The function of anal fin egg-spots in the cichlid fish Astatotilapia burtoni.

Color and pigmentation patterns of animals are often targets of sexual selection because of their role in communication. Although conspicuous male traits are typically implicated with intersexual selection, there are examples where sex-specific displays play a role in an intrasexual context, e.g. when they serve as signals for aggression level and/or status. Here, we focus on the function of a conspicuous male ornament in the most species-rich tribe of cichlid fishes, the haplochromines. A characteristic feature of these ca. 1500 species are so-called egg-spots in form of ovoid markings on the

Characterization of the dopaminergic system in the brain of an African cichlid fish, Astatotilapia burtoni.

Catecholamines, such as dopamine, are evolutionarily ancient neurotransmitters that play an essential role in mediating behavior. In vertebrates, dopamine is central to the nigrostriatal motor and mesolimbic reward systems. Despite its importance, the distribution of the dopaminergic system has not been well studied in the teleost brain. The African cichlid fish Astatotilapia burtoni has become an important model system in social neuroscience and lends itself to uncovering how social decisions are implemented in the brain. To understand better where dopamine acts to regulate social behavior in

Stimulation in vitro of estradiol secretion by the ovary of a cichlid fish, Sarotherodon aureus.

The objective of the present study was to investigate the nature of the gonadotrophic stimulation of estradiol (E2) secretion by the ovary of a teleost fish in vitro. Spontaneous output of E2 decreased to a low baseline after 3 hr of superfusion and increased to a maximal level 2-3 hr after the introduction of homologous pituitary extract (T-PE) or human chorionic gonadotrophin into the superfusion system. Addition of the phosphodiesterase inhibitor, isobutyl methylxanthine (IBMX, 0.5 mM), into a closed-system incubation resulted in an augmented response of the ovary to either dibutyryl cyclic

Absence of Figla-like Gene Is Concordant with Femaleness in Cichlids Harboring the LG1 Sex-Determination System.

Oreochromis niloticus has been used as a reference genome for studies of tilapia sex determination (SD) revealing segregating genetic loci on linkage groups (LGs) 1, 3, and 23. The master key regulator genes (MKR) underlying the SD regions on LGs 3 and 23 have been already found. To identify the MKR in fish that segregate for the LG1 XX/XY SD-system, we applied short variant discovery within the sequence reads of the genomic libraries of the Amherst hybrid stock, Coptodon zillii and Sarotherodon galilaeus, which were aligned to a 3-Mbp-region of the O. aureus genome. We obtained 66,372 variant

Executive functions and brain morphology of male and female dominant and subordinate cichlid fish.

BACKGROUND: Living in a social dominance hierarchy presents different benefits and challenges for dominant and subordinate males and females, which might in turn affect their cognitive needs. Despite the extensive research on social dominance in group-living species, there is still a knowledge gap regarding how social status impacts brain morphology and cognitive abilities. METHODS: Here, we tested male and female dominants and subordinates of Neolamprologus pulcher, a social cichlid fish species with size-based hierarchy. We ran three executive cognitive function tests for cognitive flexibil

Turnover of sex chromosomes in the Lake Tanganyika cichlid tribe Tropheini (Teleostei: Cichlidae).

Sex chromosome replacement is frequent in many vertebrate clades, including fish, frogs, and lizards. In order to understand the mechanisms responsible for sex chromosome turnover and the early stages of sex chromosome divergence, it is necessary to study lineages with recently evolved sex chromosomes. Here we examine sex chromosome evolution in a group of African cichlid fishes (tribe Tropheini) which began to diverge from one another less than 4 MYA. We have evidence for a previously unknown sex chromosome system, and preliminary indications of several additional systems not previously repor

Molecular mechanisms underlying nuchal hump formation in dolphin cichlid, Cyrtocara moorii.

East African cichlid fishes represent a model to tackle adaptive changes and their connection to rapid speciation and ecological distinction. In comparison to bony craniofacial tissues, adaptive morphogenesis of soft tissues has been rarely addressed, particularly at the molecular level. The nuchal hump in cichlids fishes is one such soft-tissue and exaggerated trait that is hypothesized to play an innovative role in the adaptive radiation of cichlids fishes. It has also evolved in parallel across lakes in East Africa and Central America. Using gene expression profiling, we identified and vali

Influence of leucine-enkephalin on pituitary-ovary axis of the cichlid fish Oreochromis mossambicus.

The present investigation was conducted to elucidate the influence of an opioid peptide, leucine-enkephalin (L-ENK), on the reproductive axis of the tilapia Oreochromis mossambicus. In the first experiment, administration (i.p.) of 25, 100, and 300 μg L-ENK to the stripped female tilapia, for a period of 22 days, resulted in a significantly higher number of stage I follicles compared to those of initial controls and experimental controls, whereas the mean number of stage II and III follicles and serum levels of E2 did not significantly differ among different experimental groups. A significant

Electrical synapses connect a network of gonadotropin releasing hormone neurons in a cichlid fish.

Initiating and regulating vertebrate reproduction requires pulsatile release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH1) from the hypothalamus. Coordinated GnRH1 release, not simply elevated absolute levels, effects the release of pituitary gonadotropins that drive steroid production in the gonads. However, the mechanisms underlying synchronization of GnRH1 neurons are unknown. Control of synchronicity by gap junctions between GnRH1 neurons has been proposed but not previously found. We recorded simultaneously from pairs of transgenically labeled GnRH1 neurons in adult male Astatotilapia burtoni

Identification and characterization of cichlid TAAR genes and comparison with other teleost TAAR repertoires.

BACKGROUND: TAARs (trace amine-associated receptors) are among the principal receptors expressed by the olfactory epithelium. We used the recent BROAD Institute release of the genome sequences of five representative fishes of the cichlid family to establish the complete TAAR repertoires of these species and to compare them with five other fish TAAR repertoires. RESULTS: The genome sequences of O. niloticus, P. nyererei, H. burtoni, N. brichardi and M. zebra were analyzed by exhaustive TBLASTN searches with a set of published TAAR gene sequences used as positive bait. Mechanisms of rapid sympatric speciation by sex reversal and sexual selection in cichlid fish.

Mechanisms of speciation in cichlid fish were investigated by analyzing population genetic models of sexual selection on sex-determining genes associated with color polymorphisms. The models are based on a combination of laboratory experiments and field observations on the ecology, male and female mating behavior, and inheritance of sex-determination and color polymorphisms. The models explain why sex-reversal genes that change males into females tend to be X-linked and associated with novel colors, using the hypothesis of restricted recombination on the sex chromosomes, as suggested by previo

Structure and development of first-generation teeth in the cichlid Hemichromis bimaculatus (Teleostei, Cichlidae).

In order to build a reference system to assess results of ongoing in vitro experiments on the study of epithelial-mesenchymal interactions during odontogenesis in actinopterygians, we have chosen to study the first-generation teeth of the cichlid Hemichromis bimaculatus from initiation until attachment both at the light and transmission electron microscopical level. Although their development follows the general pattern of teleost tooth formation, first-generation teeth show peculiarities compared with later tooth generations, including their size, bare emergence from the epithelium, absence o

Pineal response in the cichlid fish Oreochromis mossambicus to extreme osmolality, pH, and temperature.

Unusually large pineal glands have been observed in Oreochromis alcalicus grahami of Lake Magadi, Kenya. To test the hypothesis that this phenomenon could result from the extremes of osmolality, pH, and temperature found in the lake, Oreochromis mossambicus males were exposed to either high osmolality (564 mOsm/L), high pH (10.08), or high temperature (40 C); control groups were exposed to 7 mOsm/L at a pH of 7.89 and a temperature of 26 C. After 21 days in the adverse environments, fish in all the experimental groups had significantly higher pineal weights and serum melatonin levels than the

Ultrastructure of the dental epithelium and odontoblasts during enameloid matrix deposition in cichlid teeth.

Teleost enameloid matrix has been proposed to be an ectodermal, mesodermal, or joint ectodermal-mesodermal product. To determine its origin we examined the ultrastructure of the inner dental epithelium (IDE), odontoblasts, enameloid, and dentin matrices of cichlid tooth buds at the stage of enameloid formation. © Alan R. Liss, Inc. Columnar IDE cells had apical and basal terminal webs and contained organelles associated with protein synthesis, including elongated secretory granules containing fibrillar material having cross-striations with 60-nm periodicity. The morphology of IDE secretory gra

Insights into the genetic basis of bilateral head asymmetry in a scale-eating cichlid fish.

Almost all animals are bilaterally symmetrical, and only rarely is this universality broken and maintained as a stable polymorphism. One such case is Perissodus microlepis, a scale-eating cichlid fish endemic to Lake Tanganyika. This species is polymorphic with left- or right-headed morphs, each specialized for scraping scales from the opposite side of their prey. This polymorphism is stably maintained around a 50:50 ratio and is likely driven by negative frequency-dependent selection, a classic form of balancing selection. Using a genome-wide dataset, including a de novo haplotype-resolved re

Cichlid fishes are promising underutilized models to investigate helminth-host-microbiome interactions.

The "Old Friends Hypothesis" suggests insufficient exposure to symbionts hinders immune development, contributing to increased immune-related diseases in the Global North. The microbiome is often the focus; helminths, potentially also offering health benefits, lack attention. Infection and effect of helminths are influenced and perhaps determined by micro-organisms. Mechanisms behind parasite-microbiome interactions are poorly understood, despite implications on host health. These interactions are typically studied for single helminth species in laboratory animal models, overlooking helminth d

Alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone immunoreactivity in the brain of the cichlid fish Oreochromis mossambicus.

This study reports the distribution of a pro-opiomelanocortin-derived neuropeptide α-MSH in the brain of the cichlid fish Oreochromis mossambicus. α-MSH-ir fibres were found in the granule cell layer of the olfactory bulb, the medial olfactory tract, the pallium and the subpallium, whereas in the preoptic area of the telencephalon, few large α-MSH-ir perikarya along with extensively labeled fibres were observed close to the ventricular border. Dense network of α-MSH-ir fibres were seen in the hypothalamic areas such as the nucleus preopticus pars magnocellularis, the nucleus preopticus pars pa

Changing sex for selfish gain: B chromosomes of Lake Malawi cichlid fish.

B chromosomes are extra, non-essential chromosomes present in addition to the normal complement of A chromosomes. Many species of cichlid fish in Lake Malawi carry a haploid, female-restricted B chromosome. Here we show that this B chromosome exhibits drive, with an average transmission rate of 70%. The offspring of B-transmitting females exhibit a strongly female-biased sex ratio. Genotyping of these offspring reveals the B chromosome carries a female sex determiner that is epistatically dominant to an XY system on linkage group 7. We suggest that this sex determiner evolved to enhance the me

Distribution of endomorphin-like-immunoreactive neurones in the brain of the cichlid fish Oreochromis mossambicus.

Endomorphins (EMs) are tetrapeptides involved in pain and neuroendocrine responses with a high affinity for μ-opioid receptors in mammals. In the present study, we investigated the distribution of EM-like-immunoreactive (EM-L-IR) neurones in the brain of the cichlid fish Oreochromis mossambicus. Application of antisera against EM-1 and 2 (EM-1-2) revealed the presence of EM-L-IR somata and fibres throughout the different subdivisions of the olfactory bulb, such as the olfactory nerve layer and the granule cell layer. Although the extensions of EM-L-IR fibres were seen along the medial olfactor

Aggressive behavior and reproductive physiology in females of the social cichlid fish Cichlasoma dimerus.

The South American cichlid fish Cichlasoma dimerus is a freshwater species that presents social hierarchies, a highly organized breeding activity, biparental care and a high frequency of spawning. Spawning is followed by a period of parental care (about 20 days in aquaria conditions) during which the cooperative pair takes care of the eggs, both by fanning them and by removing dead ones. The different spawning events in the reproductive period were classified as female reproductive stages which can be subdivided in four phases, according to their offspring degree of development: (1) female wit
