of body coloration, characterized by the absence of vertical black bars and a global reduction in pigmentation. Despite this, chromatophore number was largely unaffected, indicating that Adcy5

Green and orange CdTe quantum dots as effective pH-sensitive fluorescent probes for dual simultaneous and independent detection of viruses.

One of the most highlighted and fastest moving interfaces of nanotechnology is the application of quantum dots (QDs) in biology. The unparal … antibody-antigen reactions. A new kind of biosensor (consisting of the mixture of green-QDs-labeled chromatophores and orange-QDs-labeled chromatophores) fluorescent measurement system was established for rapid, simultaneous, and independent detection of two different kinds of viruses (i.e., H9 avian influenza virus and MHV68 virus). It is crucial to find that t …

Integrated Transcriptomic Analysis of Skin Pigmentation Development in Amphiprion frenatus.

Skin pigmentation in teleosts is a complex process governed by molecular and cellular mechanisms during development. In this study, we investigated the pigmentation process in the tomato clownfish (Amphiprion frenatus) using an integrated approach combining histological analysis and transcriptomics (RNA-Seq and Ribo-Seq). Histological examination revealed the stepwise differentiation of chromatophores during post-embryonic development. Transcriptomic profiling at 14 days post-hatching (dph) identified extensive changes in transcript abundance, with 2063 of 2667 differentially expressed unigene…

Cyclic nature of the REM sleep-like state in the cuttlefish Sepia officinalis.

Sleep is a state of immobility characterized by three key criteria: an increased threshold of arousal, rapid reversal to an alert state and evidence of homeostatic 'rebound sleep' in which there is an increase in the time spent in this quiescent state following sleep deprivation. Common European cuttlefish, Sepia officinalis, show states of quiescence during which they meet the last two of these three criteria, yet also show spontaneous bursts of arm and eye movements that accompany rapid changes in chromatophore patterns in the skin. Here, we report that this rapid eye movement sleep-like (RE

Involvement of melanin-concentrating hormone 2 in background color adaptation of barfin flounder Verasper moseri.

In teleosts, melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) plays a key role in skin color changes. MCH is released into general circulation from the neurohypophysis, which causes pigment aggregation in the skin chromatophores. Recently, a novel MCH (MCH2) precursor gene, which is orthologous to the mammalian MCH precursor gene, has been identified in some teleosts using genomic data mining. The physiological function of MCH2 remains unclear. In the present study, we cloned the cDNA for MCH2 from barfin flounder, Verasper moseri. The putative prepro-MCH2 contains 25 amino acids of MCH2 peptide region. Li…

The dynamics of pattern matching in camouflaging cuttlefish.

Many cephalopods escape detection using camouflage1. This behaviour relies on a visual assessment of the surroundings, on an interpretation of visual-texture statistics2-4 and on matching these statistics using millions of skin chromatophores that are controlled by motoneurons located in the brain5-7. Analysis of cuttlefish images proposed that camouflage patterns are low dimensional and categorizable into three pattern classes, built from a small repertoire of components8-11. Behavioural experiments also indicated that, although camouflage requires vision, its execution does not require feedb…

Uveal iridophoroma in a betta fish (Betta splendens).

Chromatophoromas are neoplasms arising from pigment cells in vertebrates. Iridophoromas are a type of chromatophoroma that are reported in several teleost species. There are multiple case reports of this diagnosis in betta fish (Betta splendens), but all previously reported cases originated from the skin. This is the first report of an intra-ocular iridophoroma. An adult betta fish had buphthalmia of the right eye and enucleation was performed. The fish survived surgery but was found dead 2 days later. The eye and entire body were examined histologically, and the right eye was also examined ul

First report of an iridophoroma in a Tegu (Salvator merianae).

BACKGROUND: This case report describes the clinical and histological findings of a rare periocular iridophoroma in a tegu. CASE PRESENTATION: Iridophoroma is a rare type of chromatophoroma, a tumor that arises from iridophores, specialized pigment cells responsible for reflecting light. This case report describes a 6-year-old male Argentine black and white tegu (Salvator merianae) presented with a large, irregular, proliferative mass in the periocular region. The mass originated from the upper left eyelid, partially covering the ocular surface, and measured 2.5 cm in diameter. The patient was

Carotenoid triplet yields in normal and deuterated Rhodospirillum rubrum.

Quantum yields of carotenoid triplet formation in Rhodospirillum rubrum wild type and fully deuterated cells and chromatophores were determined in weak laser flashes for excitation wavelength lambda i = 530 nm (mainly absorbed by the carotenoid spirilloxanthin) and for lambda i = 608 nm (mainly absorbed by bacteriochlorophyll) in the presence and absence of magnetic fields. All experiments were performed at room temperature and in the absence of oxygen. The quantum yield of reaction center bacteriochlorophyll oxidation in wild type preparations, in which all reaction centers are in state PIX, …

Use of a diode laser in an excisional biopsy of two spoonlike neoformations on the tongue tip.

The 810 nm diode laser, due to its high affinity with haemoglobin (elective chromatophore) revealed, by itself, as elective instrument for surgical excision of the tongue, an organ highly vascularized and sensitive to the laser cutting action. The advantages for its use, with respect to the traditional cold blade surgery, are its haemostatic effect (which avoids to close wounds by stitches) and, not less important, the decontaminant effect of the laser ray, due to either the thermal raising created on cutting line and/or the specific selective action exerted on the bacterial membrane by its wa

[Kinetic model of the operation of a 2-electron switch in the photosynthetic reaction center of bacteria].

A mathematical model, describing the binary oscillation of the concentration of semiquinone form of the secondary acceptor (ubiquinone) in photosynthetic reaction center of purple bacteria is proposed. This model takes into account both the changes of the ubiquinone state when the chromatophores are subjected to short flashes of light, and the successive dark relaxation of the semiquinone form. The model allows to calculate such characteristics as the dependence of the flash number, the stationary level of semiquinone form which is being established, when the flash number increases, the veloci…

Identification of a transparent mutant tiger barb Puntius tetrazona and its use for in vivo observation of a Pleistophora sp. (Microsporidia) infection.

A transparent mutant tiger barb Puntius tetrazona was identified and characterized by its transparent body, which allows clear visualization of internal organs. Hybridization of this mutant with the albino variant produces a transparent and albinoid double phenotype, and the transparency of this mutant is controlled by a recessive allele. Light microscopic and ultrastructural examinations show that in contrast to normal individuals, transparent mutants lack iridophores, and light penetrates unimpeded through the body. Pleistophora sp. infection was observed in vivo, allowing live observation o
