Characterizing substance use and mental health profiles of cigar, blunt, and non-blunt marijuana users from the National Survey of Drug Use and Health.

BACKGROUND: Smoking marijuana in a cigar (blunt use) is gaining popularity in the U.S. Research suggests that blunt users differ from exclusive cigar or marijuana users on a variety of demographic and substance use factors. Misreporting of blunts and cigars is also common, particularly among young people, and may lead to inaccurate prevalence estimates. To determine subtype differences, this study investigated the prevalence and demographic, mental health, and substance use correlates of four mutually-exclusive groups of blunt, cigar, and marijuana past 30-day users (cigar-only, blunt-only, no

Perceptions of African American Youth and Adults Regarding Tobacco Use-Related Factors in Their Community: A Mixed-Methods Approach in Richmond, Virginia.

INTRODUCTION: The US Food and Drug Administration is poised to restrict the availability of menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars, products disproportionately used by Black/African American (B/AA) individuals. We examined B/AA youth and adult perceptions regarding factors contributing to tobacco use, as well as prevention/cessation resources. METHODS: In 2 mixed-methods studies in Richmond, Virginia, we conducted cross-sectional surveys among youth (n = 201) and adult (n = 212) individuals who were primarily B/AA and reported past 30-day cigar smoking or nontobacco use, followed by focus gro

Past Year Quit Attempts and Use of Cessation Resources Among Cigarette-Only Smokers and Cigarette Smokers Who Use Other Tobacco Products.

INTRODUCTION: It is unclear how use of other tobacco products impacts cigarette-smoking cessation. We assessed differences in past year cigarette smoking quit attempts and use of counseling and medication among current cigarette-only users, cigarette and cigar users, and cigarette and smokeless tobacco (SLT) users. METHODS: Data came from 24 448 current cigarette-only, 1064 cigarette and cigar only, and 508 cigarette and SLT only users who responded to the 2010-2011 Tobacco Use Supplement to the Current Population Survey. Demographic, smoking, and cessation characteristics were computed by gr

Evaluating the Impact of Little Cigar Use on the Oral Bacterial Microbiota of Cigarette Smokers.

Tobacco products (e.g., cigarettes, little cigars) harbor diverse bacterial communities and long-term tobacco use alters the oral microbiome, potentially leading to oral disease. However, no studies have evaluated the immediate changes in the oral bacterial microbiota that could occur after using a new tobacco product. To address this knowledge gap, buccal swab and saliva samples were collected from forty cigarette smokers before and after a single use of a little cigar product on two separate visits. Total DNA was extracted from a total of 320 samples. The 16S rRNA gene was amplified from the

Estimating Prevalence of Premium or Traditional Cigar
Use and User Characteristics Based on Varying Definitions of Use.

BACKGROUND: Premium cigar use is infrequent compared with the use of other tobacco products, including other cigar types (eg, cigarillos), though current measurement methods for premium cigar use have limitations. Accordingly, prevalence estimates from existing surveillance studies likely underestimate the true prevalence of premium cigar use. AIMS AND METHODS: Using an online convenience sample of adults (ages 18-45 years) surveyed in February 2022, we examined premium or traditional cigar prevalence and characterized users based on four definitions of use: (1) past-year use, (2) past 30-day

Support among adults for a policy to lower nicotine levels in cigarettes and cigars - USA, 2023.

Nicotine is highly addictive and plays a dominant role in sustaining commercial tobacco use. This study assesses support for a policy to lower the nicotine levels in both cigarettes and cigars because reducing nicotine levels to less addictive or non-addictive levels is expected to reduce tobacco use and the resulting tobacco-related disease and death. Data came from SpringStyles 2023, a web panel survey of adults in the USA, aged 18 years or older (N=6694). Overall, 79.9% of adults supported this policy, including 69.3% of adults who currently smoke cigarettes, 70.2% of adults who currently s
