Alleviation of heavy metal and silver nanoparticle toxicity and enhancement of their removal by hydrogen sulfide in Phanerochaete chrysosporium.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), an important cellular signaling molecule, plays vital roles in mediating responses to biotic/abiotic stresses. Influences of H2S on metal removal, cell viability, and antioxidant response of Phanerochaete chrysosporium upon exposure to heavy metals and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in the present study were investigated. An enhancement in Pb(ΙΙ) removal with an increase in concentration of the H2S donor sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) was observed, and the maximum removal efficiencies increased by 31% and 17% under 100 and 200 mg/L Pb(ΙΙ) exposure, respectively, in the presen

Porous Carbon Sponge from White-Rot Fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium for the Removal of Oils and Organic Solvents.

Oil leakage incidentally occurs and leads to environmental disasters. Because of their porous and hydrophobic characteristics, graphene sponges are often studied as an oil adsorbent to repair oil spills at sea. Graphene materials are very expensive, and their biological toxicity has been given serious concerns; however, the easier preparation and eco-friendly, biomass-derived porous carbon materials can be used as an alternative to graphene materials. In this study, we prepared a porous carbon sponge (PCS) for oil and organic solvent removal by carbonizing white-rot fungus Phanerochaete chryso

Mechanisms of gradient enzymatic conversion of lignin by a dual-fungal system consisting of Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Pleurotus eryngii.

Chinese Distillers' grains (CDGs), a typical agro-industrial byproduct, contain a highly recalcitrant lignin that limits the utilization. In this study, a dual-fungal solid-state fermentation system consisting of Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Pleurotus eryngii was constructed for lignin conversion in CDGs. The lignin degradation ratio reached 58.66%, indicating that the system can effectively convert lignin. Laccase (Lac) and manganese peroxidase (MnP) activities peaked at 10 d, reaching 38.54 and 50.36 U/g, respectively, whereas lignin peroxidase (LiP) reached its maximum activity (51.67 U/

Severe Disseminated Necrotizing and Granulomatous Lymphadenitis and Encephalitis in a Dog Due to Sporotrichum pruinosum (Teleomorph: Phanerochaete chrysosporium).

A 9-year-old female mixed breed dog presented for an acute onset of anorexia, vomiting, and cough. Initial examination and diagnostics revealed a large multilobular cranial mediastinal mass with unidentified fungal organisms on cytology. The disease progressed in spite of therapy until the dog was euthanized 8 months later. Gross necropsy findings were a large multilobular intrathoracic mass, mild pleuritis, and generalized lymphadenopathy. Histologic evaluation showed granulomatous inflammation and necrosis with numerous 20- to 70-micron, periodic acid-Schiff- and Gomori methenamine silver-po

Deep fungal dermatitis in three inland bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps) caused by the Chrysosporium anamorph of Nannizziopsis vriesii.

The Chrysosporium anamorph of Nannizziopsis vriesii (CANV), a keratinophilic fungus that naturally and experimentally causes severe and often fatal dermatitis in multiple reptile species, was isolated in pure culture from skin samples of three inland bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps) with deep granulomatous dermatomycosis. The first animal presented with a focal maxillary swelling involving the skin and gingiva. This lizard died while undergoing itraconazole and topical miconazole therapy. The second presented with focally extensive discoloration and thickening of the skin of the ventrum and

Synergistic lignin degradation between Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Fenton chemistry is mediated through iron cycling and ligninolytic enzyme induction.

Removal of recalcitrant lignin from wastewater remains a critical bottleneck in multiple aspects relating to microbial carbon cycling ranging from incomplete treatment of biosolids during wastewater treatment to limited conversion of biomass feedstock to biofuels. Based on previous studies showing that the white rot fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Fenton chemistry synergistically degrade lignin, we sought to determine optimum levels of Fenton addition and the mechanisms underlying this synergy. We tested the extent of degradation of lignin under different ratios of Fenton reagents and f

Exogenous microbial antagonism affects the bioaugmentation of humus formation under different inoculation using Trichoderma reesei and Phanerochaete chrysosporium.

This study was aimed at exploring the effect of antagonism of Trichoderma reesei (T.r) and Phanerochaete chrysosporium (P.c) on humification during fermentation of rice (RS) and canola straw (CS). Results showed that exogeneous fungi accelerated straw degradation and enzyme activities of CMCase, xylanase and LiP. P.c inhibited the activity of LiP when co-existing with T.r beginning, it promoted the degradation of lignin and further increased the production of humus-like substances (HLS) and humic-like acid (HLA) in later fermentation when nutrients were insufficient. The HLS of RTP was 54.9 g/

Voriconazole, a safe alternative for treating infections caused by the Chrysosporium anamorph of Nannizziopsis vriesii in bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps).

Dermal and systemic infections caused by the Chrysosporium anamorph of Nannizziopsis vriesii (CANV) are highly prevalent in reptiles and may result in severe disease and high mortality. Due to the high incidence of therapeutic failures, optimizing treatment is required. We first determined in this study the minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of itraconazole, voriconazole, amphotericin B and terbinafine against 32 CANV isolates. For voriconazole, amphotericin B and terbinafine a monomodal MIC distribution was seen, whereas a bimodal MIC distribution was present for itraconazole, indicating

Studies on the treatment of anaerobically digested sludge by white-rot fungi: evaluation of the effect of Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Trametes versicolor.

BACKGROUND: The composition of anaerobically digested sludge is inherently complex, enriched with structurally complex organic compounds and nitrogenous constituents, which are refractory to biodegradation. These characteristics limit the subsequent rational utilization of resources from anaerobically digested sludge. White-rot fungi (WRF) have garnered significant research interest due to their exceptional capacity to degrade complex and recalcitrant organic pollutants. However, the exploration of WRF in the context of sludge treatment remains an under-investigated area within the scientific

Interactions between fungal growth, substrate utilization and enzyme production during shallow stationary cultivation of Phanerochaete chrysosporium on cotton stalks.

Microbial pretreatment of lignocellulosic feedstocks is an environment friendly alternative to physio-chemical pretreatment methods. A better understanding of the interactive fungal mechanisms in biological systems is essential for enhancing performance and facilitating scale-up and commercialization of this pretreatment technique. In this study, mathematical models were developed for describing cellulose and hemicellulose consumption, lignin degradation, cellulase and ligninolytic enzyme production and oxygen uptake associated with the growth of Phanerochaete chrysosporium during a 14-day sha

The 1,4-beta-D-glucan cellobiohydrolases from Phanerochaete chrysosporium. I. A system of synergistically acting enzymes homologous to Trichoderma reesei.

A physico-chemical and structural characterization of three 1,4-beta-D-glucan cellobiohydrolases (EC. 3.2.1.91), isolated from a culture filtrate of the white-rot fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium, reveals that the cellulolytic enzyme secretion pattern and thus the general degradation strategy for P. chrysosporium is similar to that of Trichoderma reesei. Partial sequence data show that two of the isolated enzymes, i.e., CBHI, pI 3.82 and CBH62, pI 4.85, are homologous with CBHI and EGI from T. reesei; while, the third, i.e., CBH50, pI 4.87, is homologous to T. reesei CBHII. Understanding the role of lignin peroxidase (LiP) from Phanerochaete chrysosporium for refinery wastewater remediation: Insights from molecular docking and simulation.

This study investigates the molecular interaction of lignin peroxidase (LiP) enzyme produced by Phanerochaete chrysosporium fungi in treating petroleum refinery wastewater (RWW) through a computational approach. RWW contains various aromatic hydrocarbons and recalcitrant organic compounds, which harm the ecosystem. While previous work focused on the activity of LiP and manganese peroxidase (MnP) protein, and established MnP interaction with pollutants, the molecular interaction of LiP remained unexplored. This study extends the work by performing molecular docking and simulation of LiP with th

Disseminated infection due to Chrysosporium zonatum in a patient with chronic granulomatous disease and review of non-Aspergillus fungal infections in patients with this disease.

We report the first case of Chrysosporium zonatum infection in a 15-year-old male with chronic granulomatous disease who developed a lobar pneumonia and tibia osteomyelitis while on prophylaxis with gamma interferon. The fungus was isolated from sputum and affected bone, and hyphae were observed in the bone by histopathology. Therapy with amphotericin B eradicated the osteomyelitis and pneumonia, but pneumonia recurred in association with pericarditis and pleuritis during therapy with itraconazole. These manifestations subsided, and no recurrences occurred with liposomal amphotericin B therapy
