Nasal septum lesions caused by chromium exposure among chromium electroplating workers.

A chromium electroplating worker, suffering from epistaxis during work, was found to have nasal septum perforation. To determine the etiology and prevalence of nasal septum lesions, we conducted a survey of seven chromium electroplating factories and examined 79 workers. Forty workers from three aluminum electroplating factories were also enrolled as the reference group. Subjects were thoroughly examined by an otolaryngologist and each of them provided a blood and urine sample. A questionnaire interview regarding symptoms of the upper respiratory tract, past medical history, life style, and wo

Tissue accumulation and urinary excretion of chromium in rats fed diets containing graded levels of chromium chloride or chromium picolinate.

To attempt a risk assessment of the excess intake of trivalent chromium (Cr), tissue Cr accumulation and urinary Cr excretion were examined in weanling rats fed experimental diets containing graded levels of Cr chloride (CrCl3) or Cr picolinate (CrPic). Thirty-six male weanling 4-weeks-old Wistar rats were divided into six groups and fed a casein-based semi-purified diet (Cr content: <0.02 microg/g) supplemented with 1, 10, or 100 microg Cr/g as CrCl3 or CrPic for 28 days. Among the experimental groups, no significant difference was observed in body weight; however, supplementation of 100 micr

An efficient utilization of chromium-containing vanadium tailings: Extraction of chromium by soda roasting-water leaching and preparation of chromium oxide.

Chromium-containing vanadium tailings (CCVT), an industrial waste, were utilized to extract chromium efficiently by soda roasting-water leaching process and for the preparation of highly pure chromium oxide. The effect of extraction of chromium under different roasting and leaching conditions were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The maximum chromium extraction rate of 91.51% was obtained when soda (Na2CO3) and CCVT were mixed in a molar ratio (n (Na2CO3)/n (Cr2O3)) of 8, roasted at 900 °C and maintained for 120 min. Then, the roasted product was l

Uptake of chromium(III) and chromium(VI) compounds in the yeast cell structure.

The study presented in this article investigated the influence of different Cr(III) and Cr(VI) compounds in the cultivation medium on the uptake and localization of chromium in the cell structure of the yeast Candida intermedia. The morphology of the yeast cell surface was observed by the scanning electron microscopy. Results demonstrated that the growth inhibitory concentration of Cr(III) in the cultivation medium induced changes in the yeast cell shape and affected the budding pattern, while inhibitory concentration of Cr(VI) did not cause any visible effects on morphological properties of t

A physiologically based model for the ingestion of chromium(III) and chromium(VI) by humans.

A physiologically based model of human chromium kinetics has been developed, based on an existing physiologically based model of human body and bone growth (O'Flaherty, 1993, Toxicol. Appl. Pharmacol. 118, 16-29; 1995a, Toxicol. Appl. Pharmacol. 131, 297-308; 2000, Toxicol. Sci. 55, 171-18) and an existing physiologically based model of chromium kinetics in rats (O'Flaherty, 1996, Toxicol. Appl. Pharmacol. 138, 54-64). Key features of the adapted model, specific to chromium, include differential absorption of Cr(VI) and Cr(III), rapid reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) in all body fluids and tissu

Therapeutic review: is ascorbic acid of value in chromium poisoning and chromium dermatitis?

INTRODUCTION: Repeated topical exposure to chromium(VI) may cause an allergic contact dermatitis or the formation of chrome ulcers. Systemic toxicity may occur following the ingestion of a chromium(VI) salt, from chromium(VI)-induced skin burns, or from inhalation of chromium(VI) occurring occupationally. Soluble chromium(VI) salts are usually absorbed more easily and cross cell membranes more readily than trivalent chromium salts, and, therefore chromium(VI) is more toxic than chromium(III). In experimental studies, endogenous ascorbic acid in rat lung, liver, and kidney and human plasma, eff

Speciation of hexavalent chromium in welding fumes interference by air oxidation of chromium.

The determination of various chromium species in welding fume normally involves digestion in a hot alkaline solution. This work confirms that Cr(III) can be oxidized to Cr(VI) during this digestion. However, only dissolved forms of Cr(III), such as the hydroxochromate(III) ion, [Cr(OH)4], are susceptible to oxidation under these conditions. The air oxidation of Cr(III) can be prevented by hydrolytic destabilization of the hydroxochromate(III) complex by the presence of magnesium hydroxide precipitate. The procedure has been used successfully in the determination of insoluble chromium(VI) in we

Synthesis of Chromium(IV) Nitrides Through High-Spin Tetrahedral Chromium(I) Intermediates.

Reduction of (depe)2CrCl2 (depe = 1,2-bis(diethylphosphino)ethane) and (dep-benz)2CrCl2 (dep-benz = 1,2-bis(diethylphosphino)benzene) under 1 atm of N2 furnished the dinitrogen complexes (depe)2Cr(N2)2 and (dep-benz)2Cr(N2)2, respectively. One-electron oxidation of these products with FcBArF4 (Fc = ferrocenium, BArF4 = B(3,5-(CF3)2C6H3)4) yielded the unusual, high-spin tetrahedral complexes [(depe)2Cr][BArF4] and [(dep-benz)2Cr][BArF4] with concomitant loss of dinitrogen. Reaction of the chromium(I) derivatives with Ph3CN3 furnished rare examples of chromium(IV) nitrides as confirmed spectrosc

Chromium(III), chromium(VI) and cobalt release from leathers produced in Nicaragua.

BACKGROUND: Leather exposure has been associated with chromium (Cr) and cobalt (Co) contact dermatitis. Cr(VI) in leather is now restricted to <3 mg/kg in the EU. Cr(III) is not restricted. OBJECTIVES: To analyse 29 differently coloured Cr-tanned leather samples from two Nicaraguan tanneries, and to compare their release of Cr, Cr(VI) and Co with that of leathers produced in Europe. METHODS: Cr, Cr(VI) and Co were extracted in phosphate buffer for 3 hours at 25°C according to EN ISO 17075. Atomic absorption spectroscopy and spectrophotometry were used for detection of the metals in phosphate

Cleavage of human orosomucoid by a chromium(V) species: relevance in biotoxicity of chromium.

A chromium(V) complex, CrO(salen)+, was generated in situ and its interaction with human orosomucoid (alpha1-acid glycoprotein) has been evaluated. The chromium(V) species has been found to oxidize the protein rapidly. A second order rate constant of 5 +/- 0.4 x 10(4) M(-1) s(-1) has been obtained for the redox process. Gel electrophoresis pattern of AGP in the presence of metal ion clearly reveals the decrease in the intensity of the AGP band with the subsequent formation of protein fragments of lower molecular weight. At higher metal ion concentration a continuous smear is observed which ind

Subtoxic intracellular trivalent chromium is not mutagenic: implications for safety of chromium supplementation.

For reasons that are outlined, toxicologists have long suspected that intranuclear trivalent chromium mediates much if not all of the well-documented genotoxicity of hexavalent chromium. However, more recent evidence suggests that this genotoxicity is in fact attributable to free radical damage catalyzed by hexavalent chromium under reducing aerobic conditions. Subtoxic intranuclear concentrations of trivalent chromium, while they can be clastogenic in vitro, do not appear to induce point mutations and thus are unlikely to mediate the carcinogenicity of hexavalent compounds. Furthermore, there

Efficacy of chromium picolinate and chromium chloride as potential carcass modifiers in swine.

We conducted two experiments to evaluate the effects of chromium picolinate and chromium chloride (CrCl3) on growth performance, carcass composition, percentages and accretion rates of carcass tissues and chemical components, and blood metabolites in pigs. In Exp. 1, 35 individually penned pigs were fed a fortified, corn-soybean meal basal diet (.95% lysine) supplemented with 0, 200, or 400 micrograms/kg of Cr from chromium picolinate or 5,000 or 25,000 micrograms/ kg of Cr from CrCl3. Each diet was fed to seven pigs for 35 d (19.6 to 43.2 kg BW). Addition of 200 micrograms/kg of Cr from chrom

A prediction of chromium(III) accumulation in humans from chromium dietary supplements.

It has been proposed that 90% of American's diets are deficient in the trace essential mineral chromium. Several chromium(III) dietary supplements are currently available to alleviate this deficiency. We show here that the same pharmacokinetic models that have been used to quantitate absorption of chromium(III) in humans predict that ingested chromium(III) will accumulate and be retained in human tissues for extended periods. Calculations were carried out with the popular supplement chromium picolinate as an example, but may be applied to any chromium(III) complex. Results from these calculati

Production of 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine in isolated DNA by chromium(VI) and chromium(V).

Chromium(VI) and Cr(V) compounds increased the concentration of 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (oh8dG) in isolated DNA, whereas no such increase was seen with Cr(III). Furthermore, incubating DNA with H2O2 and Cr(VI) or Cr(V) potentiated the formation of oh8dG above levels observed with either chromium compound alone. In the presence of catalase, the increase in DNA oxidation observed with Cr(VI) was inhibited, the base oxidation observed being equivalent to background levels, and this indicated involvement of H2O2 in the mechanism. Glutathione did not enhance chromium-induced formation of this oxidi

Alterations of chromium metabolism and effect of chromium supplementation in Turner's syndrome patients.

This study was conducted to investigate chromium metabolism and the effect of chromium supplementation in patients with Turner's syndrome, a condition noted for its high incidence of diabetes. Oral glucose tolerance tests were performed in 14 patients 8 to 19 yr of age. Eight of the 14 subjects were given 30 g of brewer's yeast containing 50 micrograms of chromium every day for 8 wk and glucose tolerance tests repeated. Urine samples were collected before and after each glucose load. Serum lipids were also investigated. Before supplementation, urinary chromium/creatinine ratio was high, and th

Is Urinary Chromium Specific to Hexavalent Chromium Exposure in the Presence of Co-exposure to Other Chromium Compounds? A Biomonitoring Study in the Electroplating Industry.

OBJECTIVES: Electroplating processes are widely used in metal industries to improve the resistance properties of manufactured metal parts. Workers in this industry are potentially exposed both to hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) and to other chromium compounds [mostly trivalent chromium (Cr(III))], due to the use of chromic acid baths. The goal of this study was to validate urinary chromium as a Cr(VI) exposure biomarker in the presence of exposure to other chromium compounds. METHODS: A biomonitoring study consisted in monitoring airborne chromium exposure and urinary chromium for one working we

Reactions of a chromium(III)-superoxo complex and nitric oxide that lead to the formation of chromium(IV)-oxo and chromium(III)-nitrito complexes.

The reaction of an end-on Cr(III)-superoxo complex bearing a 14-membered tetraazamacrocyclic TMC ligand, [Cr(III)(14-TMC)(O2)(Cl)](+), with nitric oxide (NO) resulted in the generation of a stable Cr(IV)-oxo species, [Cr(IV)(14-TMC)(O)(Cl)](+), via the formation of a Cr(III)-peroxynitrite intermediate and homolytic O-O bond cleavage of the peroxynitrite ligand. Evidence for the latter comes from electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, computational chemistry and the observation of phenol nitration chemistry. The Cr(IV)-oxo complex does not react with nitrogen dioxide (NO2), but reacts wi

Chromium carbides and cyclopropenylidenes.

Carbon tetrabromide can be reduced with CrBr2 in THF to form a dinuclear carbido complex, [CrBr2(thf)2)][CrBr2(thf)3](μ-C), along with formation of [CrBr3(thf)3]. An X-ray diffraction (XRD) study of the pyridine adduct displayed a dinuclear structure bridged by a carbido ligand between 5- and 6-coordinate chromium centers. The carbido complex reacted with two equivalents of aldehydes to form α,β-unsaturated ketones. Treatment of the carbido complex with alkenes resulted in a formal double-cyclopropanation of alkenes by the carbido moiety to afford spiropentanes. Isotope labeling studies using

The Identity of "Chromium Malate".

Recently, several studies on the effects of a compound named "chromium malate," with the proposed formula "Cr2malate3·xH2O" where x = 3.5 or 5, on the health of healthy and diabetic rats have appeared. However, the compound is poorly characterized, and knowing the identity of this material could be important in the interpretation of the previous and of future studies on the effects of this compound in animals. Consequently, the synthesis, characterization, and identity of this material were explored. A combination of spectroscopic, magnetic, and elemental analyses and mass spectral studies rev
